CHARACTER STUDY: PAUL 71

KEY SCRIPTURE: Acts 20:20. And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house,

From our key scripture, Paul says he taught them publicly and from house to house. This involves mass meetings as well as one on one meetings as well.

Our Lord Jesus in his days on the earth, employed the same principle. He taught the people en-mass and one on one.  Nicodemus the Jewish lawyer came to him by night. The Lord had the patience to explain a whole lot of things to him. Paul’s teachings in the public places and in their houses was not by special invitation. He purposefully went around in search of people to share the Gospel with. Do not feel too big going around knocking on doors to share the Gospel with people. Would the master himself have done this if he was around? I believe he would. Mass meetings does a lot of good, yet personal efforts are easily assessed and could be monitored well.

In verse 21, he talked about some of the things he taught.

“Testifying both to the Jews and also to the Greeks, repentance towards God and faith towards our Lord Jesus Christ. ” Paul preached repentance form all wrong notions about God . The Jews could not see God as their father neither could they think of him as one that they could relate with. The Greeks also thought of God as an idol made by human hands. They also needed to change their minds concerning God. One of Satan’s attack against humanity is to paint God differently from who he is. Many people because of challenges and difficulties see God as one who is not blessing them and not making things easy for them. Man needs to repent from a whole lot of things about our father God This is the reason every child of God must know the truth and boldly talk about Him.

They were also to exercise their faith towards our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Jesus, every divine provision is settled.  It is faith in Him that gives is access to the grace of God.

He adds in the verse 22 that he goes “bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall him.” He said this in the light that there have been countless prophecies that in Jerusalem, the Jews would take a hold of him bind him and send him to Rome. He knew afflictions and tribulations awaited him in Jerusalem, yet he was ready to go. Why did Paul not stay away from all these problems? This is for us to answer.

  PRAYER

Father in Heaven, I pray that as I study your word and fellowship with your spirit, help me to effectively share your word to the many that Satan has held in deception.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Acts 20:19 ” Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:”

Apostle Paul told the leaders of the church in Ephesus that he served with much tears. He says in Philippians 2:12 that we must work out our salvation with fear and trembling. He says these things with the understanding that, we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ, that everyone may receive the things done in the body, whether it be good or bad. He added, knowing the terror of the Lord, we persuade men. God is not a respecter of men.

It is rather unfortunate that these days, some people hide behind the teachings of the grace God to do all kinds of things. Dear child of God, grace under no condition gives anyone license to sin. Grace rather empowers us or endues us with the ability to live an excellent life. It is in this light that Apostle Paul reminds the brethren in Rome, that is in Romans 6:14, that sin shall not have dominion over them, because they are not under the law, but under grace. Every leader must therefore take heed to himself or herself first before the Church of God. (Acts 20:28) If you fail to do so, you may be like the sand paper.  Sand paper is used to polish wooden surfaces, smoothen it and makes it look very polished and clean. After using it, it is thrown away.  That would not be your portion in Jesus name.

Paul also endured trials from the Jews, yet never gave up or acted in any way unseemingly. In all these things his ministry was not blamed. 2nd Corinthians 6:3 “Giving no offence in anything that the ministry be not blamed.” He stood in all these difficult times. May you receive grace and ability to overcome any challenge that Satan would throw at you.

Paul said ” But in all things, approving ourselves as ministers of God in much patience, in afflictions, necessities, in distresses.” (2nd Corinthians 6:3)

In verse 20 of Act 20, Paul said that he kept back nothing that was profitable unto the brethren. He did this by actions and teaching.  In actions, he meant by example. The greatest teaching that any leader can give his followers is a good example. It always takes discipline to be a good example.  You must bring yourself under the rules. He is saying by this, he poured his life unto them. May your life be an example unto others.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that by your grace I may endure every attack of the enemy, that my service unto you, would not be blamed. May my life be an example unto many in Jesus name.

KEY SCRIPTURE: ACTS 20:19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying-in wait of the Jews:

Read Acts 20:17-33

Apostle Paul speaks to the leaders of the church in Ephesus before going to Jerusalem. He knew he would not see them again. He then gave them his last words.

Apostle Paul began by telling them the attitude and manner with which he served God in their midst. He did not refer to himself as leading them but serving them. He said he served the Lord in humility of mind This is an exhortation that every leader, pastor in the house of God must learn. Paul meant he worked or served with the mentality that, God will one day reward his work, and so he had to put up every meek attitude. Every leader must always carry a humble attitude, for if you lose sight of the fact that you are serving under God, pride would easily set in, and you would begin to do things as if you are of yourself. Many leaders in the house of God have fallen into all kinds of deceptive sins because they began to fill they are the ultimate or above everybody. It is a big error, to think that you are above everybody in the house of God.

Do not think of your function or role as a position but just a duty and a divine responsibility. It is what you do that has offered you the privilege to be where you are. Our father God has appointed each of us in his vineyard. Now listen dear leader, YOU ARE NOT SUPERIOR TO ANYBODY IN THE HOUSE OF GOD. We are all equal in the sight of God, playing various roles. Your function demands special honour from others so that the work would be effectively done. 1st Timothy 5:17” Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially those who labor in the word and in teaching.” God has designed that leaders who labor in teaching in the house of GOD must be given double honour, they must be appreciated as well. As they give honour to you, you must likewise humble yourself towards them by showing true love for them. In this way, you will not fall into Satan’s deception of pride and arrogance. He said he also served with tears. this serving with tears had to do with his prayer for them as well as enduring certain temptations. (Acts 20:31). He meant he served with a strong awareness with the presence of God that was with him and his purpose that must be done.

 PRAYER

My heavenly father, I pray that we will all serve in your vineyard with meekness and reverence for you,

KEY SCRIPTURE: ACTS 20:11. Then they all went back upstairs, shared in the Lord’s Supper, and ate together. Paul continued talking to them until dawn, and then he left.

In our key scripture apostle Paul shared with the brethren and continued till dawn. This event has a number of issues to teach us. The first lesson to consider is the diligence of Apostle Paul who stood on his feet to share the gospel for almost eighteen hours and over?  I believe he was sustained by the Holy Spirit powers. I also believe he was a man who did not over indulge himself so he had a lot of energy within him. From the previous stories we read about apostle, we saw he was a very active man who had a lot movement during the many journeys   he made. I believe all these things impacted on him to be strong.

Secondly the brethren were also ready to stay up even till the next morning. They were simply amazing.

These people really wanted more from the Lord. The bible did not say any left the meeting or some of them demanded the early closure to the meeting. There are some people who easily get agitated when  the meeting travels a few hours or a few moments after the scheduled time. Someone would say these people had nothing important to do and so they stayed. Dear brother, what is as important as receiving  the word of God.

In Luke 10:38,41, the Lord visited Martha and Mary but Martha. was involved with cooking and other household chores. She got desperate and complained to Jesus as follows, ´     Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she helps me. The Lord also answered her as follows” Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things, only one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her”. The Lord said one thing is needful and Mary has chosen that good part. What was it? Mary had chosen to attend to the word of God. The Lord calls it the good part and no one shall take it from her. Please may we learn some wisdom from the master. Giving attention to the word of God is the only good thing and it shall never be taken away from you. Every other achievement we obtain as humans outside the word of God would be left here in this physical world. Those who receive God’s word into their spirit shall have it with them into the next world.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Acts 20:9 ” And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.”

Apostle Paul in Troas spent some moment ministering or sharing the word of God there. Paul had quite a short time to stay with these brethren and so he had to give them much. He spent a great deal of time speaking to these brethren. He spoke deep into the might.

One of the young men sat in a window and over the period of listening to Paul he was taking over by sleep and so fell through the window onto the ground. This event must teach ushers in every church or meeting to be alert to check all those whose sitting place could be dangerous to them. Children should be specially protected against accident or straying away from the meeting place into some strange hands.

The bible said this young man who fell off from the third floor was taken up dead. Apostle Paul was not moved but went over and prayed for him to come back to life. Please listen, although the boy might have mistakenly sat in the window it is one of the opportunistic strategies of the devil to disrupt such a wonderful meeting. Please ministers of God, don’t get scared when such accidents come up. Satan just want to break the faith of the people and disrupt the meeting as a whole. Exercise faith in the word to preserve the serenity of the meeting and the impact that the Spirit intends to get across to the people.

I had an experience when a girl fell and hit the back part of her head on the edge of the stairway and starting bleeding profusely. When she was carried to me, a voice started speaking through her. The voice said, “you see we have killed her, we have killed her”. I quickly reacted, you liar gets off in Jesus name, nothing is wrong with her. This girl although was bleeding never collapsed. She was sent to the hospital and was stable throughout the treatment given to her at the hospital”. Beloved readers if I had panicked in that moment the girl would have collapsed and something terrible could have happened to her. Every meeting held in the name of Jesus, has the Lord’s presence and he is ready to honour every step of faith we take. Satan has various ways to disrupt a meeting or service, make sure you don’t allow him to dictate affairs for you. He does not have that right but waits on you, what you will say and do.

I represent the king of kings and Lord of Lords. I am not ignorant of the devices of the devil. Satan would never have the last words in my life and in whatever I do. With faith in God’s word I am always in charge in Jesus name

KEY SCRIPTURE: ACTS 20:7. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight”.

The disciples met on the first day of the week. On this occasion they came to break bread. In 1st Corinthians 16:2 apostle Paul said the following …” Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come”. The first day of the week is Sunday. It is also referred to as the Lord’s day. Revelation 1:10 “I was in the spirit on the Lord’s day and I heard behind me a great voice, as a trumpet. Now I wish to say that issues of days for worship or Sabbath are minor issues which should not take too much of our attention. I am doing this explanation to help some brethren who out of lack of understanding have placed themselves under legalistic bondage. Romans 14:5 says “one man esteemeth one day above another, another esteemeth everyday alike, let every man be fully persuaded in his mind”.

Dear reader according to the old covenant God established that the Sabbath must be kept holy. Exodus 20:10 (please read it). The Lord Jesus before his Crucifixion introduced the new covenant and it was fully consummated when he gave his life on the cross (Matthew 26:26). After his resurrection the old covenant was put aside and the new covenant was enacted. For finding fault with them, he says, behold, the days come, saith the lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah” [Heb 8:8]. The Lord said he will cut a new covenant with the people of Israel.

After the Lord’s resurrection the Christians started meeting on the Lord’s day or the first day of the week.

The Jewish brethren did go to the synagogues on the Sabbath days. In the light of this Apostle Paul says in Colossians 2:16 that “let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of any holiday, or of the new moon, or the Sabbath days. (the bible talked about Sabbath days because we have the yearly Sabbath   and the weekly Sabbath). Do not allow anybody to condemn you because you don’t worship on the Sabbath or the seventh day.

Don’t intend to condemn anybody on the day he or she worships, yet I just want to establish that Sunday worshipers have not sinned in anyway; the provision of the new covenant makes it possible for a man or people to choose which day to honour God.

PRAYER

Father, I pray for all Christians to accept each other for the day that they chose to worship you. May we rather be concerned about pleasing the father as we win the world to Christ

CHARACTER STUDY: PAUL 65

KEY SCRIPTURE: ACTS 19:22 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

Apostle Paul had a very successful ministry in Ephesus. Many souls were won. Many lives were transformed and more people were set free from satanic and demonic bondages.

What was the next thing for him to have done? Naturally, he should have decided to set up a tent in Ephesus, that is to establish himself there, but Paul was not going to entangle himself with such things. Paul purposed in his spirit that when he passed through Macedonia and Achaia, he would go to Jerusalem, saying that afterwards he would end up at Rome. Apostle Paul purposed in his spirit.  This meant that nothing was going to change that. Many people give up on their decisions and wonder why this is so. The truth about such people is that, they did not purpose in their spirits. Indeed, a decided mind can never be tempted. He said that after he had visited Jerusalem, he would go to Rome.

Rome was the seat of the Emperor where the Roman empire ruled parts of the world from. Paul knew very well that the emperor would not take kindly to the preaching of any Lord over men. Such sayings will be treated as high treason. Rome was quite a journey away from Jerusalem and the journey had a lot of uncertainties. None of these things was of any serious concern to him.

Apostle Paul followed through with his decisions and firstly sent Timothy and Erastus to go ahead of him to Macedonia, whiles he stayed in Asia for a season. Around that time, there arose a strong persecution about the way or the faith. I believe by this time; Paul has been so used to these persecutions or uproars against the way or the faith such that it did not matter to him in any way.

If the church must rule the world with the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, then we must not be afraid of oppositions that rise against the gospel. We must stand and not be moved, for victory would be surely ours. Apostle Paul triumphed in his time. We would also triumph if we don’t love our lives and put our trust in the Lord to see us through.

CONFESSION

I am moved by the love of Christ; therefore, the gospel flows aggressively through me to many who are lost and nothing shall hinder its flow.

KEY SCRIPTURE: ACTS 19:20. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

Our key scripture said the word of God grew and prevailed. The word of God is God’s identity code.

Anywhere the word of God is allowed to grow it would prevail.

God’s word growing means the word spread in the vicinity and people also gave heed to the word of God. The word of God is not ordinary thoughts but supernatural expressions of ideas, instructions and intention backed by the life of God. The Lord Jesus said, the flesh profit nothing but the word that I speak unto you they are spirit and life. John 6:63, John 1:1 says the word and God are one. How is God like? Look at his word. They are His identity code. When a man honors the word in his life, he decodes God’s identity and he manifests in his life.

The people of Ephesus gave heed to the word of God and they saw the power of God. God became real to them. God is only hidden to those who are not yielding to his word.

Life is not a mystery. It may not fill with uncertainties depending. on how you walk with God. God has designed a path in which he walks with men and shows himself to them. It is the life of giving attention to His word. The bible says those who attend to the word of God and incline the ears to what he says would find it as life and health to all their flesh (Proverbs 4:20-22). Life becomes a mystery with unexplainable happenings and painful, hurtful situations because men live by their mind and their senses. I am not saying walking with God means everything is rosy. No, that is not what I mean. Walking with God by virtue of obeying the word, the makes you an automatic champion irrespective of what happens. You receive the energy to stand and overcome. You are not amazed at what happens but the word prevails for you.

The word would always grow and would prevail. Dear child of God, don’t get worried about the uncertainties of life. Don’t be moved at the reports of fear and danger all around us. Jesus said be of good cheer for I have overcome the world. He is the living word. Acting on the word is allowing the one who overcame the world to live through you and act through you. You would surely prevail.

CONFESSION

God’s word is living and active. I give the word access in my life to function fully. I prevail over all mountains that I face. Defeat is far from me because I have made the word my delight and meditate on it day and night.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Acts 19:15 ” And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?”

These sons of Sceva in their bid to cast out the devil in Jesus name who Paul preaches, had   the demons saying to them, Jesus I know and Paul I know but who are you? The two words used as ‘know’ for Jesus and that for Paul have different meanings: the word translated ‘know’ used in the case of the Lord Jesus is “ginosko” which means “to be certain about” and the ‘know’ used in reference to Paul is “espitamai” and means ‘to place the mind’ or’ to consider’. That statement may be said this way, for Jesus I dread him and Paul I consider him but who are you”.

Every child of God must be on the mind of the demons of hell. You should matter to them. You should be involved in destroying their kingdom such that you are a consideration to them. Such was Apostle Paul. Those sons of Sceva did not mean anything to the forces of wickedness. The demon asked, who are you? The demon through the one man bounced on the seven boys and beat them up. What kind of lifestyle makes a man a real consideration to the demons of hell? A life which is sold out to the master. In such a person the Lord has the final word. Please get this point clear it is not just getting busy or occupied with godly things like prayer or even preaching, but the man whose will and ambition is to please the master. One may be very prayerful, yet his life focus is purely carnal. Some maybe involved in evangelism yet the reason is to get people into the church just to feel good in comparing their church to other churches. Let the Lord have you in all that you do and not you using Him to get what you want.

The centurion who came to Jesus asking healing for his servant said because I am a man under authority and so I have authority (Matthew 8:9). He said I say to this servant go and he goes. We can’t exercise great authority over demons when we do not truly honor our master.

What happened to these sons of Sceva became known to the whole city and there was a great fear of God. Many came to know Jesus through this event. Kenneth Hagan said the manifestation of the supernatural is dinner bell that rallies all to dinning.

Christianity without the supernatural is just a human institution.

KEY SCRIPTURE: ACTS 19:13. Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, we adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.

In the above verse some vagabonds or aimless youths decided to cast out a demon in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches. They were siblings, and were seven in all. They knew not the Lord. It is rather pathetic for anyone to impose himself or herself as a child of God.

Some people who called themselves pastors or any other title have found themselves in trouble trying to cast out demons. I have encountered people who got paralyzed, because they tried casting out a demon. Why does such a thing happen to people who are supposed to be children of God.

We would first consider the scriptural provisions concerning these things. The Lord Jesus said to the disciples and to us that, He has given us power to trample upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt us. [Luke 10:19]. The Lord also said one of the signs that would follow them who would believe in Him is that they would cast out devils. [Mark 16:17]. In Matt 10:1. The Lord Jesus also gave the disciples authority over all devils and to heal all manner of diseases. If we have such authority over all devils why does some ‘Christians’ encounter such problems?

I would say that, the first reason for such a problem happening is that these people may not know the Lord Jesus. Jesus is the Lord of anyone who has believed in Him. If the Lord Jesus is not Lord over the life of any man or woman, then he or she is deceiving himself or herself. Becoming a Christian is to receive the kingdom of God into your heart. Jesus becomes your king and you become His servant. In the mind of the Father, you are a son.

One of the reasons why people encounter problems with demons is lack of knowledge of the word of God. The bible says my people are destroyed for lack of Knowledge, {Hosea 4:6}. Knowledge is light and knowledge is power. If you have light and power no darkness can ever molest you. Faith is a product of knowledge of God’s word, and it is faith that also releases God’s power to deal with the devil

Those sons of Sceva were casting out the demons out of pride. Pride is a projection of self-interest over the Lord’s. A number of people get into trouble because of pride, doing it to project their selfish ambition or image and not to bring glory to the Lord. Dear child of God , now to the Lord belongs the KINGDOM, the POWER, and the GLORY .whatever you do ,submit to His dominion, that is acknowledging the reign of the kingdom over your life, and secondly recognize His power that is at work in you, and then finally that all glory goes to His name. With such an approach you would never be over powered by devils.

CONFESSION

I am a child of God, born by the Spirit of God. I am submitted to the Lordship of Jesus. It is always His Glory that is at stake. I am therefore superior to every devil and in the name of Jesus I cast out every devil and they will obey me.
