TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR PARENTS

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 22:3. And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.

During Saul’s pursuit of David, he (David) thought of his family, his mother and father. He took them to the king of Moab to stay there until everything finally settled with him. Considering the “madness” of King Saul, he could have turned on the parents of David and killed them. As children, we must always be concerned about the state of our parents. Some of us do not care about what happens to our parents. Some even don’t visit their parents for a long time. Please remember the Lord says it would go well with us if we honour them. (Ephesians 6:1-3)

In 1st Samuel 23, David was told that the people of Keilah had been attacked by the Philistines. The scriptures said in 1st Samuel 23:2, “Therefore David enquired of the Lord. Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the Lord said unto David go and smite the Philistines and save Keilah”. His men were afraid and in doubt whether they had to go or not. David enquired again, and the Lord confirmed his earlier statement. Every child of God has the Holy Ghost, and we must always ask for his view concerning every step we take in life. We must continually seek his counsel in every step we wish to take. David was exceedingly successful because he never failed to seek God’s counsel before embarking on any venture. This was the very aspect of Saul’s life that made him fail. He always made decisions to please his understanding and that which would make him appear good in the eyes and minds of the people. When David’s men were afraid to go to Keilah, he made a further enquiry and confirmed that they could go, and so they went. IT IS ALWAYS THE VOICE OF GOD THAT MATTERS; EVERY OTHER VOICE IS AS RAIN DROPS, IT HAS NO MEANING.

When David was feeling secure in Keilah, he heard that Saul was planning to attack him. He had to make a further enquiry from the Lord whether Saul would indeed attack him there, and the people of Keilah would give him up. The Lord answered him that Saul would come, and the people of Keilah would surely give him up.

1st Samuel 23:16, Jonathan came to David and strengthened him in the Lord. Jonathan was not blindly following his father to attack David; he knew God had chosen David, and he (David) would be the next king! The Bible says that in Proverbs 18:24, a man must show himself friendly. If you are a friend, be a friend at all times. Some are fine weather friends. Jonathan visited David when he was in the wilderness at a distressing moment. If an attack had broken out when he was with David, he would have been caught up in the fight.

Stay friendly at all times.

 PRAYER

Oh, Father, I pray my spiritual ears will be sensitive to your voice, and I will also be prompt to enquire about your leading each moment of my life.
