OVERCOMING TEMPTATION

KEY SCRIPTURE: Heb 4:15 KJV “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”

The Lord Jesus was absolutely victorious in all He did. Our key scripture says He was tempted at various points yet He was without sin. In St Matthew narration about Him, he talked about His temptation in the wilderness, immediately after being baptised and subsequently filled with the Holy Spirit. The bible said, He was led into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil Matt 4:1. In this time of temptation He fasted. The reading suggests He fasted in order to overcome the temptation. The other view is that whiles He fasted the tempter also did His job.

In all, there were three major temptations. Mark 1:13 also suggests He was there with wild beasts. All these added up to the temptations. The wild beasts could have stirred up fear, yet the Lord will have none of that. Fear had no place in Him.

What is the essence of temptations. The tempter seeks to make the child of God to break faith with God. One’s ability to overcome the temptation, strengthens His commitment, and knowledge of the Lord. According to James 1:2-4 temptations make us perfect and want nothing, only if we overcome.

The temptations of the Lord were in three categories.

1. To satisfy the appetite of the flesh, without waiting for the appropriate occasion. He was hungry, and so must use His power to make stone to become bread to satisfy that hunger.

This would mean, He becomes a slave of His appetite.

Today’s great failure of our institutions and world is because men are slaves of their appetite, and they would do anything to satisfy that appetite. It could be sex, drink, food or what have you?

2. Once again he the devil challenges His sonship. He played on His pride. He then asked Him to throw Himself down so the angels would save Him. Satan suggested to him to abuse power again, but justifies His trick with a scriptural quotation. Please the fact that one quotes the scriptures does not mean he or she is right. The Lord saw his error and then gave him the right scripture. Have a good understanding of the scriptures, so you would not be deceived.

3. Lastly, he tempted Him with an offer of reigning over the kingdoms of the earth, and so demanded that Jesus worship Him. He tricked Him this time too, by telling Jesus all the kingdoms were his, and must worship Him. Worshipping Him means Jesus had submitted His superior authority into His hands. The Lord refused, and declared that only God must be worshipped.

How did the Lord overcome all these?

Jesus had decided to please and honour His Father before His personal considerations. Failure always results from placing our own interests before God’s word. The Lord then used the word to stop the devil.

CONFESSIONS

Father, you are highly exalted, I live to honour you. My interest only leads to failure. It is in pleasing you that I win over the tricks and strategies of the wicked one. I will always seek your glory and honour.

Matt 4:10 KJV “Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”

WHAT MOVES GOD MOST

KEY SCRIPTURE: Heb 11:6 KJV” But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

In this series of studies, we are looking at the various aspects of the personality of Jesus, His priorities, and his general philosophies on life. The Lord led the most successful life since He did everything to please the Father. He remains the best example for anyone to follow. During His days on earth, He showed us what moves God the most. He said faith in God moves God into action. Our key scripture shows us that without faith, it is impossible to please or attract God. The Lord Jesus was always moved with excitement when He encountered anyone who expressed faith in God, or Him. In Matt 8:9 when the centurion who sent for Jesus to come to heal his servant, sent to tell Jesus that, he was not fitting to have Jesus under his roof, but the Lord should only say the word and his servant would be healed. The Lord was amazed at that answer. He quickly asked them to go for the servant was healed.

Why is faith in God so important to Him?

God is a Spirit. Faith is operated through the heart, where the spirit of man is Faith is also an act of the spirit. God can only be encountered not in the senses or reason but through the spirit. Believing God also declares that God is just or righteous. God subsequently justifies he who believes in Him. Rom 10:10 KJV “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.” We believe with the heart and so are justified or made righteous. The Bible is such an amazing book because it is a compilation of the exploits of people of faith.

Believing God’s word is of great importance to us. Jesus described little children as the kind of people who have easy access to heaven and the Father as well. Children are very receptive and easily yield. This is what faith in God is all about. It is a total surrender unto God. Faith is casting your life on the faithfulness of God.

Faith in God is not a mental issue yet it begins with a decision to let the heart yield to what the word says. It grows by yielding to the word of God. Faith also grows through meditation on the word. Finally, our faith gets more robust through practicing the word.

Matt 7:24 KJV” Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:”

Just consider this scripture. Heb 11:33 KJV” Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, He Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.”

CONFESSION

Thank you, heavenly Father, for the gift of faith. Faith is not an initiative of us men, rather it comes from you, God by your faith in us we overcome every onslaught of the devil.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”.

Our key scripture implies that Jesus is the only way to God. To say that I am the way means other ways lead elsewhere. Why is this so?

There is a big difference in the functioning of Christianity as compared to or related to other faiths. All the other faiths, function by laws, codes of conduct, and practices that the practitioners go through to please the Supreme Being. The new age teaching revolves everything around man. They teach that man has inherent powers that could make him achieve all things by himself. This particular kind of faith does not have a specific supreme being.

In Christianity, God has come to live in men through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Revelation 3:20, 1st Corinthians 3:16). The Christian does not live by his natural life, but the Spirit of Jesus lives through his flesh. Galatians 2:20” I am crucified with Christ nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me”. It is only in Christianity that God relates with His subjects as children. God becomes our Father. The relationship we have with Him becomes inseparable.  This is very different from what all other religions practice.

In Christianity, we are not followers who are trying to be acceptable as we have in most of the religions. We become one with Christ. 1st Corinthians 6:17 “He that is joined unto the Lord is one Spirit”.  John 15:1-8 gives a metaphorical representation of it. It says Jesus is the true vine, the Father is the husbandman, and we are the branches. The branches and the vine share the same life. Christianity is a mysterious relationship between the Christian and Christ. Ephesians 5:30 “For we are members of His body of His flesh and of His bones”.

All these have come to pass because of what Jesus came to do. He is the only way to God.

   CONFESSION

Religion is a man seeking God by finding ways to please Him. Christianity brings men into oneness with God who lives in us and works through us. His laws are fulfilled in me, so it is my nature to live to please Him.

THOUGHT: IÑ CHRIST, THE WAYS OF GOD ARE FULFILLED IN US

FURTHER STUDIES.

Philippians 2:13 “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”

Romans 8:3-4 ” For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit”.

OUR ONENESS WITH JESUS 2

KEY SCRIPTURE: Acts 9:5 KJV “And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.”

In our last study, we realised from the above key scripture that the Christian is mysteriously united to our Lord Jesus Christ.  Jesus stated clearly that Paul was attacking Him, although practically he was persecuting the Christians. Every child of God needs to get the full implication of that revelation. Galatians 3:27 states it like this Gal 3:27 KJV “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”. The day you accepted the Lordship of Jesus over your life and believed that God raised Him, from the grave after His death, you were baptised or immersed into Christ. Rom 6:3. The scripture in Gal 3:27 says through that act you have put on Christ like a man wears a garment.

On the flip side, we have not only put Him on, He is also living in us. Col 1:27 KJV “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:” Now He is in us and He is all around us or we are in Him. What does God seek to achieve by this? He seeks a complete takeover of our lives by Jesus. We, therefore, throw away our consciousness of our weak, defeated, sinful self to assume the superior, victorious, all-conquering Christ personality as the very one functioning on this earth in our name. From this position we are not the weak ones, always praying to be strong, we are strong in Him, and should not accept any thoughts of weakness. Remember the scripture advised us to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.  The power of His might is the fulness of His power, including the totality of angels at our disposal. We should not in one moment feel vulnerable under the threat of Satan’s power.

The acknowledgment of our oneness with Jesus also means we stand in the place of authority, victory, and security of Jesus. The scripture uses the term, COMPLETE in Him, who is the Head of all principality and power.  This is the reason when the bible spoke of our wrestle against supernatural forces of evil, the Scripture kept using the word STAND. Our position is the very state of our Lord Jesus. He is never down. We are also never down. No matter what seems to be going on physically, never think you are being defeated. Our oneness with Jesus makes us partake of His victory.

There is this term that most Christians use quite often. The word breakthrough. To breakthrough suggests you were down, defeated, and through some means you have broken free from that state, or limiting position. In the natural that is what it seems. This word is a little bit problematic because it places the Christian in the mental frame that is not true of who He is and gives Satan, or his devils an advantage over Him. Our master Jesus broke through when he rose from the grave. Rom 6:9 KJV “Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him”. If we are one with Him, then we broke through with Him. If this does not show in the physical, you do not accept a defeated mentality trying to succeed, but maintain your victory in Christ mentality and rather, RESIST the enemy who seeks to get you defeated. WE FIGHT FROM VICTORY TO VICTORY; NOT DEFEAT TO VICTORY.

Before the contest, we are already victorious.

CONFESSION

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for your victory over death, Satan, sin, and sicknesses. I am one with you and so I am victorious over death, sin, sicknesses, and Satan, Hallelujah. No matter what I face, or see in the natural I am never defeated. None of these things will ever reign over me. It is Jesus ruling over me. He is the Lord of my life, never the devil or anything of his. AMEN

Eph 6:13 KJV “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”

ONENESS WITH JESUS.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Acts 9:5 KJV “And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.”

Apostle Paul who was formally Saul of Tarsus had received an authoritative note from the high priest, to arrest the Christians and persecute them. The Lord met Him on his way to Damascus. The Lord answered a question Paul asked as follows, Acts 9:5 KJV And he said, Who art thou, Lord? “And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” Paul wanted to know the one who had intercepted him. Our Lord Jesus has been similarly encountering many, in our present moments. If you do not know Him as Lord, please do not wait further, turn your life over to Him, today Jesus is still saving lives.

In the Lord’s answer to Paul, He revealed something very remarkable. He said, to him,” I am Jesus whom you are persecuting”. Paul was attacking the Christians, yet, the master said, he was the one they were persecuting. This reveals that we are one with Jesus.

The Christian is not just a follower of Jesus but mysteriously united with Him.

Galatians 2:20 states, we have been crucified with Jesus, yet we live, but not us. The life we are living in the flesh, we live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved us and gave Himself for us. He is living in us and functioning through us. We have His perfect abilities right within us. May the eyes of all Christians be opened to understand that, we are to carry out the very things He would have done if He was around.

Dear child of God, do everything with the knowledge that, it is Christ Himself actively doing that thing, or saying those words through you. In light of this, give no place to any word about your neighbour that would break him or her down. Rather give out words that would build up. Make love for all, your hallmarks.  Believe you are a storehouse of authority and power. Take your place, and act for Jesus. Touch the sick as He would do, and they would be healed. Take authority over demonic situations like Jesus would do, and the devils would flee. He is in you to continue with His works, just as when He was on earth.

CONFESSION

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for choosing to be one with us. Thank for you your presence in us. Your presence in me overcomes all the works of the evil one. There is no task, that is too great for me to do. I have your love at work in me. Thank you, Lord, for choosing to be one with me.

A MAN SENT FROM GOD

KEY SCRIPTURE Joh 1:6 KJV “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.”

When John the Baptist, was asked by the priests, the Jewish leaders sent to enquire of who he was, he said he was the voice of one crying in the wilderness; make a straight path for the Lord (John 1:23). In effect he admitted that, he had been sent on an assignment. Men are always God’s means of achieving His purposes on earth.

Every man saved by the blood of Jesus is also a man or woman sent from God.

You have a mandate to execute a particular task. We are all generally commissioned to go and make disciples of all nations. (Matt 28:19 &20)

The sad truth is that many Christians have a misunderstanding of the task given to us. The church to some is a place of entertainment, where they go to listen to music and dance. Others consider the church as a place with a superman in charge, whose prayers are very powerful to help them come out of their problems. They do not consider or accept that they are people sent from God to save men.

Dear brother or sister you have been sent from God. Don’t lose sight of your task. You would one day be required to give an account of what you did about what God asked you to do. (2 Corinth 5:10)

A story making runs on social media, is about a young boy who was SENT by his father to go, and buy some food from a restaurant for Him. This boy bought the food alright, but when returning home, he came across some boys playing football. His friends asked him to join to play the game. Without hesitating he left the food with some boys and joined to play the game. He played very well and was hailed by all who watched the game. The game ended only to find out that his father’s food had been eaten. He was faced with the real challenge of going back home to face the anger and disappointment of his father. He cried and dreaded going home. Dear one, one day the game that has taken you from your assignment that God gave you, would be over, and you would go home to meet your father, who SENT you. Would you joyfully meet your father or you would be filled with fear.?

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 14:24-25 (KJV).  “But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.”

When the disciples of the Lord were sailing to their destination, the Bible said the waves were against them and they were tossed by the winds. They were in a very critical state. The irony of this case is that it was the Lord who asked them to go on the ship. In certain life challenges, one may be in the will of God, doing what the word says, yet adversity may arise. It may be a life-threatening situation, yet never despair. This condition was a satanic work that came to challenge the word the Lord gave to them. Amid all the troubles they were going through the Lord had seen it and decided to come to them and calm down that situation for them. The Lord came to them at the fourth watch. This was about 3 am. He will come irrespective of the moment.

The Lord came to them walking on the water, the very problem that was threatening their lives. Why didn’t the Lord pray for them at His moment of prayer, but had to come personally? He walked on the water to them because He was demonstrating the following points to them.

1.He would never leave them and us to face any crisis alone. He would always be present to see us through Heb 13:5.

2.He demonstrated that He would always watch over His promise to perform it. Jer 1:12 NHEB “Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen well; for I watch over my word to perform it.” The Lord asked them to go on a ship and had to make sure they got to the end of their journey.

3.He also showed that he was a master over every problem, as he walked over the water, which was their problem at that moment.

What must we do in moments of trial?

1. To be rest assured of His presence with you always. Matt 28:20

2. Never be worried about any crises you may be going through. Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

3. Ask him for answers or speak to the situation to submit to you in Jesus’ name and thank him for answering you. Mark 11:23.

CONFESSION

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for your ever-abiding presence. Thank you, Lord, that, because you are in me, I overcome every challenge.

THE LORD’S ASSURANCE

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:20 KJV “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

The Lord never commissions without committing Himself to the one He has sent.

In Mark 16:20 the scripture reads ” And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.” This account is fully expressed in the Acts of the APOSTLES. The Lord never forsook them. He says the same word of assurance to us, and He does the same way of approving their acts of obedience. The Lord is faithful and will always honour His word.  Heb 13:5 KJV “Let your conversation be without covetousness, and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

The scripture quoted above has an emphasis on the never. It reads, not at all or no never, no never. This is a very strong assurance of His commitment to be by us always. He even adds a time duration. He says until the end of the age. The implication of this is that if you are to speak or do anything on His behalf, and in His name, you should be assured of His full backing. This assurance should help the church act more in faith without any fear whatsoever, knowing He would not dishonour His own word. If you have to pray for a terribly sick condition, give no place to fear or wonder about what may happen. Always remember this slogan. WHEN THE LORD COMMISSIONS, HE COMMITS HIMSELF.

This thought brings us to the point of never asking the Lord to be with you. Such a prayer shows a high level of ignorance or unbelief. May we copy the Lord’s example in John 16:32. He said, His disciples will scatter and leave Him, yet He was never alone, because the Father was ever with Him.

How can one maintain a consciousness of the Lord’s presence? You can do it by practicing the Lord’s presence always. You always create a mental picture of His presence with you. You may start this in your quiet time and your times of meditation. You then do it wherever you are. This is one of the greatest assets you can build into your consciousness.

CONFESSION

Jesus is with me always. I am one with His Spirit and so He lives within my being. He eats with Him and meets every challenge with me. I am never alone. He always honours my actions in His name.

JESUS IS AFFECTED BY WHAT AFFECTS US.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Mat 10:40 KJV He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

Our key scripture states that whosoever receives any of the Lord’s children receives Him.  This truth has two aspects of benefits to it. Those who would be positively affected, as well as those who would be negatively affected by it. It also reveals the strong ties we have with the Lord. The Lord said in the proceeding verse that anyone who receives a Christian receives the Lord himself, and subsequently receives the Father also. This implies every one of us must endeavour to give the best treatment to any child of God we encounter. It is also applicable to all persons who may not be Christians, for everyone is made in the image of God. The Lord added that there is a big reward for any brother or sister who kindly attends to any child of God. Matt 10:42 KJV “And whosoever shall give unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.” The Lord taught us that whenever we are kind to anyone because he is a disciple or a child of God, we will be rewarded for it.

Some brethren treat their house helps and boys, like trash. This is very dangerous to you. It is the Lord you are mishandling that way. Some people speak so much evil against servants of God without knowing much about them. Some Christians would never give any help of any kind to those who need it. Now just consider this, if being kind to persons because they are disciples, brings so many rewards, then what would happen to those who are terrible to the children of God?

The child of God is a member of the body of Christ and so failure to discern that this person is the body of Christ brings unnecessary challenges to you. 1 Corinth 11:29, says.” For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.” To discern means to distinguish, to set apart, or to be aware. To treat a fellow Christian with preference and dignity. is a rare opportunity for you. The scripture taught that those who fail to discern the body of Christ, are sick, and weak and some even die because they failed to discern the body of Christ, of which that brother or sister you may be mishandling is part of (1 Corinth 11:30).

The married home is a place where many Christians are seriously failing in these matters. Each party may carry a grudge because of an OFFENCE. They may insult, beat up their partner, or deny them certain courtesies because they feel hurt.  The Lord said if you do it to one of the least of my brethren, you have done it to me. May we always treat all persons with dignity and respect?

CONFESSION

God’s children are all very special to Him. I attend to everyone with love and respect, knowing that they are part of the body of Christ.

JESUS LEADS US

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 10:4 KJV” And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.”

Our key scripture shows us how we walk with the master. He leads as we follow. He does not stay behind pushing us to move on as the Fulani herdsmen do. Our Lord leads us with His word. Psalms 23:3 KJV” He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” No child of God ought to be in the dark concerning the ways of God. He never leads us into error, failure, or destruction. It may seem we are entering into danger or trouble, yet so long as He is leading, then it would be alright in the long run He led the whole congregation of Israel’s population to the Red Sea. This appeared like a mistake, yet it was their deliverance.

Someone said God would lead you around but will lead you right. Our part is to locate where He is going or walking and follow suit. The scripture says He goes before us. This means no matter how fearful a condition or situation may appear; our Lord Jesus is the one confronting the thing. Psalms 114:3 KJV “The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.” The Red Sea was divided because it saw the Lord who was leading them. So long as His word tells us to follow or go forward, there should be no turning back. We are rather defeated when we turn back. The scripture says the Lord never leaves us, even when there seems to be no victory in sight. Isaiah 43:2 KJV” When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”

Dear child of God, may you resolve to keep moving forward in line with the Lord’s promise. If He gave His word, then the word cannot fail because He is with you. Isaiah 43:2 says in the water He is with us, the rivers would not overwhelm us, neither would He leave us when passing through the fire. The fire would never consume you. Dear one, just keep going forward. In moments of trial, let the following be your words” The Lord is with me, for He is leading me with His word. So long as I have His word, He is with me, and victory is already mine in Jesus’ name. Glory be to God.”

CONFESSION

My Lord Jesus leads me in His path of righteousness. I am not moved by what I see. I only believe and so that seemingly impossible situation is turned into a miracle for me.

THOUGHT: KEEP THE WORD IN TIMES OF TRIALS, AND THAT GUARANTEES HIS PRESENCE WITH YOU.
