Be an example in faith.

KEY SCRIPTURE:1Ti 4:12 KJV” Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

We now consider the instruction that the pastor must be an example in faith. Faith is one of  the fundamental doctrines of our life in Christ ( Heb 6:1-2), yet without it no man can please the Lord Heb 11:6 .That means it is the only means to walk with God and to obtain anything from the Lord. On the flip side, it is faith that acts as a defensive weapon to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

The pastor should be an example of great faith. Most congregational members have not encountered God in their personal walk. The pastor remains the means of bringing the reality of God to the people. His unwavering faith and the tangible proofs that it brings about give the congregation  an example to follow. It is extremely important that the pastor be a man of faith.

True faith begins with a knowledge of God. Knowing God is not by any sensational event, but a decision to accept the revelation of Himself to us. The people of Israel during Moses’ day had so many spectacular events  , yet they never knew  God because they did not decide to accept the revelation of Himself. When one has taken this first step  of knowing God, then he or she begins to receive the truths of scripture, which builds stronger faith.

The pastor must continuously put his faith into action. In this way, he grows strong faith over time. When a man keeps exercising his muscles ,it would surely grow stronger and bigger. The pastor has a great responsibility because most of the congregation would need his example to keep going.

In Heb 13:7;8  it reads” Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.  Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” The above verses say it all. It tells the fellow Christians to follow the faith of their leaders or pastors, considering the outcome or the great victories that show in their experiences. The scripture added that the Lord Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. If it went very well with the pastor, then that same Lord would never fail those who follow the pastor’s example of faith.

Dear pastor, you have a great responsibility in faith, so dare to trust the Lord with your life, and our master Jesus would never ever fail you. God assures us in Ps 119:89 ,90  that forever o Lord thy word is settled in heaven, and thy faithfulness is unto ALL GENERATIONS.” Dear Pastor, place your life in the arms of Jesus, trusting Him absolutely, for He can not fail you. The pastor’s position as a leader demands that he become an example of great faith. Our master Jesus raised people of great faith because they saw that example in Him. It was not surprising for Peter to heal people with his shadow. He saw the master do it, and it was just normal for him to do so

The main challenge for certain pastors not exercising great faith is fear. Fear is a spirit that robs you of faith.

Refuse to give it a place, for it is a lie of the devil.

Jesus is all-powerful, all-loving, and can not fail you.

An example in Spirit

KEY SCRIPTURE:1Ti 4:12 KJV” Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

We continue with our discussion on  Paul’s pastoral letter to Pastor Timothy. This time, we  consider the counsel Paul gave him to be an example in the Spirit. The life of the Christian is basically to be led by the Spirit of God. Rom 8:14 KJV “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

The bible says  the Christian is a man or woman of the Spirit. Rom 8:9 KJV “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now, if any man has not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

When the Lord said if any man would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. Matt 16:24. This statement basically means give yourself over to the spirit. We are invisible to the devil and his demons when the spirit takes over our lives.

Every pastor must be a man or woman of the spirit. This means he is controlled by the word. Now the word transports us to partake of the divine nature ( 2 Peter 1:4).At this level  he functions beyond normal human ability. This pastor functioning as a divine being can tell a number of invalids who are almost dead that they are cleansed and should arise and go.These people would walk away healed.Such a man is operating from the Spirit via the transformation ability of the word. Our Lord Jesus walked on water  by the ability of the spirit.

I taught these truths to one of my young pastors some years ago. At that time, this young man was a driver by profession. He took his car to the mechanic for repairs. At the fitting shop, the   acid in the car battery somehow splashed onto his face and his dress. Surprisingly, nothing happened to his face. His  shirt was rather corroded by the acid. He brought the shirt to me as evidence of what occurred. This was a clear demonstration of partaking in the spiritual nature as a result of receiving the promises of scripture.

The Christian and, for that matter, the pastor must live in the spirit. He is transformed or metamorphosed into what the word says through the renewing of his mind. Rom 12:2. I wish to sound a word of caution to those who teach that  there are certain leaves that can cause one to function in the spirit and even see things in the spirit. These things are occult in nature( Occult means hidden , strange or magical source of power). No pastor should deal in these things . The word of God is spirit and transports us into the spirit realm as we meditate and practise what it says.

THOUGHT: THE SPIRIT REALM IS VERY REAL. IT IS ACCESSED BY THE WORD OF GOD.

Should Christmas be celebrated

KEY SCRIPTURE:Col 2:16 KJV” Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:”

The first man, Adam, led the human race into gross darkness. There was absolutely no hope, for death had taken its toll on all humanity, yet in the fullness of time, light came. Isa 9:2 KJV” The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shone.” This verse was the state and condition of all humanity. Should the light that brought salvation not be celebrated? I think this light that brought a solution to our clueless state ought to be celebrated.

Christmas speaks of how the solution to man’s desperate condition was initiated through the invasion by the monarch of the universe into the world of humanity. Joh 1:14 KJV” And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” He came into our world and demonstrated how men could live in close fellowship with God  , and also how men could live in dominion over Satan and his devils. The Lord Jesus, as a Son of man, was a true representation of every man, revealing how man should live in dominion in this world. Sadly, religious people have made this great reality highly unattainable, such that living as free as Jesus is described as sensual.

Just listen to Jesus very well. He said in  Joh 14:12 KJV “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” Did the Lord mean what he said? He brought all these to us because he came into this world. Christmas is celebrated as His entry into our world.

His death and resurrection were the final straw  that broke the camel’s back. We have now been brought into fellowship with Him. We are one with Him through His death. All these became possible because He came into this world, and that is Christmas, celebrating God’s answer to man’s questions.

To all celebrants of Christmas  ,  you ought to ask yourself the following  questions.

1 Have I been made free from sin?

2. Have I experienced the power of good health

3 Am I free from the controls of Satan and his devils?

If your answer is no, then you have to turn to the gospel and receive the solution of the gospel.

The pastor must be an example in his behaviour.

KEY SCRIPTURE  :1Ti 4:12 KJV “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

The pastor is called to be an example in conversation. This is an old English word that means manner of life, or better still, his general behaviour. The pastor must distinguish himself as a person of great character. Now, the epitome of excellence in behaviour is love. The bible says love is the fulfilment of the law. Rom 13:10 KJV” Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” The bible also reveals that against a life full of love, there is no law. Indeed, the fruit of the Spirit is love. All that we see as other virtues like peace, joy, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness and self-control are all the manifestations of love. The fruit of the Spirit is not nine but one, which is love and manifests  as all the beautiful virtues.

The basis of a life full of love is a life full of the spirit. Gal 5:16 KJV “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”Every pastor ought to demonstrate great maturity in his relationship with all persons. Now, that which describes immaturity is carnality. This is a life dominated by the flesh. The flesh is always engrossed in satisfying itself. The flesh makes  itself   the centre of everything.

The flesh seeks attention and wants an advantage over all others. These tendencies are the bases for greed, coveteousness, and striving, even with marriage partners and what have you. The pastor should be far above these things, for he should be a mature person, that is, a man of the Spirit.

As the scriptures describe love in 1 Corinthians 13. The pastor should be a kind man. He should be ready to sacrifice for the well-being of others. He is always moved by the plight of the poor and needy. Self-righteousness is simply out of his life because he is purely a product of God’s grace, which h attributes EVERYTHING he is or has as a product of the Spirit. He would never compare himself with others. The pastor is never arrogant. He deeply respects the uniqueness of all and would not act in ways that cast degrading tendencies on others.

The pastor should be a person of great humility. Humility is simply a life that honours God’s word. It is in submission to God that shows real humility. Humility is never in any outward gestures of piety and calmness. One may show all these, but deep rebellions towards the Lord. It is one’s submission to God and His word that makes him or her relate to others with great respect for all, both young and old.

BE AN EXAMPLE IN   WORD

KEY SCRIPTURE:1Ti 4:12 KJV ” Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

Timothy is counselled to be an example in word. This would involve general communication as well as speaking the  word of God. Our words are the easiest description of who we are. Mat 12:34 KJV” O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.” Our words reveal who one is as well as what he or she believes.

Words that distinguish us among others are words of love. These are words that release encouragement, respect for all ,and generally words seasoned with salt. Col 4:6 KJV” Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” The pastor must always have some words of hope , love and faith. Secondly, he must be full of wisdom to  counsel people wisely. He must be knowledgeable  to speak with insight. Knowledge demands discipline in learning to be acquired. Besides natural  insight, which comes by reading, there is the need for divine insight that gets into the roots of issues in people’s lives. This kind of insight comes as a result of devotion  in prayer. In  this way, his words are a great delight to his listeners.

Our Lord Jesus was a man of great words. Jesus could cause thousands to keep listening to   Him for days. He spoke with a heart of compassion, and so it was full of the influence of the Spirit. Wherever  there is true love in operation, the spirit of God would have free access to work through  that vessel.

The following should not characterise the words of a pastor.

1 His words should be devoid of insults.

2 Devoid of aĺ lies

3 Devoid of prejudices, and so seek to have first-hand information by contacting those involved before making certain conclusions about people.

4  His words must be devoid of unbelief and doubt.

5 He should avoid expensive jokes

Finally, he should be a man of thanksgiving unto God and a man who blesses and not curses.

Be an example 2

KEY SCRIPTURE:1Ti 4:12 KJV “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

The key scripture instructs the young pastor to be an example to the brethren so that he would not be despised because he is young. This clearly reveals that most people have very wrong impressions about the young ones in ministry. This is one of the reasons the elderly Pharisee failed to receive the ministry of Jesus. Please, dear elderly one, do not fall for this error. God uses the old as well as the young. What matters is the condition of the heart as well as the election of the Lord. 1Sa 16:7 KJV” But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”

Now, back to our discussion on the pastor being an example, the young pastor must make the following decisions . He must decide to endure certain conditions, that he would be a worthy example unto the brethren.2Co 6:4 KJV “But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,” Apostle Paul says he approves himself as a worthy minister not by eloquently but by showing much patience in all kinds  of challenging  situations. Well, I do not refer to sicknesses among these, because Jesus clearly dealt with sicknesses in His atoning work. I mean any form of adversity that you have to endure.

I once joined the youth of our church at a camp meeting. We  went to one of the secondary  schools in Accra. I decided to join them to sleep in the dormitory. I had my car and could have decided to go to a better place, yet I was with them in the big dormitory. Deep in the night, we all realised that the school was highly infested with bed bugs. Everyone  had their share of the bites from these night insects. I could have decided to leave  and go find a better place, yet I stayed with them in the  dormitory. The nights  weren’t pleasant, yet I did not leave . Although it was unpleasant, it was a great example to the brethren.

This does not go for only pastors, but anyone who seeks to make a serious impact in life must decide to do more than the rest of the people do. If reading, you must read more. If it is prayer, you must pray more. If giving, you must give your best. Your giving may not be more  than everyone else’s, but just do your best. Taking the lead in doing a lot of things clearly makes you an example.

THOUGHT: YOU WOULD BE AN EXAMPLE IF YOU ARE READY TO DO MORE THAN THE REST

Command and teach.

KEY SCRIPTURE 1Ti 4:11 KJV” These things command and teach.”

Apostle Paul now tells Pastor Timothy about how to present such important truths to his congregation. He said he must command and teach  them to do or observe all that he has been telling them. To Command demands a level of seriousness for what he is saying. When the Lord was speaking about Abraham during the period when the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah had risen to Him. He made the following statement about Abraham: Gen 18:19 KJV” For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.”

The people  of Sodom and Gomorrah had no guides or restrictions, and so they lived like wild beasts. The church, which is the pillar and ground of truth, must  not tolerate  certain ways of doing things but must insist. that God’s acceptable ways are adhered to

The pastor must demonstrate a level of sternness in his presentations.

An example of a pastor who was not stern with his children, and so their deviant ways cost him his very life. This was Eli the priest. 1Sa 3:13 KJV ” For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.” Eli was not stern with his sons. He allowed them to do what they wanted. Eli died on the very day his sons were slain on the battlefield. The scripture tells pastors to warn the unruly in the church. 1 Th 5:14 KJV “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.”

Dear pastors, Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy as well as the church leaders in Thessalonica, yet by extension, he is writing to every pastor or minister who speaks to some congregation of a sort.Dear pastor, a command has no ambiguity about it. It is the only way certain things ought to be done. Failure to do them or doing it the way that is required would result in corresponding consequences that are always unpleasant.

In John 2:15 the Lord seeing that the house God which should be a holy place of prayer had teaching of God’s word , had  become a market  centre where all kinds of things was sold. The Lord made scourge of cords and aggressively drove out these traders and money changers. There moments when the pastor should come against evil with the seriousness that it deserves.

GODLY TRAINING 5

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1Ti 4:8 NET For “physical exercise has some value, but godliness is valuable in every way. It holds promise for the present life and for the life to come.”

This time, we look at how to train ourselves in patience. Every Christian needs to exhibit patience in one matter or another. It is very unfortunate to see Christian couples at each other’s throats, mostly because of very trivial matters. This is all because they have not trained themselves to relate patiently with each other. The tool to prepare yourself to act rightly is the word of God.

Every Christian virtue has faith as its foundation, upon which other virtues are added to make a complete superstructure. 2Pe 1:5 NET “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge;”

How do you add these virtues to our faith. You do so by calling yourself a  person of great patience. Many people describe themselves by the common traits that they normally portray. As we said in one of the discussions, we said the tongue controls or bridles the whole body.Jas 3:2 NET” For we all stumble in many ways. If someone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect individual, able to control the entire body as well.”Each time you claim you are inpatient you set up your whole system to act impatiently.

The scriptures have revealed that our spirit is love, which manifests in a number of positive virtues. Consistently tell yourself  you are loved and so very patient. Respond to people’s mistakes by saying that you are patient.

Sadly, the common feeling is that if you talk this way, people will take advantage of you. That is an error. Acting from the spirit’s control makes you win or puts you in charge always. Rom 2:7 NET” eternal life to those who by perseverance in good works seek glory and honour and immortality.” Always choose the way of the spirit. Those who choose the path of the word are always rewarded with peace, honour, glory and eternal life. What more can you ask for?

The Lord Jesus practised the acts of speaking rightly about himself always. The Lord never said one negative thing  about Himself. He said I am meek and lowly in heart and so my yoke is easy and my burden is light Matthew 11:28-29.He said I am the light of the world and that was His normal practise.Indeed He never acted wronggly or ever failed to relate well to people.Train yourself to be patient and act rightly always by saying to yourself as well as others that that is what you are.

SAY THE FOLLOWING:  My spirit is one with the Holy Spirit, and so I am love personified. I have peace, joy , and patience, and I never misbehave under any condition. I am always in control of myself. Glory be to God.

[2] We all fail in many areas, but especially with our words. Yet if we’re able to bridle the words, we say we are powerful enough to control ourselves in every way, and that means our character is mature and fully developed.

GODLY TRAINING 4

KEY SCRIPTURE:1Ti 4:8 KJV “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”

We continue with our discussion on godly training. One important ingredient in every form of training is discipline. Discipline is restraining yourself to live within the rules. You must know what you seek to achieve, and then the requirements for achieving that goal. After setting up your goal, you discipline yourself to do whatever it takes to achieve it.

This time, we will look at how to effectively feed our hearts and minds with the word of God. The greatest good you can do for yourself concerning the word of God is to accept that it is the absolute truth. It would be of no benefit to have so much of the world in you without it having any transforming power  over your life. The power in God’s word can be encountered.

When we believe all that it says.

God’s word is extremely powerful. Heb 4:12 KJV” For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” It can be of benefit if you believe it.

Now, one way of building the word into your  being is to keep hearing it over and over again. We live at a time that  we have the word of God right on our phones, and it could be read to us while we may be driving , walking or doing household chores. The bible says faith comes by hearing the word of God. Rom 10:17. Discipline yourself to keep hearing it. You can also use your leisure moments to read it to yourself. Just keep at it, and you will soon see how far you have grown in the spirit.

This is a discipline that you must practise always. If you were very diligent at it , then you could go through the bible in just two weeks. As the scriptures fill your soul, your spiritual capacity will increase. God places various responsibilities into our hands according to our spiritual capacity.

You can also listen to messages of anointed  men of God, whether they are  dead or living presently. Anytime you listen̈ to a man of God, you   have  an opportunity  to fellowship with the grace that worked  in their lives. There have been some people who have been anointed by the anointing of these men just by listening to them over and over again. You would learn a lot.  As well as being impacted positively, as you listen to such anointed men of God.

GODLY  TRAINING 3

KEY SCRIPTURE:1Ti 4:8 KJV” For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”

We continue with our discussion on our topic of godly training. We said in our previous study that the state of one’s spirit determines whether weak or strong he may be. One is said to have a strong spirit if his or her life is dominated by the word of God. We learnt that one aspect of conditioning our spirit to be submitted to GOD is by meditation.

We would study how to employ meditation to condition our lives in various ways. The bible teaches that if a man does not offend by his words, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle  his whole body. Decide that no wrong word will proceed from your mouth. By wrong words, I mean words that are contrary to the scriptures.

You can use the word of God by meditation to condition your mind and spirit to help you  to speak rightly always. Meditate on Proverbs 4:24 that says:” Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.” You can frame it this way: According to the instruction of the scriptures, I put a froward mouth away from me, and a perverse lips far away from me. Practice meditating on this for an appreciable length of time till you see that you are very cautious about the words that proceed from your mouth.

The next step is to train yourself to speak words of faith and actually believe them. Most people speak words of doubt or unbelief, and so they are almost always defeated. Some also speak words of hope, which is good, but to benefit from the words of hope, you must turn them into words of faith. If you  are anticipating a need to be met, you may boldly say , ” My father has answered me, and so I would have it. Anytime you are asked about it, you say God has answered me, and I will have it. Do not say I am believing God for it. This throws your answer into the future, and you may never have it. Train yourself to talk rightly always. If you are sick , you may say Ì believe I have received my healing.

Now you should also practise controlling your temper. You may do this by telling yourself that you do not have a bad temper. Say I don’t  keep offences but easily forgive. Even when your emotions suggest to you to be offensive, tell yourself I have the spirit of love, and so I am gentle with all persons. Keep saying these things to yourself, and very soon, you will never throw harsh words at anyone.
