CONCUBINAGE

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2Sa 3:7 KJV “And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ishbosheth said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father’s concubine?

Concubinage is the act of cohabiting with a woman who is not your wife. This practice was very predominant under the old covenant. A number of the Patriarchs had concubines, and the scriptures never spoke against it. These days, many people, both Christians and non-Christians, argue that it is not wrong to keep a concubine. Surprisingly, this term is not mentioned even once in the New Testament. In spite of the fact that this is not mentioned in the New Testament, they claim it is right for us to practice it in this time, giving so many reasons. Some say the difference between the number of women to men is so huge that men should marry more women. Some also claim that since one woman cannot fully satisfy the sexual needs of a man, which can lead to prostate complications, it would be right for a man to have concubines.

People state these things because they do not understand the word of God as well as the power of God. During my write-up on polygamy, I explained that the bible is a progressive revelation of God’s dealings with men. I said that at the beginning of creation incest, that is a brother marrying his sister, was not an offence. At a point in time (Abraham and Sarah), the Lord told the Israelites that incest was a sin. Concubinage was a norm during the Old Testament era, yet in the New Testament, the scriptures have continually stated that a man should have one wife. Let’s see what the bible says about extramarital sexual activities. Heb 13:4 KJV: Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” The Holy Spirit taught that marriage is honourable to all, and the marriage bed or the only place God has allowed for sex to be practiced in the marital home. He went further to say that God would judge whoremongers and adulterers. Who is a whoremonger? Those who have multiple sexual partners. Adulterers are those who sleep with anyone outside their marital home.

Now, to those who try to give all kinds of reasons for practising these things, they do not know of the power of God. Please note that a Christian is never an ordinary man. He is a supernatural man who does not have the ordinary limitations of men. John 3:8 KJV “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.” The Christian is born of the Spirit, thus, he is supernatural. His life force is the very spirit of Jesus ( Gal 2:20). He has feelings like every man, but he is not controlled by the flesh and its appetites. Rom 8:10 KJV “And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.” This means the Christian is ruled by the Spirit of Christ and not his flesh. The unfortunate truth is that most Christians are living like mere men. They are simply carnal. Please refer to the following verses.

Mat 5:28 KJV But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

1Co 6:13 KJV” Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; an d the Lord for the body.

1Co 7:2 KJV” Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.”

1 Thess 4:3 KJV” For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:”

Fornication is simply any illicit sexual act. Dear Christian, concubinage is fornication, and there is no room to keep a concubine.

PRAYER:

Oh, Father, send a revival of truth among the church to forsake mundane practices, but to act rightly, that will bring glory to you, Lord.
