REVELATIONAL GIFTS: WORD OF WISDOM

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 12:8 ” For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit”;

We now look at the revelational gifts. These include the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, and the discernment of spirits.

We would look into the details of the gift of the word of wisdom. The word of wisdom is when the Holy Spirit gives someone a message about the future concerning a brother or the church and the corresponding actions to be taken. It is a revelation of God’s wisdom concerning the fellow, the congregation, or even the nation … This gift tells forth what is yet to happen. Most prophets operate mostly in all the gifts of revelation.

The gift of the word of wisdom is not just a wise saying. There is a difference between the gift of wisdom and the gift of the word of wisdom A man like King Solomon had the gift of wisdom and so he was a very wise man. The word of wisdom is knowledge gained into a little of God’s wisdom concerning a future event. We saw this being demonstrated in almost all the prophets. An example is in 2nd Kings 7:1, the prophet Elisha prophesied.”Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the Lord, thus saith the Lord; tomorrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel in the gate of Samaria”. The message given by the prophet happened just as he predicted.

In the New Testament, there were several prophets. One such prophet was Agabus. Acts 11:28 “And there stood up one of them named Agabus and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world; which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar”. The apostles also operated in this gift.

As the scripture taught in 1st Corinthians 12, the gift of the word of wisdom also manifests among the members of the congregations of God. The Holy Spirit does these things to the profit or to benefit all members of the church.

This gift gives the children of God an opportunity to know what is in the future and to act rightly to please God and to save themselves from the traps of the devil. It is a strong weapon to frustrate the activities of the devil. Some brethren start calling themselves prophets the moment this gift begins to manifest through them. Some begin to feel so proud that they leave their respective places of worship to start a new church. This is very wrong. This gift was given to the church, but you were the candidate the Holy Spirit chose to manifest through for the rest. Do not leave your congregation, stay, and let God’s purpose for the church be realised. Let heads of churches also allow such brethren to use the gift to bless the church. May there be order in God’s house

PRAYER

Lord, make the church understand the dealings of the Spirit in these matters and help us all to relate to one another in its use rightly.

FURTHER STUDIES.

Acts 21:10-11 ” And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judea a certain prophet, named Agabus. And when he came unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles”.

2 Timothy 3:1. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come”.

THE GIFT OF PROPHECY

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 14:3 ” But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort”.

Prophecy is a supernatural gift of the Holy Spirit that He inspires one to give a message to other believers to edify, exhort, and comfort them.

Prophecy in this sense is different from foretelling or to predict. It does not come in an unknown language. It is always in the dialect of the audience or congregation.

The Bible says in 1st Corinthians 14:4 that “He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself but he that prophecies edifies the church”. Speaking in tongues would only build the individual up, but the one who gives a message in prophecy edifies the church. This means he builds the church up.

From our key scripture, prophecies come with the following purposes.

  1. To edify the church.
  2. To exhort the church
  3. To comfort or strengthen the church.

Any inspired word that does not play any of the above-stated purposes may be another gift or may not be a word from the Lord. Prophecies come to strengthen the church. Prophecies that cast fear on the congregation may not be inspired by the Spirit of God. Some people have used prophecies wrongly. Prophecies could, therefore, be abused. 1st Corinthians 14:29 says” Let the prophets speak two or three and let the others judge”. There is the need to consider prophecies when they are given, so you can judge, whether it meets the scriptural standard.

In certain meetings, two people may be prophesying at the same time. This should not be so. One of them must keep quiet. The spirit of the Lord is not a spirit of confusion. 1st Corinthians 14:32

A note of caution: Do not call yourself a prophet because the Holy Spirit inspires you to prophesy. A prophet is an office that God appoints for ministry and comes along with several gifts of the Holy Spirit. (We would look at the ministry of the prophet when we come to consider ministerial offices)1 Thessalonians 5:20 Despise not prophesyings.

PRAYER

Father, I pray for the stirring of the power of the spirit amid your children to allow the gift of prophecy to function and function properly in Jesus’ name.

CATEGORIES OF THE GIFTS: GIFT OF UTTERANCE

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 12:4″ Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.”

In our previous study, we said the Bible reveals to us nine supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit. These nine gifts could be further divided into three groups. They are:

  1. Gifts of utterance
  2. Gifts of Revelation
  3. Power Gifts.

We would first consider the Gifts of utterance. This group of gifts has to do with saying or giving a message to others. They include diverse kinds of tongues, interpretations of tongues and prophecy. We would consider the gift of Divers kinds of tongues. This kind of gift is very different from what we find the Bible speaking about in 1st Corinthians 14:2, 14. 1st Corinthians 14:14 reads “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful”.This is a special prayer language that the Holy Spirit imparts to any Christian who desires to have to enhance his spiritual life. It is not meant to be used to give a message to others. It is used in praying to God.

In 1st Corinthians 14:27, 28 the Bible said the following “If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two or at the most by three and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church and let him speak to himself and to God”. The gift of a divers kind of tongue is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit meant to give a message to the whole church in tongues so that he or she who gave the message or another person interpret it. We see in the scripture above, that is 1st Corinthians 14:27, 28, the apostle says in the church there should be about two messages for the church given in tongues or at most it must be three. If there is no one to interpret then that person must stop giving his message to the church in tongues.

The gift of Divers kinds of tongues needs someone to interpret it. It is always a message meant for the whole church. It is not a prayer unto God or speaking unto God. It is a sign to all unbelievers who join the brethren (1st Cor. 14:22)
Such messages must be interpreted. There should be someone with the gift of interpretation of tongues to interpret it into the common and known dialect of the congregation. On this note, I wish to add that the gift of interpretation of tongues goes alongside the Divers kinds of tongues.

The gift of interpretation of tongues is a supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit that enables one to interpret a message given in tongues for the congregation of believers.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father I pray that the Holy Spirit will stir in the hearts of all believers to desire earnestly for these gifts of the spirit.

FURTHER STUDIES.

1 Corinthians 14:21″ In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord”.

1 Corinthians 14:27-28” If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God”.

INTRODUCTION TO THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 12:1″ Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant”.

Spiritual gifts as the Holy Spirit led apostle Paul to write about in our key scripture, is one of the topics that have been very silent in other parts of the Bible although we see its manifestation throughout the Bible.

Our topic for discussion spans through 1st Corinthians 12:1-11. Verses 4 to 6 reveal the working of the Trinity or Father, Son and the Holy Ghost, Playing various roles in the functioning, administration and operation of the gifts. In verse 4 the Holy Spirit reveals the diversity of the gifts that is the different divisions of the Spirit. Our Lord Jesus sees to the different administration of the gifts. The administration is that different people having the same gift may administer it differently. The Father reveals the diversities of operations. Here the Father sees to the divers operations of the gifts.

These gifts are very important to the church of God. When the supernatural gifts are in operation, the church’s evangelistic work is greatly enhanced. “Every Christian must earnestly desire for the gifts”. 1st Corinthians 14:1″Follow after charity and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that you may prophecy”.

Please note this: these spiritual gifts are different from talents (a talent is a natural ability given to an individual by God. A talent could be operated at will. There are countless talents. Examples are singing, playing football, barbering etc. Spiritual gifts are divine abilities that are solely manifested by the Holy Spirit through a child of God The person can’t operate it at will) 1st Corinthians 12:7 “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal “.Note that they are the manifestations of the Spirit. The supernatural gifts are never from one’s ability, it is purely the Holy Spirit who manifests them at His will. There are nine spiritual or supernatural gifts in all. They are as follows:

  1. Word of wisdom (verse 8)
  2. Word of knowledge (verse 8)
  3. Discernment of spirits (verse 10)
  4. Divers kinds of tongues (verse 10)
  5. Interpretation of tongues (Verse 10)
  6. Gifts of prophecy (Verse 10)
  7. Gift of faith (Verse 9)
  8. Gifts of healing (Verse 9)
  9. Gift of working of miracle (Verse 9)

These gifts can be divided further into 3 groups.

  1. Revelational gifts: these include, words of wisdom, words of knowledge and discernment of spirits.
  2. Gifts of utterance: These include, divers kinds of tongues, interpretation of tongues and gift of prophecy.
  3. Power gifts: these include, the gift of faith, gifts of healing and gift of the working of miracles.

In our subsequent studies, we would look at each gift, what it is and how it functions.

PRAYER

Lord, thank you for these supernatural gifts given to the Church of God. I pray that these gifts would be manifested in all congregations, to reveal your glory and power.

1 Corinthians 12: 6. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all”.

LET THE PEACE OF GOD GUIDE YOU

KEY SCRIPTURE: Colossians 3:15 “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”

The Holy Spirit counsels us to let the peace of God rule in our hearts. The word ‘rule’ also means ‘to be an umpire’,’ to decide’, direct, or to control. The peace of God in our hearts, among other things, also comes into play when making decisions that one may not be so clear about the will of God. When our hearts are at peace after making certain decisions, it is mostly indicative that we are acting in the will of God.

Decisions like choosing a life partner, whether to make a particular journey, accept a kind of employment, and many more are all the types that the Bible does not directly tell you what to do. We are always faced with making choices or decisions that the will of God may not be known. The Bible says, “Let the peace of God be the decider or your director.”

To be at peace means to be one with yourself. Your mind and heart are settled on the issue you may be grappling with. Romans 14:17 says “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost”. The kingdom of God is the rule of God. It means God is in charge of affairs. Peace in your heart is a sign that God is in charge.

When our actions are not in agreement with the Holy Spirit, He is grieved. When the Spirit is grieved, we find out that our peace is gone. The Holy Spirit is our guide. He tells us what we must do. Anytime we follow his leading, He is pleased, and so we also feel satisfied within or peaceful. To let the peace of God rule in our hearts also means to allow the Spirit of God to lead us.

Allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us is not a one-day affair; we develop into it as we practice the word of God. Romans 12:1 tells us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice. This means yielding your body to the instructions of the Holy Ghost. The instructions of the Spirit are simply the word of God. As we practice the word of God, we grow to be sensitive to the moment by the moment, leading to the Holy Spirit. We would also begin to know when the Holy Spirit is pleased with us or grieved about what we may be doing.

Whenever your heart is disturbed about anything, the first thing you must consider is: Does this issue agree with the word of God? If it does agree with the scripture but you are still not at peace then pray asking the Lord to lead you, He will speak to you and as you agree, it will be shown by a heart of peace. .

CONFESSION

God’s peace in my heart is my guide. As I allow His word to rule me, the Holy Spirit dictates my peace. Every confusion is dissolved because I follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.

BELIEVE THE GOSPEL. TO ENCOUNTER GOD’S POWER

KEY SCRIPTURE: Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek”.

One truth that has been a quest for many is about knowing or encountering the power of God. Many people find themselves in all kinds of predicaments and want to know how to contact the power of God for an answer.

The Apostle Paul in our key scripture shows us what the power of God is, as well as what to do to benefit from this power. He reveals that the gospel or good news is the power of God. This statement is presented in another form in 1st CORINTHIANS 1:18 “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness but unto us which are saved it is the power of God: The message of the cross is the power of God. It is about the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1st Corinth 15:3&4)

The death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus marked the end of the legal right of Satan’s reign over men. When Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden, he surrendered the authority God gave him over the earth to Satan. He and all his descendants became subject to the devil. Romans 5:12 put it this way “wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world and death by sin: and so death passed upon all men, for that all men have sinned.” The nature of Satan which is sin and death was transferred into men. The law of Sin and death began to work in men. (Romans 8:2)

In Luke 4:6, during the temptation of the Lord Jesus, the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them for that is delivered unto me and to whomsoever I will I will give it”. When the devil said this, the Lord did not challenge him. Who delivered this authority into his hands? Was it God? No, it was Adam. Satan, therefore, assumed the reign of the earth from them. It took the death of Jesus to seize this authority from him because he paid the price for all humanity. The Lord Jesus then said the following after his resurrection. In Matthew 28:18, he said “….All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

The end of the legality of satan-s reign over mankind means the ushering in of God’s power that sets men free.
Believing the gospel, that is the death burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus has become the only means to access the power of God. Anybody who believes in the gospel receives God’s power to handle any condition that is tormenting his life.

It is the answer to every human problem whether it is the Salvation of your soul, sickness in the body, a bad character, demonic bondage, mental torment or anything that has to do with men receiving peace of mind, the gospel will answer if only you would believe it.

CONFESSION

Indeed, there is no condition that is a worry to the human mind that the gospel has no answer. I believe in the gospel, and so I always walk out of any challenge that comes against me.

CHRIST IS OUR LIFE

KEY SCRIPTURE: Colossian 3:4 KJV “When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”

The preceding verse to our key scripture says”Col 3:3 KJV “For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.”.This verse shows us how Christ became our life. On the cross, our Lord took our place. He became sin. This was our life and nature. Within this nature was absolute failure and total dominance by Satan. We were children and bore the very life of Satan John 8:44 .The only means by which men could become children of God was the complete killing of this nature called sin, as revealed in 2nd Corinth 5:212Co 5:21 KJV” For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” Jesus’ death was the end of our old nature.

At the resurrection of Jesus, we resurrected with Him. Hebrews 2:10 put it this way,” For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings” Jesus through His suffering has brought us into glory. We share His life, we are partakers of His glory. We are like the fruit of a planted seed. He was the seed that was planted, while we are the fruits.
The life of the fruit is the very life of the seed, and that is what we are. Jesus is our life. This life which is our real life, is hidden in Christ and God. Jesus is one with the Father, His life is the life of the Father, and that is where we are. We dwell in God.

In heaven, there are no two or three thrones, there is only one. Rev 4:2 KJV” And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.” The Lord Jesus is the one John saw on the throne because He is the alpha and the Omega, the God of the Universe, the Father of Glory. Isa 9:6 KJV “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Our life is hidden in Jesus in God. Hallelujah!. We are physically living and walking on this earth, yet the life we have is Christ ( Gal 2:20). We must act, think and relate with men as Christ would have done. That is our real personality. We are actually from above and carry Christ’s authority and Christ’s power. This is the reason there are always angels to assist us, for we are sons of God. Heb 1:14 KJV” Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

These truths emphasize our uncompromised security. It also shows us how we ought to live on this earth. We must understand our mission and mandate our methods to fulfil our mission.

CONFESSION.

Glory be to the Lord. Christ is my life, and I live in heaven, yet I am living on this earth. My life here is the life of Christ
I have His life, so I bear His authority, His power, His favour with the Father, and the same angelic support and protection. What a life. I am light to my word and answer to the questions of many.

CHRISTIANS, SPIRITUALLY LIVE IN HEAVEN

KEY SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 12:22 “But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,”

(Read Hebrews: 12:22–29)

The above verse and a few that follow it show some of the mysteries that the Holy Spirit revealed to Apostle Paul.

In this verse, the Holy Spirit shows us that the believer is spiritually in heaven. He describes heaven as Mount Sion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and an innumerable company of Angels. What also comes to us is the sense of being aware of such an elevation. This understanding also deepens our sainthood. It simply implies we are holy men and women living in a holy environment. We must, therefore, walk, talk, and do things in a manner that depicts saints of God.

Every Christian hopes and anticipates to be in heaven. By understanding this verse, you are already there. Your continual obedience to the word would ultimately warrant your continual stay in this place. This is one of the greatest revelations to be given to the church. The scripture added that we live amid an innumerable company of angels. Angels are God’s messengers who play various roles in heaven, and one of their roles is to minister to the heirs of salvation; that is, you and I, who are born again. Hebrews 1:14 “Are they not ministering spirits who are sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation”. These angels come to serve us upon the instruction of the Father. Note: they obey the father’s instruction, so, do not ask for help from them. Ask the father to send them on your behalf. We may ask the Father to assign them to various roles or our assistance.

What the scripture assures us is that we are in the midst of an innumerable company of angels. This must give us a lot of encouragement and also to kick out every fear from our lives. Another challenge faced by a lot of us is when our minds try to figure out how God would work out certain things for us. We need not worry our heads over how things would turn out. We have an uncountable number of angels who are there to assist us. Be always expectant of supernatural experiences.

CONFESSIONS

I am not an ordinary human on this Earth, I live in the presence of the Father and amid Angels. They always work for my comfort and deliverance. Glory be to God.

FORGIVE BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN THROUGH CHRIST’S DEATH

KEY SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 4:32. And be ye kind one to another,
tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Once again, the Holy Spirit reveals a truth that had not been brought to the fore when the Lord was with His disciples.

In Mark 11:25 the Lord said the following to his disciples “And when ye stand praying forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses“. In this instance, the Lord links our ability to be given forgiveness to us, forgiving others. A similar statement was made when the Lord taught the disciples a sample prayer in Matthew 6:12 “And forgive our debt, as we forgive our debtors”.The Lord taught these things before he had not gone to the cross for us.

Apostle Paul, through insight gained from the Holy Spirit, after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus, taught that now we must forgive because Christ has already forgiven us. This is the grace of God. God calls on us to forgive all who hurt us because we have already been forgiven by Jesus. This allows us to consider how much God has loved us. Dear child of God, what price did the Lord pay for us to be acceptable before the Father? He sacrificed His life so we could be acceptable before the Father. Is there any sacrifice dearer than this? This truth leaves us with no stronger reason why we should not forgive our offenders.

The Lord once taught us that we would always have people offending us. (Luke 17:1) We must forgive all those who offend us. Several people are hurting because of what their loved ones might have done to them. Many homes are under deep stress because of offences. Our key scripture shows us that Jesus, despite our offences against him, gave his life for us. Just consider what 2nd Corinthians 5:19 says” To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their (sins) trespasses unto them…..” God allowed our Lord Jesus to die for our sins, and now he is not counting our sins against us. If he does not count our sins against us, why count your wife’s offences against her? Why count your husband’s offences against him? What about your friend, your neighbour, or even your mother or father?

What happens if we fail to forgive? We grieve the Holy Spirit, and we allow devils to torment us. Ephesians 4:30, Matthew 18:34. Do not refuse to forgive, for it is too expensive not to.

CONFESSIONS

Christ sacrificed His life to forgive me all my sins, I would also forgive everyone who offends me no matter the gravity of it. I have the ability to forgive.

Matthew 18:33-34 ” Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow servant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him”.

HOW TO AVOID WEAK FAITH

KEY SCRIPTURE: Romans 4:19 “And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about a hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb”:

Our key scripture gives us a good clue on how to avoid weak faith. It says Abraham was not weak in faith; how? He did not consider or look at his body, which was as good as dead when he was a hundred years old, and neither did the deadness of Sarah’s womb.

This is a very important lesson to learn so we do not weaken our faith. Faith, although very potent and can achieve amazing feats, can be easily weakened and brought to zero if you look at the naturally negative things.

The lady who is trusting God for a husband must not look at the wrinkles on her face. She must not count the years rolling by. The couple expecting a miracle baby must stop looking at their age and other negative symptoms. Don’t look at your weak and hurting body if you expect to receive a miracle healing. They would weaken your faith.

In Matthew 14:30, the Bible says” But when he saw the wind boisterous he was afraid and beginning to sink he cried saying Lord save me”. The preceding story is about Peter. He started walking on the water when the Lord asked him to come. He walked quite a distance because when he called on the Lord to save him, the Lord just stretched his hand to lift him. Peter’s faith was deflated by what he saw. Faith is strengthened by the word of God. Abraham kept considering the promise of God and gave glory to God. This made his faith strong. He called himself the father of many nations. Please learn that once again, faith is a spiritual supernatural virtue. It has nothing to do with physical natural situations. Whether the condition is improving or delaying it adds nothing to faith. Faith ONLY thrives on the word of God. It should never be on how things are improving or not improving.

Tell yourself I will not look at the natural conditions. Even if it is improving, my sole consideration is the word of God. Listen faith COMETH by hearing and hearing by the word of God(Romans 10:17). Faith is not a product of the natural state of affairs.

Get your faith firm and strong by focusing on the word.

Note: the faith that is solely dependent on the word is real and can’t fail.

  CONFESSION.

The word of God is the only source of my faith. I feed on the word, talk about the word, and act on the word. This always brings me amazing results.

THOUGHT: THE FAITH THAT IS SOLELY DEPENDENT ON THE WORD IS REAL, AND CAN’T FAIL
