THE FATHER’S TESTIMONY OF THE SON

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 5:37 KJV” And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.”

God our father has testified about His Son throughout the scriptures. The bible is basically a testimony of the Father about His Son Jesus. The testimony about Jesus is a revelation of God’s redemption for mankind. It is the revelation of God the Saviour. This is the name of our Lord Jesus. His name is “Jehoshua” in Hebrew. This name means Jehovah is Saviour or Salvation. The bible is a progressive revelation of God and His ways and acts. He revealed HIMSELF to Abraham in Genesis 17: 1 as the Almighty or “Shaddai” in Hebrew. He revealed Himself to Moses as “Yahweh” or Jehovah (Exodus 6:2-3) This name Yahweh or Jehovah is the English form of the Hebrew non vowel form of the name “YHWH.”

God revealed Himself to the various individuals at specific occasions as follows

1. Jehovah Rapha -The Lord the Healer. Exodus 15:26

2. Jehovah Nissi -The Lord our Banner. Exodus 17:13-15

3. Jehovah Mekadishcum -The Lord that sanctifies. Exodus 31:13

4. Jehovah Shalom – The Lord is peace. Judges 6:24

5. Jehovah Saboath – The Lord of host.

6. Jehovah Tsedkenu -The Lord our Righteousness. Jeremiah 33:16

7. Jehovah Shammah- The Lord is present.

We realise that God has revealed Himself in ancient times under various names. In these last days, He has revealed Himself as the Saviour. Act 4:12 KJV” Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Our Lord Jesus is not just a lesser being to the father, but indeed one with the Father. (John 10:30) He is the Lord the Saviour. This is the last and final revelation of God to men.

All men are to receive this final revelation of God in their hearts. John 5:38 KJV “And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.” This is the era of God’s great salvation of mankind. If men would accept God who has come to us as the Saviour, there would be great peace and restoration from all kinds of calamities and dangers 2nd Corinthians 6:2 KJV (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.).  God’s testimony about His Son is all about His Salvation. Receive Him into your life and give an end to the life of pain and sorrow.

YOUR WORKS TESTIFY OF YOU

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 5:36 KJV” But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.”

There is a proverb, that says ” Your actions are so loud that, I can’t hear you, when you speak”. Your actions define who you are. They are a sum total of all that you know and can do. Your actions do not err about who you are and what you can do. The Lord said, the very works which the Father has given me to finish, that will testify of who I am. The Lord could boldly appeal to His works to testify of Him. He said His real meat or food was doing His father’s work, and to finish it. There was no tendency to please Himself or to be sluggish about the father’s business.

No one could say that the Lord Jesus was irresponsible about that heavenly task. His undivided attention and dogged commitment drew the father to approve of His works with mighty signs and wonders. Act 2:22 says ” Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:” When Peter was testifying about Jesus in the above verse, he added that ‘and all of you know these things’ In the light of this the Lord could appeal to His very works to stage a true, undeniable defense for Him. Nobody could challenge the many evidences of His works.

Can your works stage a defense for who you are? Can they authenticate your Credibility? Apostle Paul said, we have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, and commend ourselves to the conscience of all men in the sight of God.2 Corinth 4:2. Apostle Paul was indirectly testifying that his works in the service of the master can testify of him. What does it mean for your works to testify of you? It means what people know and have seen you do is the real fact about you. It also means that, there are no hidden works that may cancel all that is known of you in the open. Who are you? What do you do for God? Are you what people see of you in the open?

OUR TRUE WITNESS

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 5:31 KJV” If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.”

The Jews put up a lot of arguments to challenge, the authenticity of Jesus. The Lord made sure he did not appeal to His personal defense of himself. When he said, if I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true, he did not mean I will be telling lies. The bible says, He is the way, the truth and the Life. Jesus is called the truth. John 14:6. He answered Pilate, I came to witness to the truth. John 18:37

Even at the moment of being killed or crucified, He never shrank from saying the truth. What the Lord meant by my witness will be a lie simply means ‘I will not defend myself ‘ I will allow another to make a defense for me.

The Lord is teaching us a very important lesson over here. We should not strive at proving how right we are. He left his defense to the witness of John. Joho 5:32 KJV “There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.” John’s witness is basically the witness of the scripture. It was prophesied that John would make certain statements about Him, which has all been fulfilled. What the Lord was saying here is that, I appeal to what the word says about me, that is the truth. John only echoed the scriptures. Isaiah 40:3 KJV” The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”

From all that we have said above what and who should witness to our Credibility? The word of God. Our lives ought to be patterned after the order of the word such that, we do not have to strive to prove our truthfulness or genuineness. When people read the word, they have to see our reflection in the scriptures. We should be able to say, My witness would be false but the witness of the scriptures is forever truth.

How could this be done? Apostle Paul gives us one of his philosophies to life. Acts 24:16 KJV “

And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.”

A life without decision is a life without any direction. Apostle Paul says I have DECIDED to maintain a conscience void of offence before God and man. This is what makes his action patterned in line with the scriptures.

PORTRAITS OF HUMILITY

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 5:30 KJV “I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.”

Our Lord Jesus said in our opening scripture that, “I can of mine own self do nothing….” What did He mean by this statement? Was he saying unless His father moves Him into action, he could do nothing? Well, this was not what He meant. He was saying, I do nothing to please myself. I have given up my will to Him. He always received an instruction from the Father before He will ever take any action. John 8:29 KJV “And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.” The Lord Jesus lived out the dreams of His Father. The Father was always with Him.

The Lord added that He does not judge wrongly because He judges from the Father’s point of view. You can never go wrong if you seek to please the Lord in all you do. The Lord Jesus is revealing in this verse one of the highest principles for living, that is humility. The following are some of the portraits of humility as demonstrated by the Lord.

1. The HUMBLE, the greatest in the kingdom. When the disciples asked about the greatest person in the kingdom of heaven. The Lord called a little child and used him as an example of the greatest person. Matthew 18:1-4. True humility acknowledges the superiority of God and always gives Him the first place. We are always torn between doing that which pleases us and God’s way. A humble heart quickly throws away his personal ambitions and chooses God’s way.

2. Humility sees the greatness of God’s might and absolutely depends on it. The proud cannot cast their troubles unto the Lord, because they can’t appreciate the almightiness of God. The humble trusts in the Lord like a little child. God therefore gives grace to the humble. He supplies the ability to overcome, whiles He resists the proud.

3. The humble waits for the Lord’s signal before acting. He said, I do not do, or say until the Father tells me. King Saul could not wait for the priest Samuel to come and offer the sacrifice. 1st Samuel 13:8-14. “Samuel told King Saul, that thou has acted foolishly for not keeping the Lord’s commandment, for now God would have established your throne forever.” Many young people preparing for marriage could not wait to be joined in marriage before mating, destroying the foundation of their marital home. True humility builds fear in the hearts of the children of God for the Lord. Remember, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE DEAD?

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 5:28 KJV “Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,”

We would look at the case of Lazarus and the rich man to have an insight into the state of those who die. Please read through Luke 16:19-31. In that story or parable, the Lord made mention of certain specific names, like Lazarus, Abraham, Moses and the prophets. The Lord Jesus never makes fables of individuals, more so the Patriarchs. This is an event that took place and should not be interpretated as just an illustration of an idea.

The Lord said the poor man Lazarus died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom. The rich man died and was buried, but he went to hell. It was not His body that went to hell but his Spirit. Anyone who dies without knowing Jesus as his Lord goes to hell, to await for the final resurrection of the dead and subsequent judgement for hell and the devil to be cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:12.

In 2 Kings 2: 11, the prophet Elijah was taken bodily to heaven (to be in heaven his body would transform into a celestial one 1st Corinthians 15:40). In Deuteronomy 34:5 Moses also died on the land of Moab. Moses was buried on the Land of Moab. In the days of our Lord Jesus Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus and His three disciples, Peter, James and John. Matthew 17:3 KJV” And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.” Please consider this, Elijah went in body to heaven. Moses died and his Spirit was sent to heaven. In Matthew these two prophets of God came to Jesus. It shows, when Moses died, he went to the same place as Elijah. He did not sleep in the grave.

Why would the dead hear the voice of Jesus and resurrect?

Please understand that all these millions of people dead are all in the form of bones, which may even be rotten, or just ashes. On that resurrection day there would be a recreating and a repossessing of the bodies either from heaven, or hell to be finally judged. They will either go into life or destruction in the lake of fire. The resurrection is a great miracle. Presently there is no spirit of anyone in the grave. When the bible uses the word sleep, it is a figure of speech that means to be dead.

John 11:11″These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep”.

THOSE IN THE GRAVE HEAR HIS VOICE

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 5:28 KJV “Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,”

The Lord made mention of a time that He will call for all those in the grave to hear His voice and then respond, by resurrecting from their graves. This statement has brought lots of controversies among certain bible teachers. Some say when people die, they sleep in the grave till the resurrection. The others say, when men die their Spirit depart to be with the Lord. What does the scriptures actually teach? I will want to make the following statement about the interpretation of scripture according to Isaiah 28:10 KJV “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:” it says to do justice in the interpretation of scripture, it must be done by being very judicious and looking at the scriptures, line upon line. Precept upon precept, here a little there a little. If you are to make a doctrine or interpretation without looking at other parts of the scripture that are related to the event you are considering, then you may be going into error.

From the statement our Lord made, it may mean all the dead are in their graves. Meaning the Spirit, soul and the body, are in the grave. Is that what really happens? Let’s take a journey through the scriptures and look at all the related issues concerning people who die.

1. What happens when people die? We would look at a couple of scriptures to help ourselves. The scriptures always use the term ‘gave up the ghost or the Spirit. I will give a number of instances. Genesis 25:8 KJV “Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.” The following scriptures also describe the death of Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and any other person as giving up the ghost. The references are as follows: Ishmael (Genesis 25:17), Isaac (Genesis 35:29), Jesus (Matthew 15:37).

When the Lord was dying, He said in Luke 23:46 KJV “And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

When one dies his Spirit leaves the body (James 2:26). In the Lord’s case He committed His spirit into God’s hands. His Spirit left to be with the Father. In Philippians 1:23, Apostle Paul said the following ” For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:” he said when I depart, or when I give up the ghost or Spirit, I will be with Christ, who is presently in heaven. He says the same thing concerning every other believer in 2nd Corinthians 5:1 “That when we live this body or tabernacle, we would be clothed with a heavenly one. He went on to say that, we leave this place to be present with the Lord. 2nd Corinthians 5:6. Let’s look at what Ecclesiastes said concerning the Spirit of man when it dies. Ecclesiastes 3:21 KJV “Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?”

From this journey through the bible, we can establish that;

1. When a man dies his Spirit leaves the body.

2. The Spirit departs to be with the Lord, if the person is a child of God.

We would continue with this study to understand what it means for those in the grave to hear his voice and respond.

DEALING WITH CARNALITY  2

KEY SCRIPTURE: Romans 8:6 KJV “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”

Carnality is such a serious canker in the lives of most Christians and needs to be totally destroyed in the lives of children of God. Christians are born into the Spirit, and must live in the Spirit. Romans 8:9 KJV” But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be

that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” Carnality takes one out of the Spirit and makes him a product of the flesh. It all begins in the mind and it is strengthened by the mouth.

Unscriptural declarations, no matter where it is made has a great toll on the child of God. It may be an idle word or a word meant to express one’s thought or feeling; that may not seem to have any adverse effect on the Christian. The Lord said in Matthew 12:36, that no idle word will go unpunished.

Some say we must admit the truth and say who we are. As a result of this, some Christians make statements like, we are men and not angels and so don’t expect us to live above certain standards. This statement may be the fact, that is a reality of the human experience, but it is definitely not the truth.

The truth is what the bible says about us, and when we agree with it, the supernatural power of God transports us from ordinary human feelings and actions into the spirit. Apostle James shows why many Christians, including pastors err. They make statements that are not in line or does not synchronize with the scriptures. James 3:2 KJV “For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

According to the above verse, (James 3:2) the man who errs in his words will offend in all he does.

When your words does not align with scripture, you are a erring in your words, therefore you are a ‘nepius’ , a baby or better still a carnal person.

The man who does not err in his words, that is, He always speaks in line with the scripture is able to control his whole body. Apostle James calls him a perfect man. The scripture calls you a saint or a holy one, don’t call yourself a sinner. The scripture says the old nature died with Jesus, and so stop saying the old man is still alive and controlling your actions. Do not speak according to the weakness you see in your actions, but speak in line with, what the death and resurrection of Jesus achieved for you. It is always what you believe and say, that controls you.

Finally take time to speak every good thing the word says about you to yourself. Repeat it over and over again to yourself, until your consciousness are dominated by it. Many wrong actions come from lies that, demons say to you. Please say the truth to yourself and you would erode carnality from yourselves.

THOUGHT: FAITH IS SAYING AND BELIEVING WHAT GOD SAYS AND NOT YOUR FEELING.

DEALING WITH CARNALITY

KEY SCRIPTURE: Romans 8:6 KJV “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”

We are still studying our topic on a walk with Jesus through the gospels. In our current study we are considering the supernatural life called eternal life or ZOE. We learnt that this eternal life has very high potentials, for it is the same life that God the Father has, as well as the Son.

According to John 1:4-5 this life is our light or our solution, that cheaply destroys Satan’s power or darkness. We also learnt that carnality is the only power that renders eternal life ineffective, and as a result makes the child of God, to become so ordinary and therefore suffers like other men, or mere men. (1st Corinthians 3:3)

From the above expose, we see that carnality is the greatest enemy of the Christian.

(Satan can have no victory over the child of God, until he or she becomes carnal).

The bible teaches that, the Christian who embraces carnality is death. The power of eternal life is rendered totally ineffective because of Carnality. The answer to carnality is spirituality. Spirituality is not about looking into the heavens but simply to be scriptural. Remember that we said carnality is simply living outside the word of God.

The highest form of carnality is to be unbelieving.

Unbelief is a rejection of the word or scriptures. It is a refusal to be committed to the demands of the scriptures. Carnality also shows its head in many lustful appetites.

When any man pursues these wrong appetites, he or she deactivates the power and strength of eternal life in him.

HOW DO WE DEAL WITH CARNALITY THEN?

1. Take some moments to think about the great effect of carnality. Consider the amazing benefits of the ZOE life, and how useless it is for the flesh to deprive you of these glorious benefits of the divine nature.

(Constructive thinking answers negative unproductive actions)

2. To deal with carnality, one must be given to the word. Let the word of God dwell in you richly. Col 3:16

3. Decide to believe the word in all cases and also, to do as it says.

4. Do not allow any carnal or fleshly suggestion that opposes the word to prevail in you. Refuse any such suggestion with the scriptures. You may also say no, and add the scripture that speaks concerning that thing.

Say continually to yourself that you would not allow the flesh to deprive you of the glorious power of eternal life which is the light of men, and cheaply overcomes Satan’s power.

Never confess you are a man who is weak towards the flesh, no, never. What you say, will dominate you.

Say that you are of the Spirit, and in the Spirit, and so have overcome every carnal way. This confession will surely put you over always.

CONFESSION

I am in the Spirit, and a partaker of the divine nature. I have escaped the corruption that is sin, sicknesses and Satan’s power, (corruption is caused by carnality). I give no place to carnality, no, never, for I will never exchange my authority in the Spirit for carnality, that will make me subjected to Satan. With eternal life in me, I am forever superior to Satan and all his devices

ACTIVATING THE DIVINE LIFE

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 5:26 KJV For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

In our previous study, we realised that we have the same life as our Lord Jesus Christ. This kind of life is called Eternal life. The Greek word for it is ZOE. It is a higher life, with supernatural potentials. It is superior to the power of the enemy. The bible describes the relation with Satan’s power in the following manner. John 1:4,5 KJV In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” The life in the Son is the light of men, that destroys every power of the devil. What is the power of the devil? Sin, sicknesses, failure, torment of all kinds.

If the power of the devil has never overcome the life in the Son, because it is the light of men, then, these negative forces, including disease, demonic activities, sin, and the rest, should never dominate the child of God who has eternal life in him.

We realise that most Christians are rather weak and mostly subjected to these forces of darkness. How does the Christian activate the ZOE life in him, to be able to destroy evil, like light effortlessly humiliates darkness?

The scripture in 2 Pater 1:4 shows us how to get this life into operation. It reads as follows, “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”

1. The word of God has supernatural powers to transform us into what it talks about. Receive the word.

2. By becoming partakers of the divine nature we escape the corruption in the world through lust.

This means it is carnality or lust that deactivates the child of God’s supernatural powers, and makes him or her susceptible to the power of darkness.

What is CARNALITY? It is simply living outside the word of God. It also means when one is influenced by anything other than the word of God.

To activate the powers of the divine nature, or eternal life, you take a stand on the word of God, and refuse to act contrary to what the word says.

Until one becomes carnal, he escapes the corruption or the power of darkness to afflict and control him.

We take a stand on the word by believing what it says, proclaiming your commitment to it, and then acting in line with what it says. THIS IS WHAT ACTIVATES THE POWER OF THE DIVINE LIFE TO QUENCH EVIL WITH EASE.

THOUGHT: TO ACTIVATE THE DIVINE LIFE, BELIEVE THE WORD, BOLDLY PROCLAIM IT, AND ACT IN LINE WITH WHAT IT SAYS.

THE SON HAS SAME LIFE AS THE FATHER

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 5:26 KJV “For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;”

The Lord Jesus according to this scripture shares the life of the Father. What is the life of the Father? 1st John 5:11 KJV “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” The life which the Father gave to the Son is called eternal life. This word “eternal” also means unending, or life without end. It also means, there is no power whether natural or supernatural that can overcome this life of God or this eternal life. Apostle Paul describes this kind of life in the following scripture 2nd Timothy 1:10 KJV “But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” Apostle Paul calls this life an immortal life. It is an incorruptible life. When a man is born again, the natural life is supplanted or taken over by this supernatural life.

In John 15, the word talks about our Lord Jesus who is the vine and we are the branches. The life of the branches is received from the vine. We have this very life of the Father in us.

Please note: every spiritual condition or state is ONLY accessible by faith. You can express the effect or impact of this supernatural life by believing and declaring that we have the very life of God.

We must be fully conscious as well as affirming that we have a life, superior to demon power, superior to disease and superior to the forces of this life. In 2nd Peter 1:4 it reads, ” Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” Through the revelation of the word of God, we are partakers or fellow participators of the nature of God.

Dear reader, the Lord Jesus, at the time before creation, had the same glory(nature) as the Father. John 17:5 KJV “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”  He had to become a man, so that through death, He could take away our sins and imparted to us His life. This life is the eternal life.

It is also called the resurrection life.

It has abolished spiritual death and has control over all the causes of physical death. The apostle Paul who had a very clear understanding of this life in him could not be destroyed by any of the life destroying agents in 2nd Corinthians 11:24-28.

The following are some of the life destroying agents

1. Five times forty stripes less one.

2. Thrice beaten with rods.

3. Once stoned almost to death.

4. Thrice suffered ship wreck.

5. Stayed in the sea for a night and a day, and many more.

All the above could not kill him, until he said, I have finished my course. Then was he ready to go.

CONFESSION

I have the life of God in me. The life of God  is superior to all destructive forces, whether physical or spiritual. By the divine life in me, I have escaped the corruption in this life through carnality. My life manifests the praises of God.
