LET YOUR LIGHT SO SHINE

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Sam 29:9 KJV And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.

In verse 9, he said, “…I know thou art good and in my sight as an angel of God. David publicised his God so much that when Achish was speaking, he said “…As the Lord lives… “. This means David never stopped talking about his God, even before the king. Dear child of God, our Father calls on us to propagate the gospel through preaching, yet our daily actions of placing Jesus Christ first and living a very upright life also speak volumes about our faith. Let your light shine so much that men will glorify God for your good deeds.

The king described David as an angel. David’s actions were like a spirit. What could have made him lead such an upright life? Psalm 1 talks about the man with a very fruitful life. It says this man does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of the sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scornful, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law, he meditates day and night. This is the kind of person David was. A life of God’s word makes one manifest all the traits of a spirit. SPIRITUALITY IS SCRIPTURALLITY.

The Lord Jesus says we must let our light so shine, that men would give glory to our Father who is in heaven. Once again, we can only shine by living in the Spirit or allowing the Spirit to express himself through us. We do this by consciously living by the word of God. Dear one, you are light, by your new birth into Christ. Joh 8:12 KJV” Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

CONFESSION

By the grace of God, I am the light of the world. I am a city set on a hill.I shine to give light to all that are around me. Through my witness, the name of the Lord will be glorified.

BEWARE OF COMPROMISE AGAINST GOD

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 29:6” Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless, the lords favour thee not”.

A war between the Israelites and the Philistines was to be fought. David had wanted to fight on behalf of the Philistines, but the lords of the Philistines did not permit Him. It would have been a very big mistake. Never fight against the body of Christ.

David was unconsciously seeking to please a man at a very big cost. This king Achish of Philistine has been very kind to David. He had given him a big respite from the threat and pursuit of King Saul. The great refuge that he had from the Philistine king made him feel like one who must please him at all cost. David was going to fight the people of God on behalf of an uncircumcised king. His mission in life, by the anointing prophet Samuel poured on him, was to defend the people of God and to fight for the house of Israel.

In life, some of us encounter people who might be extremely kind to us. Their favourable disposition places a very strong demand to please them at all costs. Certain Christian ladies have given in to extra amorous advances because these men have been very good to them. Listen to the counsel of the Lord. Jer 17:5 KJV” Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.” Pleasing a man at the expense of our allegiance to God places us under a curse. Men are not God. Every kindness you receive from a man came from God. He uses men to bless us. Unfortunately, some of such men think it is their abilities or efforts that have made them of such help.

Dear one, you must be a man or woman of principle like Joseph, Daniel or the three Hebrew friends, Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego, who would not compromise no matter the pressure they suffered. Joseph’s resistance was to cost him his freedom, and to suffer imprisonment for over a decade (17 years in prison). I believe this woman showed lots of goodwill towards Him, all in setting the stage to win him into her bed. Joseph said Gen 39:9 KJV There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back anything from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? He had made up His mind to please God at all costs. God our Father is the ultimate judge,  and to Him alone would we be judged ultimately.

 PRAYER

Dear heavenly Father, I receive grace to remain faithful to you under all situations.

IS POLYGAMY OKAY FOR CHRISTIANS?

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1Sa 27:3 KJV” And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s wife.”

The Bible describes a vivid picture of all the men with David who went to live in the Philistines. 1st Samuel 27:3 says, “And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives Ahinoam and Abigail.

David, a man loved by God, had two wives. Does this give grounds for Christians to marry more than one wife? Some have argued that the male gender in the animal world has more than one wife. (A good study of the animal kingdom shows that this is not a very accurate assertion. Male wolves stay with one female in their lifetime, as they raise their family. Some bird species also stay together as a couple for life.)

At this stage, David had two wives. Was it the will of God to have two wives? It was not wrong then; is it right for the child of God to have two wives now? A number of the Patriarchs had two wives or more. Does God allow for two wives?  We can understand every doctrine correctly when we consider how and why God started it. In Genesis 2:24, the scripture says, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh”.

It takes only two people, a man and a woman, to become one flesh. Can a third person be said to be one flesh if there is a third person?  In Matthew 19, the Lord speaking on divorce said, Whosoever shall put away his wife except it be for fornication and shall marry another, commit adultery. Does this imply marrying a second wife makes you commit adultery? From what the Lord said, it implies so. Why did God allow it during the period before the new covenant?  The Bible reveals a progressive revelation of how God has been dealing with His people. PROGRESSIVE REVELATION MEANS GOD HAS NOT DEALT WITH HUMANITY THE SAME WAY FOR ALL PERIODS, BUT AT CERTAIN TIMES IN HISTORY HE RELATES WITH MEN IN A WAY HE CHOOSES. At some point in his dealings with men, some siblings married each other and gave birth. Adam’s children married each other to increase the human race. Later on, incest was no longer allowed. (Lev.20:17) Coming to our discussion on polygamy, at this period of the new covenant, the scriptures have consistently taught that each man must marry one wife (1st Tim 3:2, 1st Tim 3:12, 1st Tim 5:9). The Lord Jesus emphasised that two become one flesh. A third person can’t make it one flesh. Meanwhile, God has intended that marriage should always make two people, a man, and a woman, one flesh.

Some have argued that those who marry more than one woman have a longer life expectancy than those who marry only one. This applies to single people who do not live according to the scriptures. Those who live by the scriptures live very long.

 PRAYER

I pray for all children of God to submit themselves humbly to the revelation of God’s truth.

FURTHER STUDIES:

Matthew 19:9. And I say unto you, whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HIT A DEAD END

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 27:1 “And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand”.

Saul’s continual pursuit of David made him say that Saul would lay hold of him one day. He decided to leave the land of Israel and go to the Philistines to stay there. What did this decision imply?  It meant he was giving himself over to the enemies of Israel. Despite these dangers, he went and was accepted by King Achish. (God will always make a way for those who trust Him.) Now take this thought of wisdom; whenever you are torn between two views, ask the following: Your present state offers no hope but destruction in view, and the second option has a fifty-fifty chance of survival, please choose the second option. In 2nd Kings 7, there were four lepers in Samaria who were torn between staying in Samaria and dying of hunger or going to the camp of the Assyrians, where they would either be killed or accepted and given some food to eat. They decided to take the second option and went forward only to see no enemy present but an abundance of food. If you find yourself in such a situation, choose the second option that has a fifty percent chance of survival rather than to remain in the old state and die.

Several people are living in conditions that are going nowhere. These people have lived in such conditions for years with no potential for a change, like the four lepers; if they continued to stay in Samaria, hunger and death were certain, yet going forward offers them either death or life. Dear brother or sister, what kind of condition do you find yourself in? Does your present state promise no positive change, and then you have to seek the counsel of the Spirit to know what to do?

Some young Africans who found themselves in supposedly such conditions chose to go to Europe through the desert. Most of them suffered and died. This is not what I am saying.  It is a very big lie to think that there are no opportunities for growth and fulfilment in Africa. The truth is that there are more opportunities here than in Europe. Wherever needs and challenges abound, opportunities also abound. Start thinking outside the box, and you will see many opportunities to make a decent lifestyle and prosperity. Your choice must surely be instructed by the Spirit of God. In David’s story, the bible did not say he enquired of the LORD before going to the Philistine’s territory, yet I believe he did seek the counsel of the Spirit. If your present state offers no opportunities for growth and fulfilment, then start seeking the counsel of the Lord. Do not waste your days and life doing that one thing that brings no improvement or change to your life.

PRAYER

LORD, grant me the ability to know the best way for me to go and the courage to go that way.

NEVER FEAR THE ENEMY, FOR GOD ALWAYS TAKES CARE OF THEM.

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 26:7” So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him.”

Saul received a tip-off from the Zephites that David was hiding in the hill of Hachilah. Saul immediately left with his three thousand choice soldiers to pursue David. David sent out spies to know whether Saul had come indeed and also to know where King Saul was. David decided to go where Saul was. One may ask, how could David do such a thing? Saul was looking for you, and you to go where he was. Are you not giving your life into his hands?   The Bible says in Psalm 37:23 “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and He delights in his way”. David is a good man and sincere man. There is no evil found in him. His steps are therefore ordered by the Lord.

When David got to where Saul dwelt, Saul and all his three thousand soldiers were sleeping. Not even one person was awake to see David. God had sent a deep sleep on Saul and all his men. Dear child of God, do not fight the evil man who is scheming to put you down. Just maintain your uprightness. Keep being faithful to the Lord, and He will fight your enemies for you. How could an army unit of three thousand men sleep together at one time without even one soldier seeing that somebody had entered their camp? Let’s consider some of the utterances of David in Psalm 37:12-13 “The wicked plotteth against the just and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him; for he seeth that his day is coming”. This story once again encourages our hearts that our heavenly father is still the all-knowing, all-powerful, and would never fail us.

Maintain your faith in Him.

When David found Saul sleeping with his spear stacked to the ground, Abishai, David’s aide said shall I strike him dead?  David said to Abishai “And David said to Abishai destroy him not, for who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless?  The word anointed means appointed or consecrated. He is not an ordinary individual. In the case of Saul, he had fallen out of favour with God, yet He was the reigning king at the time. It would be wrong on the part of any man to judge and attempt to dethrone him. Dear brother, do not attack or rebel against your pastor. Don’t say he is out of touch with God, and so you would not be submissive to him. Wife, do not say your husband is a drunkard, and so you would not be submissive. Submit to all authorities over you. It is a submission to God. Citizens stop insulting the president of your nation. David lived long because he never lifted his hand, tongue, or desire against King Saul.

PRAYER

Father, help me to be submissive to all the authorities you have placed over me.

NEVER BE CONTROLLED BY ANGER

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 25:13” And David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword, and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men, and two hundred abode by the stuff “.

Please read 1 Samuel 25:1-44

In the passage, Nabal, a very rich farmer, was shearing his sheep. This period was a time when such farmers expressed open-handed hospitality and were kind to their neighbours. (Gen 38:12-13. David sent some of his men to Nabal to give him and his men some of the goods he was sharing.

Nabal blatantly refused. David became furious and gathered his men to attack Nabal. David, at this occasion, did not make any inquiries from the Lord, about whether to go or not. He was overtaken with anger.

Anger overshadows, our judgements such that we may easily throw away certain laid-down principles that we function with. The Bible says to be angry but sin not, let not the sun go down over your anger (Ephesians 4:26). In our moments of anger, we have to be obedient to the instructions concerning anger. It says that although you can be angry, don’t act instantly out of anger (James 1:.19-20) That would definitely lead to sin. Secondly don’t allow your anger to stay in your heart over a long time. That would give place to a demon to take over your life. (Ephesians 4:27). These are simple instructions concerning anger, yet many people fall short and ultimately regret various unfortunate actions they undertake. Note that all throughout David’s dealings around this period, he always enquired of the LORD, yet at this moment he forgot about the Lord and was going to kill.

Please listen to what Abigail said to David “Now therefore my Lord, as the Lord lives, and as thy soul lives seeing the LORD HAS WITHHELD YOU FROM COMING TO SHED BLOOD and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my Lord, be as Nabal”. Sister Abigail reminded David that it is the Lord who has prevented him from shedding blood and avenging himself with his hand. God did not want him to go that way, and if he had enquired earlier, the Lord would have asked him not to go.

After the wise sayings of Abigail, which were prophetic and inspired, David remarked….” Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent you this day to meet me and blessed be your advice, and blessed are you, which has kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand. (1st Samuel 25:32-33)

Another lesson that we have to carry along is that in our moments of anger, we must be ready to listen to others’ pleas that come to us. Whenever you are angry, and you are ready to take any action to satisfy your ego, please give an ear to any other pleas that another party or even the one who has offended you makes.

As much as you can stay free from avenging with your own hands, do so. Prov 16:32 KJV” He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.”

PRAYER

In the name of Jesus, I do not yield to any negative emotions of anger and its subsequent misbehaviours. My emotions are always under my control through the grace of God.

FEAR GOD AND LOVE GOD’S ANOINTED

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 24:5. “And it came to pass afterwards, that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt”.

In 1st Samuel 24:2, Saul’s kept pursuing David. This time, he chose three thousand men out of all Israel and went to look for David. He followed him to a cave where David was supposed to be hiding. Saul slept out of exhaustion, and David found him sleeping. David’s men asked him to kill him because God had delivered him into his hand. David refused but cut off a piece of Saul’s cloth. David did not do anything to harm him, yet his heart smote him because he had cut Saul’s garment.

David was a man who had great respect for God and the people God had anointed to lead. His heart smote him not because he had hurt Saul but because he had cut a piece of his garment. How many of us blatantly attack men of God? Saul was not right in any of his actions, yet it was not David’s duty to judge, attack, or condemn him. Romans 14:4 “Who art thou that judges another man’s servant? To his master he stands or falls. Yeah, he shall be holden up; for God is able to make him stand”.

Please consider the above scripture. Who are you to judge another man’s servant? That man of God you are attacking is God’s servant, and you don’t have the right to attack and judge him or her. One may ask, what about a man whose actions and teachings are simply problematic? Do not accept any wrong teaching, neither do you have to follow any wrong teachings. What you must not do is don’t attack the man. Some of us insult such men and judge them. Do not do such things. Leave them to God and the Holy Ghost. At best, pray and intercede for them. Once again, you have every right to talk about their teaching that is not biblical, instructing others to stay away from such teachings, but please don’t get personal.

In the story, David left where Saul was sleeping to a far point and called on him. He never showed any rudeness in his language to Saul. Please never be rude to your pastor, your father, your mother, your elder, and the nation’s leaders. Please respect authority. To live long in the land, give great regard to every authority above you.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, you have set in place various authorities above us. Help us to regard them highly. in their mistakes help us not to attack them but to stand in and make intercessions for them.

TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR PARENTS

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 22:3. And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.

During Saul’s pursuit of David, he (David) thought of his family, his mother and father. He took them to the king of Moab to stay there until everything finally settled with him. Considering the “madness” of King Saul, he could have turned on the parents of David and killed them. As children, we must always be concerned about the state of our parents. Some of us do not care about what happens to our parents. Some even don’t visit their parents for a long time. Please remember the Lord says it would go well with us if we honour them. (Ephesians 6:1-3)

In 1st Samuel 23, David was told that the people of Keilah had been attacked by the Philistines. The scriptures said in 1st Samuel 23:2, “Therefore David enquired of the Lord. Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the Lord said unto David go and smite the Philistines and save Keilah”. His men were afraid and in doubt whether they had to go or not. David enquired again, and the Lord confirmed his earlier statement. Every child of God has the Holy Ghost, and we must always ask for his view concerning every step we take in life. We must continually seek his counsel in every step we wish to take. David was exceedingly successful because he never failed to seek God’s counsel before embarking on any venture. This was the very aspect of Saul’s life that made him fail. He always made decisions to please his understanding and that which would make him appear good in the eyes and minds of the people. When David’s men were afraid to go to Keilah, he made a further enquiry and confirmed that they could go, and so they went. IT IS ALWAYS THE VOICE OF GOD THAT MATTERS; EVERY OTHER VOICE IS AS RAIN DROPS, IT HAS NO MEANING.

When David was feeling secure in Keilah, he heard that Saul was planning to attack him. He had to make a further enquiry from the Lord whether Saul would indeed attack him there, and the people of Keilah would give him up. The Lord answered him that Saul would come, and the people of Keilah would surely give him up.

1st Samuel 23:16, Jonathan came to David and strengthened him in the Lord. Jonathan was not blindly following his father to attack David; he knew God had chosen David, and he (David) would be the next king! The Bible says that in Proverbs 18:24, a man must show himself friendly. If you are a friend, be a friend at all times. Some are fine weather friends. Jonathan visited David when he was in the wilderness at a distressing moment. If an attack had broken out when he was with David, he would have been caught up in the fight.

Stay friendly at all times.

 PRAYER

Oh, Father, I pray my spiritual ears will be sensitive to your voice, and I will also be prompt to enquire about your leading each moment of my life.

TELL THE TRUTH ALWAYS, FOR THE CONSEQUENCES OF LIES ARE VERY GRIEVOUS

KEY SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 4:15” But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”

In 1st Samuel 21, David visited Ahimelech the Priest at Nob. Ahimelech   asked David, “What brings him there?” David said the King had commanded him to do a work that no one should know anything about. King Saul had not asked David to do any such work. David wanted some bread and even a sword. We realized that David lied to the priest.

In 1st Samuel 22:  -23 King Saul heard that David had visited the Priest Ahimelech. He went there and eventually asked his servant Doeg, the Edomite, to kill the priest and other Levites who were with him because they met with David. Actions that proceed from lies do not have the approval of the spirit. On many occasions, Satan takes advantage of the wrong action and causes trouble to some of the persons involved. When Abraham lied to king Abimelech in Genesis, who took Sarah as his wife, and had all the men stricken with a great plague (Genesis 12:17.) Abraham’s wrong action brought God’s anger on the people. In the case of David, his desire to have bread and a sword led him to the priest but ultimately led to the slaughter of all those priests. David admitted in 1st Sam 22:22 that he had occasioned the death of the household of Ahimelech

Do not act on the premise of lies. Satan always takes advantage of that step to cause big trouble. Many people do not mind telling lies anytime and anyhow. Our key scripture says we must speak the truth to one another so we can grow into Christ in all things. Speaking the truth strengthens our moral capacity. The more you tell the truth, the more your inner being is strengthened. The scripture says we grow to be like Jesus. This is one sure way to manifest the Christ nature that is already residing in you.

After David’s encounter with Ahimelech, he went to Gath (the land of Philistine) he was taken to king Achish (1st Samuel 21:10-15). The people of Gath easily identified him. Instantly, David had to behave like a madman. This was an act of wisdom to save his life. Achish, the king said, “Why bring this madman here to play the madness before me?” David was sent away safely because he was smart enough to act wisely. This instant was not an act of a lie. It was an act of wisdom or self-protection.

In the first instant, if David had told the truth, the priest would have known what action to take concerning Doeg, who later killed all the priests under Saul’s instruction. Always tell the truth.

  PRAYER

Heavenly Father, help us to know the right action to take in every incident. Grant us wisdom to act in obedience to your perfect will always

1 Samuel 21:13” And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard”.

 YOUR POTENTIAL ATTRACTS PERSECUTION

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 20:1” And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, what have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life”

PLEASE READ THROUGH 1ST SAMUEL 20

David came to Jonathan and said unto Jonathan, what have I done, what is my iniquity and what is my sin before thy father that he seeks my life?

This is a distressing question that David asked. Many of us might have asked similar questions at one time or another. Ours may not be about a man attacking us, but situations that oppose us. Please note that every special calling has a special opposition from the devil. Moses was chased to be killed at birth because he was the promised deliverer of the Jews when they were in slavery. Our Lord Jesus was pursued by Satan right from his mother’s womb till the final day he died on the cross. Every Christian is a potential deliverer of multitudes. He is a master over Satan and his host. You are a threat to the devil. You are number one on his hit list.

The sad truth is that some Christians don’t recognize that they are appointed or anointed deliverers. The destiny of multitudes rests in their hands. The enemy is not bothered about such people because he has succeeded in making them lose sight of the real call upon their lives. They are no longer a threat to him. Those who have not allowed their vision and calling to be watered down by satanic destructions are those who he does everything to frustrate. Stand your ground, brother or sister. This was what Saul attempted to do to David. Satan used Saul to prevent David from ascending the throne.

In 1st Samuel 20:42, David and Jonathan re-established their covenant. Jonathan demonstrated fully that he would always keep his terms of the covenant. He knew David would become the next king, although, in human terms, he should have been the next king. He did not allow any form of selfishness to creep into his heart. He risked his life to save David. (1st Sam. 20:33) David also determined to keep his part of the covenant.

As humans, we relate with people on various levels, having different terms of engagement or covenants with them. We have employment partnerships or covenants. Some rules and regulations bind us to certain groups we belong to. We must be careful to be faithful to these terms and rules that bind us. Don’t work with someone and steal from them. This is breaking the covenant between you and them. Marriage is a very major covenant that we must not play down on. Please understand that God is the witness and third party to these covenants that we go into. The only covenants that we don’t get involved in are blood covenants and other ones that call on other gods (demons) to arbitrate.  God, our Father, is always the witness to our covenants. When we break our part, we have sinned against him and would invite His judgement against us.

 PRAYER

O Father help us always be faithful to all covenants or agreements we make with people. Help us to appreciate the importance of honouring every covenant we make with people.
