‘MY FATHER IS GREATER THAN I’

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 14:28 KJV “Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.”

The Lord explained to His disciples that, He would go away to the Father and come back to them, for the Father is greater than the Son. Does this suggest that the father is superior to the Son? What does it make of the doctrine of the Trinity, where the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are three distinct persons yet one God, in essence, co-equal in power, wisdom, and in everything?

Why did the Lord Jesus say the Father is greater than Him? Please let us know that Jesus is one with the Father in nature as God. John 10:30 which says “I and my Father are one”. The Lord had taken on the form of men and had come to do the will of the Father. In the light of His role in the salvation of men, the Father was greater. Consider the various roles of the trinity in the salvation of men according to 1 Peter 1:2 ” Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.” We see in this verse various roles played by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in the redemption of mankind. In this verse, the Father determines men’s salvation, the Holy Spirit sanctifies them, and the Lord Jesus lays His life in ‘obedience ‘ to save men. The Lord Jesus plays the sacrificial role. His role is lesser in ranking compared to that of the Father, yet it is all a cooperative role to save mankind.

In Philippians 2:6,7 the scriptures say; Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:” The Lord had to put aside His glory as God, and became man. As a man, He depended on the Holy Spirit to do all that He had to do. In His capacity as a man, the Father was greater. He made statements like; the day of His coming was in the Father’s domain. He even said, all He did and said came from the Father. At the end of His assignment, He said in John 17:5, that” And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.” Over here, the Lord prays to the Father requesting Him to be adorned with the same glory, He had with the Father, before creation. This establishes the fact that He assumed a lesser position, in order to save men with His life or blood, after which, He went back for His original glory.

THOUGHT: JESUS IS GOD, BUT TOOK UP A LESSER STATE AND ROLE TO SAVE MEN; WILL YOU ACCEPT HIS SACRIFICE?
