THE ERROR OF WORRYING ABOUT THE FUTURE

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 6:34
“So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble.”

Our master Jesus states categorically that we should not worry at all about tomorrow or the future. In that passage, he talked about the birds of the air which does not sow and are gathered into harvest, yet our heavenly father perfectly provides for them. He asks, Are we not much better or more important to God than they? There is a worry chart from an unknown source, yet observing it makes a lot of sense. The following is the chart.

1 . Things that men worry but will never happen …..40%

  1. Things that can’t be changed by all the worry in the world….35%
  2. Things worried about, but may turn out better than expected……15%
  3. Pretty useless worries……8%
  4. Legitimate worries…..2%

Total …………100%

Let’s explain the various groupings, giving examples. The first on the chart are matters that people worry about but would never happen, which are a whopping 40 per cent. These are things like worrying about an anticipated disease that does not exist. People worry about armed robbers who may attack their property at night. These are matters that may not happen at all, yet they are what takes a bigger aspect of what people worry most.

The chart also talked about issues that cannot be changed by all the worry in the world, and this is 35 per cent. These are those who may worry, for example, about the parents who gave birth to them. This is an issue that one cannot change in any way. Another example is an event that happened many years ago that concerns you. It has already passed in the future, and you can’t go back into history and correct it.

The third issue on the chart is those who worry about matters that eventually change with time or by observing certain restorative practices. This is 15 per cent. This includes certain sicknesses or conditions that eventually improve.

There are also the types of worries that are simply useless. This also makes up 8 per cent. It is very useless when one worries over the success of another individual. It is very useless if you get depressed about your soccer club that lost its game. Sadly, we have people falling into such a condition.

There are those who have legitimate issues that may call for real concern. An example may be one who has lost a very important amount. This is a real loss that may call for concern because of what the money was going to be used for.

The scriptures counsel us not to be worried at all about anything, no matter how real or legitimate it may be. God still works miracles. His word is the ruling principle of the universe. The moment one sets up their heart and mind to do what God says, as well as believing God’s promises, the power of God, whether through God’s angels or through the power of the Holy Spirit, will get into motion to honour the faith of that individual. Mark 9:23
And Jesus said, [You say to Me], If You can do anything? [Why,] all things can be (are possible) to him who believes!

Dear one, we realise that most worries about the future that most people burden themselves with are simply very much avoidable. The reason why a number of people get into these matters is a lack of knowledge of God and His word. If we were to give a great chunk of our time to God’s word as well as listening to living testimonies of people who overcame difficult situations by faith, we would be very much encouraged to stick to God and come out victorious.

( Pls note there is a big difference between worrying and thinking to plan for a good outcome of the event. To think and resolve issues is the proper way God expects us to relate to matters that come our way.

THOUGHT: GOD’S COUNSEL NEVER TO BE WORRIED IS STILL VALID AND THE BEST.

Turn problems into an opportunity to glorify God.

KEY. SCRIPTURE: John 9:3 KJV “Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him”.

When Jesus’ disciples asked about who sinned that the man was born blind, they were expressing an attitude of people who don’t easily fit into God’s concept of those He would want to work with. They were seeing problems, the cause and effect of the cause. They focused on man and the failure in him. The Lord showed them how they must see issues of life from God’s perspective. In every situation, no matter how bad it may appear, God seeks to receive glory out of it. The man God will use in such moments is able to see how God would be glorified rather than looking at the weaknesses of men and their failures. This virtue of looking beyond human shortcomings and weakness to see the power of God coming into the situation is called FAITH.

When David got to the arena of battle, between Israel and the Philistines, he did not see danger and failure in sight. He rather saw a big opportunity to bring glory to God. 1 Samuel 17. Every other soldier was paralysed with fear. 1Samuel 17:11 KJV” When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid”. In the midst of apparent danger, David said, he would go and fight him and take away the reproach against God and His people.

When Daniel was threatened with being thrown into the lion’s den, he was not moved or worried; rather, his concern was to bring glory to God. God is ever ready for any man who will take such a stance for Him.

Do you want to be a candidate for God’s glory, then stop seeing difficulties and dreadful situations? Start celebrating the glory of God, which is about to be seen.

Are you in a situation that is causing you to sing the praises of the devil? Complaining, worrying and confessing any defeatist talk is a way of praising the devil. Satan should never be given any grounds to rejoice over our lack of faith in our Father. Use most of your time to build your confidence in God by receiving His word (Rom 10:17). Take steps to trust in him by putting His word into action. David put his faith into action by killing the lion and the bear, and when a bigger opportunity came, he was never taken aback.

CONFESSION

To every dark situation, there is a brighter side, ready to be revealed. By faith, I always see that brighter side. This glorifies God, and He stretches forth His hand to reveal His glory and power. The darkness is always rendered only as a mirage.

Do not live for yourself.

KEY SCRIPTURE:2Co 5:15 KJV” And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.”

Truth always liberates, while lies and deception enslave. The Israelites who left Egypt for the promised land kept murmuring and complaining till all those who left Egypt died on the way. Just consider one of their complaints. Num 11:5 KJV “We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic: But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.”These people complained about the lack of cucumber, melons, garlic and others that they were not getting and rejected the heavenly meal, the manna. Why did they attack God that way? They did not understand that they were living for the Lord, and so they were His responsibility. They did not have to worry about anything. All they needed to do was to keep thanking God for whatever He did for them, and to also thank Him for those things that He was yet to do. They had seen unimaginable miracles and great signs and wonders of God’s power, yet they kept complaining and murmuring. Their focus was continually on themselves, not on God, who had decided to bring them to the promised land.

Our key scripture states clearly that since Jesus died for us, we must no longer live for ourselves. Please note that self-centeredness is the mother of all sorrows. It is a sign of great immaturity to be occupied with yourself. When the scriptures talk about Jesus dying for us, it means we died with him, and the life that we now have is the resurrected Christ alive in us. ( Gal 2:20)As Christians, when we make reference to ourselves, we mean the resurrected Christ in us, which Second Corinthians 5:17 calls the new creation. Our old self is no more. Now, the life of Jesus alive in us has conquered the world. J(ohn 16:33). This life has conquered death and so has truly conquered whatever challenge that we may face.
We no longer have any interest of our own. We are Christ’s representatives, and we execute His agenda. We have nothing to be ashamed of or glory about. We seek His glory. Jesus can not fail us; He cannot suffer shame in any way.

When David encountered Goliath, he said The battle is the Lord’s. He did not consider any thoughts of defeat. He was just a representative for the Lord. His portion was to do everything in the name of the Lord and see Him defeat the enemy. To live free of worries, we must stop living for ourselves and live for the Lord. Jesus said if you try to save your life you would lose it, but if you lose your life for Him you would save it ( John 12:25). The man who worries is attempting to save his life, while the one who places his trust in Him has ceased attempting to save himself but allowed the Lord to take over his life. This is the simple truth about walking and relating with Jesus

Be rooted in the knowledge of God’s faithfulness

KEY SCRIPTURE: Rev 19:11 KJV And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

In one of our studies about living a life of peace instead of worrying and anxiety, we said we’ve got to acknowledge God’s faithfulness. Once again, I wish to emphasise the importance of being rooted in knowing God’s faithfulness so you would stand firmly to possess every blessing of God.

God’s faithfulness should dominate the mind and the meditation of the people of God. Every attack, trial, or challenge the devil throws at the believer is to raise a barrier against the concept we have about the faithfulness of God. The Christian’s resilience against evil depends on how he or she is grounded or rooted in the concept of God’s faithfulness. Daniel faced the threat of being consumed by the ferocious lions because he had fully settled in his heart that God was faithful to His word. David accepted the challenge against Goliath because he was fully convinced of God’s faithfulness. God had promised in Joshua 1:5 that “There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” This promise from the mouth of the faithful becomes a solid ground to enter into any contest or battle.

In the new covenant, God affirms His FAITHFULNESS to us. He says,” Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19. Scripture abounds in illustrations of God’s faithfulness. He said, ” While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. Gen 8:22. Every year is a fresh witness to God fulfilling this promise. In Gen 15, the Lord declared to Abraham, Thy seed shall be strangers in a land that is not theirs and shall serve them…But in the fourth generation, they shall come hider again. Although time passed, and centuries rolled away, God did not forget His promise but brought it to pass. In Exodus 12:41, “And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.” This prophecy came to pass in the very last word.

God is true, and His word is sure. He remains faithful in all His dealings with His people. No one ever trusted the Lord in vain. He says whosoever believes in Him will not be put to shame, Rom 10:11. Once again, let every child of God know that faithfulness is an essential part of His divine character. Whenever you are tempted to doubt His faithfulness, please know that it is an attack on your very foundation of relating to God. Refuse every thought that suggests anything against God’s faithfulness. Declare it audibly that God is faithful.

CONFESSION

Father, you are faithful. This I know and never will allow any contrary suggestion against this knowledge. Indeed, acknowledging your faithfulness is my liberty from the lies of the enemy. I am ever confident of victory, always because I know you are very faithful.

THOUGHT: YOU WOULD EVER REMAIN VICTORIOUS IF YOU STICK TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD’S FAITHFULNESS.

Heb 10:35 KJV” Cast not away, therefore, your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward.”

Isaiah 25:1 KJV O LORD, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.

Cast your cares once and for all on the Lord.

KEY SCRIPTURE:1 Peter 5:7
“Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully. [Ps. 55:22.]

The amplified bible explains further that in casting our burdens unto the Lord, we must do it once and for all. Our Father delights to have His children express total confidence in Him. He does not want us to give our concerns to Him for a few hours, days or months and then come back. This pattern is the habit of some. When they give their concerns to the Lord, they wait for some time, and when nothing seems to change, they go back and start carrying the challenges again. One of the greatest signs of maturity is the ability to trust the Lord. James 1:2-4 says we must count it all joy when we fall into diverse temptations, knowing that the trying of your faith works patience. He adds that we should let patience have its perfect work so that we may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. Perfection, according to Apostle James, is when one has grown to trust the Lord to the point that he or she is able to hold on to the Lord even when it seems to be delayed.

God loves us all dearly. He is the all-wise God. If a child of God grows to lean fully on the Lord, then he has really come of age and is ready to take care of lots of responsibilities. Please note that our grand enemy, Satan and his demons, would not allow you to attain that level. Anyone who has learnt to trust God with all concerns becomes an automatic master of the devil. The strength of Satan is when he succeeds in directing the child of God to do his bidding. Satan is not that powerful when the child of God does not yield to his promptings. If a child of God maintains faith and confidence in God, he can dominate the devil and his demons on any day.

In light of this, learn to cast your burdens and concerns once and for all on the Lord. How can one resist the temptation not to go back to take over the cares again and again? You can do this by talking back to the suggestions of the devil as they land in your mind. Whenever he comes telling you that things are getting worse, just speak back and quote a scripture like Rom 10:11Romans 10:11
“The Scripture says, No man who believes in Him [who adheres to, relies on, and trusts in Him] will [ever] be put to shame or be disappointed. [Ps. 34:22; Isa. 28:16; 49:23; Jer. 17:7.Please take some time to go over the cross references from this verse stated. Decide that you will stick to the Lord in all these. These demons would be suggesting that matters would get worse. Please speak back quickly, telling him that nothing in God’s hands can go bad. Isa 43:2 KJV When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

BEWARE OF PRIDE

KEY SCRIPTURE:1Pe 5:5 KJV “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”

Pride is a great threat to your ability to receive anything from the Lord. The Lord actually opposes the proud, for the proud is not subject to the way of God. Pride would not allow any individual to release his burdens unto the Lord. Let’s consider how the amplified bible amplifies 1 Peter 5:5-7
1 Peter 5
…….. Clothe (apron) yourselves, all of you, with humility [as the garb of a servant, so that its covering cannot possibly be stripped from you, with freedom from pride and arrogance] toward one another. For God sets Himself against the proud (the insolent, the overbearing, the disdainful, the presumptuous, the boastful)–[and He opposes, frustrates, and defeats them], but gives grace (favour, blessing) to the humble.
Therefore humble yourselves [demote, lower yourselves in your own estimation] under the mighty hand of God, that in due time He may exalt you.” It is the man who has humbled himself who would be ready to leave his burdens at God’s feet

The above passage from the amplified bible tells us to clothe ourselves with humility so that after we have cast our burdens on the Lord, pride and arrogance do not set in to make us insubordinate to the will of God. Please note that God sets Himself against the proud. How does God set Himself against the proud? It says He opposes them, frustrates or defeats them. That is, He takes away from you every good ability to make you victorious. Please note that every good thing we have is never our creation but an act of God’s grace. When one acts in pride, they loses God’s grace and so forfeit every provision of grace. God rather gives more grace to the humble. Clothe yourself tightly with humility.

Why are some people proud? There are even certain individuals who used to be very humble before God, yet when they seemed to have things going their way, they soon became hasty to the Lord. Pride may set in because men stop focusing on the Lord and start focusing on themselves. Now, when an individual fails to maintain his dedication to Gid’s word and a corresponding commitment to doing what the word says, he would soon lose that reverential fear of God. In 2nd Chronicles 16, King Asa, who began as a humble man, fully submissive to the Lord, became so proud that he stopped trusting God and trusted men instead. He started even attacking and tormenting the priest who pleaded with him not to dishonour God. At the end he died as a result of God’s judgement on him.

THOUGHT: PRIDE DOES NOT ONLY ROB YOU OF GRACE. IT SETS GOD AGAINST YOU.

True faith has no place for worry.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Mat 6:26 KJV “Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?”

A life filled with Worry, anxiety and fear can seriously make living very unbearable. Living like this can make you a shadow of yourselves. Such a person’s mind is constantly bombarded with clueless matters. God’s word is basically information about God’s mind, program or instructions for man’s liberty from whatever makes life miserable. It is called the perfect law of liberty. This is the reason any man looking for answers for hard, breakable nuts in this life must diligently search for the truth and counsel to learn how to free himself. The Lord Jesus said, Joh 16:33 KJV “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

He overcame the problems and tribulations of this life by His walk of faith. He lived by the highest principles of faith. True faith does not live in the anticipation of the answer but rather lives in the reality of the answer, although physically the answer may not be readily available. The Lord said to Thomas when he expressed total disbelief in the rest of the apostles’ testimony of Jesus’ resurrection and his appearance among them. John 20:29
“Jesus said to him, Because you have seen Me, Thomas, do you now believe (trust, have faith)? Blessed and happy and to be envied are those who have never seen Me and yet have believed and adhered to and trusted and relied on Me.” The Lord was teaching him His way of life. He does not need to see the answer. He believes whatever the father has said
At the tomb of Lazarus, He prayed this way, Thank you, Father, that you always hear me. Before He prayed, He had fully acknowledged that He had been answered.

Everyone practising true faith rejoices in the answer, because faith takes hold of the answer before it materialises. Fear or worry is an expression of one who does not have the answer. They are rather searching for the answer. This places the answer in the future. The man, hoping to get some money to settle his already due house rent, acts in faith by thanking God for the money. He rather worships the Lord and blesses his name for providing the rent. Such a man would not be caught up in worries. The sick man stands on the scriptures by whose stripes you were healed. He likewise rejoices in his healing. God would surely honour their faith with answers

THOUGHT: FAITH LIVES IN THE ANSWER

Appreciate God’s faithfulness

KEY SCRIPTURE:
Lam 3:22-23 KJV “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

Unfaithfulness is one of the most outstanding sins of these evil days. In the business world, a man’s word does not carry any weight since it is dishonoured with ease. In the social world, marital infidelity abounds on every hand, and the sacred bonds of marriage are broken with little regard, as if discarding an old garment. Men tend to become so unfaithful even to their vows to do certain things for themselves, to the point that they do not believe their own words. Despite the extreme unfaithfulness amongst most men, it is refreshing to learn and to know about the faithfulness of the Lord at all times and under all conditions. An appreciation of God’s faithfulness is a firm rock to stand on to keep you from every fear or worry.

This quality of faithfulness is essential to His being. Without it, He would not be God. For God to be unfaithful is for Him to act against His nature, which is impossible.2 Timothy 2:13 assures us that God remains faithful and can’t deny himself. 2Ti 2:13 KJV” If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” There is no need to be anxious about whatever challenge you may be having. Focus on His faithfulness and see your solution in your hands. Faithfulness is one of the glorious perfections of His being. Psalms 89:8 KJV” O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? Or to thy faithfulness round about thee?” When God should take on flesh, the following was said about Him. Isaiah 11:5 KJV “And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.”

Everything about God is vast and incomparable. God never forgets, never fails, never falters, never forfeits His word. For every declaration, promise, and prophecy, the Lord has stood firmly by every engagement of covenant, He would make good, for ” God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? “This should make you exclaim,’ It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23.

Dear child of God, meditate on God’s faithfulness till your heart can sing in joy at the face of every storm that whatever God has promised is already done.

CONFESSIONS

My God is the faithful God. He can not deny Himself, for He can’t lie since He does not change—every promise He makes remains, yes, and Amen in Christ Jesus. I am ever at rest in Him despite what I see or feel. What he has said will prevail.

Acknowledging God’s love

KEY SCRIPTURE: Romans 8:32
“He who did not withhold or spare [even] His own Son but gave Him up for us all, will He not also with Him freely and graciously give us all [other] things?”

One of the biggest agendas of the enemy of the souls of men is to paint a wrong picture about the nature of God. Many who go into difficulties turn to ask why God is not getting them out of the problem. Some even get so bitter against God. Anyone who falls into such a trap has freely given himself over to Satan. God has demonstrated throughout the scriptures that His love for men is irrevocable. The scriptures teach that while we were yet sinners or rebellious against God, Christ died for us. Rom 5:8.it said for a righteous man, one may want to die but not a sinner, yet our Lord Jesus took on our sins, and as a result was separated from the Father for the first time. That made Him cry, saying, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me. It was love that made Him hang on that old rugged cross.

We have to acknowledge this great love anytime we are faced with situations that weigh heavily on us. We need to acknowledge the unconditional love the Father has shown for us. Now the truth is, if He did not spare Him but gave Him up to die for us, is there anything that He would deny us? Jas 1:17 KJV Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. The immediate verse teaches us that there is no shadow of turning with God, or better still, there is no shifting shadows with Him. This means He is constant and will never fail us. Let the knowledge of His unconditional love drive away from our hearts and minds every fear or worry.

Such love must cause us to sing joyfully, knowing without a shadow of doubt that He cannot fail us. The truth about God’s provision is that He has already provided everything we would ever need in Christ Jesus. He said all His promises are yes and Amen in Christ Jesus. In Jesus, everything is answered.2nd Corinthians 1:20. He has also said that He who knows to do good and fails to do it, to him, it is sin. James 4:17.So long as you place your confidence in Him, then He can not fail or put you to shame. Failure to do what He has promised is inconsistent with His word and nature. For He has said whosoever that put his trust in Him, will not be disappointed( Rom 10:11). This is the reason you must throw away every worry, fear, or doubt. God’s love makes it certain that your answer can not be denied. Consider it done, and start jubilation about your answer.

KNOW THE LORD

KEY SCRIPTURE:2 Timothy 1:12
“And this is why I am suffering as I do. Still I am not ashamed, for I know (perceive, have knowledge of, and am acquainted with) Him Whom I have believed (adhered to and trusted in and relied on), and I am [positively] persuaded that He is able to guard and keep that which has been entrusted to me and which I have committed [to Him] until that day.”

Apostle Paul was an exceptional servant of God who led such an amazing life unto the Lord. Paul wrote the letter of Philippians from a prison in Rome. Paul was awaiting execution, yet he wrote to the brethren in Philippians to rejoice always. He admonished them never to be anxious about anything, but in all situations with prayer and supplication, they should make their request known to God. What made him live such a life of joy and peace, although he was constantly attacked and death threatened? He said in our key scripture that he knows the Lord. How did apostle Paul come to such a close knowledge and acquaintance with the Lord? Please note that your joy in challenging times depends on how much you know the Lord.

Please, I pray that your spirit shall be opened to the following truths. God cannot be known by reason or mental analysis 1Co 1:21 KJV” For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” This verse shows us that God has designed it such that no man by natural reasoning can know God. The second part of the verse shows us God’s way of knowing Him. That is to believe what He has said about Himself in the bible. We know Him by deciding to wholeheartedly accept what is said about Him. Please note that there are unseen personalities which keep speaking all kinds of false things about God to the minds of people. The man who has not settled in his heart to accept and believe the revelations of God in the scriptures would be constantly thrown into a state of doubt through the opposing arguments against the knowledge of God.

Dear one, let your mind accept all that the bible reveals about God, and give no thought to any arguments against the scriptures. It is in acting boldly on the truths of scripture that you experience the power and miracles of God. Even in your encounters with miracles, the enemy would not stop telling you all forms of lies. Those who have decided to fully hold to what the bible says about God maintain a joyful heart and continually experience God’s miracle power. Many people think they have weak faith and some claim they do not know the Lord. Please know that we are dealing with a very cunning devil who fills your mind with contrary or doubtful thoughts about God. He makes those thoughts appear like your own thinking or consciousness. Please any doubts that rise in your mind does not proceed from your mind, they are demonic suggesting aimed at weakening your faith or making you accept that you do not know God very well, and so you can not stand boldly for Him.

THOUGHT: THOSE WHO CLAIM TO KNOW GOD HAVE BELIEVED ALL THAT SCRIPTURE HAS REVEALED ABOUT HIM.
