CHARACTER STUDY: MOSES 41

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 32:11 ” And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?”

(Read. Exodus 32:1–35)

The children of Israel broke the law of God by making a golden calf to worship it. The Lord decides to destroy all of them. In Exodus 32:10 he said “Now let me alone that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them and I will make of thee a great nation”. The Lord said Moses should permit Him to destroy the whole of the children of Israel. Why did He say so? Why didn’t He just go ahead and destroyed them.

From the creation of man, the rule of the earth was given to man. (Genesis 1:26-28). God can only act, do anything on the earth upon man’s invitation. He is the owner of all things yet He has given the right to rule the earth to man. Genesis 1:26  “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have DOMINION over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth”.

Man was given DOMINION over “all the earth”. This gives a great responsibility to us.

A lot of things that go on around us depends on us, what we do or fail to do. Secondly this is also the reason for prayers. Until men pray God will not intervene. People should not blame God for allowing certain evils to go on, on the earth. The responsibility lies on the children of God to consistently stand in the gap and make intercessions on behalf of the people of the earth. Luke 18:1” And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;” To have the hand of God in your affairs always you need to pray always.

Moses interceded for the children of Israel. Moses was in no way a selfish man. He never sought for a name for himself, although the Lord said, He would wipe all men and raise a new generation after him.

During Moses intercession he brought out arguments why the Lord must not destroy the Israelites. Moses used God’s own words to argue on behalf of the Israelites. In our prayers we must say what God’s word says about the situation.

In verse 19 when Moses got to the camp his anger burnt so much that he broke the tablets of the law beneath the mountain. He could not control his anger. He prayed God would have mercy yet he could not control his temper. We always need God’s ability to act appropriately always. Moses made sure that the camp of the Israelites was sanctified by destroying all those who had chosen idolatry. Although he interceded for them, he did not compromise with their sin.

 PRAYER

I pray for world evangelism and the salvation of souls. May the Lord break the deception of the devil over the minds of them who believe not the gospel, in the name of our Lord Jesus.

CHARACTER STUDY: MOSES 40

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 24:4 And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

Read Exodus 24:1-18

In this passage we see Moses show great commitment unto God. The Lord asked him to come along with Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and seventy of the elders who worshipped God from some distance off.  Moses was asked to come alone closer to God. He returned to the people and rehearsed all the words in their ears. He copied all that God said to him, rising up early to build an alter unto the Lord.

In all these we see a man who’s dedicated to God and the assignment God gave him. Our Lord Jesus when he walked on this earth showed that He was extremely dedicated to doing the will of God to the letter. He says in John 4:34 as follows “My meat is to do the will of Him that sent me and to finish it”. The Lord Jesus as early as twelve years revealed to His earthly parents that in Luke 2:49 that “……. How is it that you sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my father’s business? In John 4:34 he meant, that which gives Him pleasure for living is to do that which I was sent to do.

We the children of God have all been sent to fulfil a task. John 17:18 “As thou has sent me into the world even so have, I also sent them into the world”. The Lord is saying that we have been sent just as the father sent Him. We must have the same attitude He had. Before the Lord Jesus was raised up into heaven, he commissioned all his disciples to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations. (Matthew 28:19,20). Many of us are simply at ease in Zion”. Amos 6:1. Dear child of God the Lord believes in you, that is why he has entrusted such a work into your hands. You can’t afford to fail. Arise out of your sleep and be committed to the master’s commission. Apostle Paul says, “woe is me if I preach not the gospel. ‘Woe’ is an exclamation of grief or danger. You got to see how dangerous it is not to do the work of God. In Romans 1:14 Apostle Paul says “I am debtor both to the Greeks and to the Barbarians; both to the wise and to the unwise”. What a great spiritual man.

May this awareness and burden come on all children of God.

 PRAYER

Oh God, Open the eyes of all your children to understand the magnitude of their commission.

CHARACTER STUDY: MOSES 39

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 20:2 ” I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.”

This study is not dealing directly about the character of Moses but has a lot to teach us. We would be looking at the ten commandments as given to Moses.

John 1:17 says, ” For the law was given by Moses but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ”. This verse gives a sharp contrast about the law and grace in relation to their sources. Moses gave the law but Jesus brought grace and truth. What then is the relationship between grace and the law? These two principles are all seeking for men to relate to God acceptably, but the law falls short of making provisions to make one acceptable before God. The laws make demands from men, whiles grace makes provision. The first commandment states that, “thou shall have no other gods before me”. It tells or commands us not to serve any other god but the Lord God alone. The sad truth is that most men or women fail, when it comes to obeying these commandments. Idolatry is the number one sin of humans. (Note: Idolatry is anything that takes the place of God in our lives).

It is only the grace of God that makes us free from falling short of these laws. What is the grace of God? The grace of God is first and foremost a person. The grace of God is our Lord Jesus taking over a man’s heart to express Himself through that man. Grace is the source of perfection. The grace of God takes the attention from ourselves to Christ. We can’t fall short to any of these laws when the grace of God is fully functioning in us. Romans 6:14 “Sin shall not have dominion over you because you are not under the law but under grace”.

To be under grace means you acknowledge that it is Christ at work in you and He does everything through you. He becomes the centre of your love, and the target of your praise. There is then no place for idolatry if Jesus is the Centre of your love as well as the target of your praise. Every one of the nine commandments would not be a struggle to do when Jesus is working through you. To make this statement in another sense, ‘when the grace of God is working in you, you would not struggle to fulfill these laws.

May we say with apostle Paul, I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.

 CONFESSION

It is no longer I that lives, but it is Christ alive in me. My life is a manifestation of His works, that produces victory and excellence in all I do.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 19:13 There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.

After three months of their journey to the promised land. The Lord called on Moses to come up to the mountain. The Lord commanded Moses to instruct the children of Israel to sanctify themselves because he would be speaking to the whole congregation. Moses instructed them never to touch the mountain. These people were not to touch the mountain because God had come on the mountain. His presence on the mountain meant it had become Holy. Exodus 19:13. The bible teaches we are the temple of God and God lives in us. If God came unto a mountain which cannot be touched because it had become a Holy mountain, why are we the temple of God yet we look so ordinary. Many of us do not recognize we are very pure as God, because His presence in us gives us the very Holiness of God. We can only transmit the impact of His presence to the world around us, when we relate to Him with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). 1st Corinthians 3:16 “know ye not that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you”.

Many of us look ordinary because we do not recognise the magnitude of power that we carry. Many of us have become so accustomed with the life of the world around us  ,and so  we live just like them. Many Christians fear what they fear. A lot more just live like the way people who have no faith in God do.

When Christians acknowledge the magnitude of the power and glory that resides in them and begin to talk, act from the point of view of the greatest power residing in them, then they would continually be a  manifestation of the power of God.

In 2nd Samuel 5:1-7, the Philistines took custody of the Ark of God and placed it in Dagon’s room. Dagon was their chief God. On the next morning Dagon had fallen  down facing   the Ark of God. They raised it up locating it at it’s proper place. By the following day Dagon was not only on the ground but the arms and legs were broken from the body.  This is a wooden box which carried God’s presence. Dear child of God you have been sanctified by the blood of Jesus, bought by His blood and God lives in you. Do not live as an ordinary person. Acknowledge that the greater one lives in you and you cannot be molested by demons and any evil power.Your life must torment the Devils instead.

          CONFESSION

I am the living Ark of God, for God lives presently in me.My life is a special kind ,bearing the very Holiness of God and manifesting the great power of God.I am a terror to the evil powers of this life and no evil power can harm me in Jesus name.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 18:14 And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, what is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sitteth thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?”

Jethro the priest of Midian and Moses father in law heard of all that God had done for Moses and the people of Israel. The Bible said Jethro came with Moses’ wife and his two sons whom he sent back to Midian. Why did Moses send them to Midian? The Bible does not give any specific reason or reasons yet one could speculate. Moses was the main man who challenged Pharaoh and the kingdom of Egypt. If Moses could not be touched or attacked by Pharaoh, his wife and sons could be attacked. The best way to protect them was to send them back to Midian. Do you remember the Lord Jesus in his infancy was sent to Egypt by his parents so he could escape from the attack of Herod?

Every man of God involved in cutting edge ministries that stops the works of evil must seek for ways to protect their children who may be vulnerable. Do not expose your children to certain conditions that Satan could attack them. Don’t leave them in the care of some people you can’t trust. Always plead the blood of our Lord Jesus over their lives. Above all spend time interceding for them. They are access for the devil to attack you. Don’t give Satan that opportunity.

During Jethro’s visit with Moses, he saw that Moses took his seat as scores of people stood by with cases to be judged by him. Moses sat down from morning to evening. Jethro saw that Moses would wear himself down, and would likewise wear the people down. He said to him “This thing you are doing is not good”. Exodus 18:17. He advised him to look out for able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness and place them to be rulers over thousand, rulers over hundred, rulers over fifties and rulers over ten.

The qualifications of such men were to be:

1.Have the ability to rule

2.Men of very high morals.

These qualities are what we should look out for in our leaders that we appoint. Having the ability or know how is very important. The other important quality is having good morals. The moral aspect is the failure of African leaders. Politicians describe being in power as “good times”. Good times means having money at your disposal. Most appointees of every political party in power leave the governance as very rich people. Why is this so? They come into power to amass wealth, not to selflessly serve people We must look out for the moral impeccability of candidates before electing them or appointing them into offices.

PRAYER

Father raise sincere men to lead our Nations.

CHARACTER STUDY: MOSES 36

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 17:11 ” And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.”

When the people of Israel were resting at Rephidim the Amalekites came and fought them.

In this encounter Moses asked Joshua to gather men and fight the Amalekites. He decided to go up the mountain and lift up the rod of the Lord before Him. Moses demonstrated that, there are two sides to every life encounter. There is a physical side and there is the spiritual side. Each aspect must be approached with all seriousness.

Joshua fought the Amalekites physically, but Moses was waging a spiritual warfare. He lifted up the rod of God before Him. When His hands remained up Israel was winning, when his hands got tired and weak, so it dropped, Israel started losing. This meant the spiritual holds sway over the natural. When his hands got tired Aaron and Hur supported him by holding Moses hands. This event teaches us that leaders are not Supermen; they need some support to sustain the victory and success of the whole body and organization. There are various helps that could be given to leaders to keep the body functioning well. They need the prayer support of the members 1st Timothy 2:1-2. They need the financial support as well Galatians 6:7, and many other ways of holding their hands up.

Joshua and his men did their best to fight the Amalekites yet their victory depended on whether Moses’ hands were up or not. Every spiritual leader is an automatic intercessor. A pastor who does not spend enough time to pray for his congregation would be calling for lots and lots of trouble. Your intercession should not be a thirty-minute prayer time. You must prevail in your prayers. There are all forms of demonic activities that Satan projects over the life of the congregation. There are a lot more people who must be won unto the fellowship of the saints. Your intercessions would do a lot, yet, let us understand that Aaron and Hur were also supporting Moses in his intercessory business.

Don’t leave the task of intercession to the pastor alone. Other members, leaders and even the congregation must be involved in interceding for the advancement of the gospel in their midst.

 PRAYER

Oh God raise men and women who will be great intercessors.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 17:2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

The Israelites continued with their journey to the promised land as they got to Rephidim where there was no water. The scripture said their journeys were commanded by the Lord. How come that God led them to a place where there was no water? In our previous studies we realize that these people continuously encounter one problem after another. Why does God who was leading them allow these situations to come their way? PLEASE GET THIS TRUTH ONCE AND FOR ALL, THE GREATEST LESSON, THAT GOD WOULD WANT HIS CHILDREN TO LEARN IS TO KNOW HIM.

Apostle Paul says in Philippians 3:10a “that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection……”. This was after so many years of fellowshipping and experiencing the dealings and workings of God in his life. Daniel 11:32b also enlightens us that “…. but the people that do know their God shall be strong and do exploits”. Knowing in this context also means to get acquainted with God. It also means knowing who God is and how he does his things. Anyone who comes into such knowledge cannot be defeated and would never fret under any situation.

Dear child of God, challenges would never stop coming your way. God would allow them to come your way. They offer you opportunities to trust God and see his power and wisdom. (Romans 8:28). God does not lead us into temptations any way. James 1:13 “let no man say, when he is tempted: I am tempted of God. For God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempts He any man”. Remember that to be tempted means to be prompted to do evil. God will not and cannot prompt anyone to do evil.

Did the Israelites learn the lesson of knowing God? No, they did not. Listen to what they said Exodus 17:3 “And the people thirsted there for water and the people murmured against Moses, and said, wherefore is this that thou has brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst? These people consistently spoke about themselves, their children, their cattle. They were occupied with themselves. WE CAN ONLY KNOW THE POWER OF GOD BY TRUSTING OUR LIVES AND FUTURE INTO HIS HANDS. WE CAN’T KNOW HIM IF WE GET SO CONCERNED WITH OURSELVES.

   CONFESSION

I trust God with my life. He is a faithful God and honours His word in my life continually. I know Him and therefore, I do not fret at anything.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 16:20 ” Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.”

Moses from the beginning of his calling has been very consistent with whatever God told him. He took time to get what God was instructing him, so he would do just that.

In our passage Moses gave them instructions on how to collect and use the manna. He asked them not to collect above some amount. Some obeyed but a number of them disobeyed. Those who disobeyed and collected more than what they were told had the leftovers becoming worms. Most of man’s troubles are as a result of neglect of the word of God. The word of God is perfect, it converts the soul. The testimony of God is sure making wise the simple. The commandment of the Lord is pure enlightening the eyes. PS 19:7–9). Human experience is full of failures and defeats. The reason is simple, men do not obey the simple instructions of scripture. 2nd Timothy 3:16,17 reads “All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be perfect thoroughly furnished unto every good work. The import of the scripture is to make the child of God perfect thoroughly equipped unto every good work. If men would be diligent to do what God says life would not produce ‘worms’ and ‘maggots.’

In Exodus 16:29, Moses instructed the Jews to take a double of what they used to collect at the other times. This was to be used on the Sabbath day. They were not to go for any manna on the Sabbath day. During this incident, what was left for the next day did not grow worms.

Once again, we learn that relating with God is to trust Him for whatever He says. The just shall always live by faith. Isaiah 55:8-9 reads “For my thoughts are not your thoughts neither are your ways my ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. It is the word of God which gives us God’s thoughts and His ways. Without His word man is lost in his own confusion. He says His thoughts produces the best of results in every endeavor in life. To lead a great and successful life just resolve to submit to God’s word in everything you do.

In Exodus 16:26, the Bible said some of the Israelites went out on the Sabbath day to gather some manna and found none. The Lord asked Moses how long would these people refuse to disobey God’s word. This is rebellion and stubbornness. They were disappointed in their disobedience. This should teach us a lot of lessons. Anytime we disobey God’s word we would be disappointed no matter how wise our actions may be.

May we always humble ourselves before God, to do exactly as He says, so we may avoid failure and disappointments.

CONFESSION

I have the understanding of the just and escape the path of fools for I submit my life and actions totally to God’s word. I live in the Spirit and therefore I’m filled with peace and joy always.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 16:3 ” And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

(Pls read Exodus 16 :1–36)

The children of Israel murmured against Moses because they had no food in sight to eat. They murmured and spoke abominably to Moses and Aaron. These people who cried under the horrible treatment the Egyptian task masters gave to them, said, it would have been better they died in Egypt. Why couldn’t these Jews consider any of the mighty works of God, to show a little trust in Him? These people were self-centered. No man can express any trust in God if he is self-centered.

The bible described these people as not entering into their rest.( rest ,is a state of peace and confidence, knowing that everything is under control) Hebrews 4:2 reads “For unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them but the word preached did not profit  them not being missed with faith in them that heard it”. We are also warned to be cautious not to fail to enter into God’s rest. God’s intention for every child of His inspite of whatever he or she may be experiencing is to live a life of rest or to be at peace with himself. It is only in a state of a peace of mind and heart that God works to bring to pass His perfect will and intention for His children.

In Exodus 16:4 the Lord responded to the position of these complaining Israelites by saying he would rain bread from heaven for them. He instructed on the procedure for their collection of this bread. The Lord answered these people and gave them manna although they were in doubt and unbelief. Why did He do so since it was against His general principle of doing things for people who had no faith in Him? The Lord brought manna not as an answer to the complains and murmuring of the people but as an answer to the faith of Moses and Aaron. (Exodus 16:6).

God has stated throughout the counsel of scripture that he responds to the faith of men. Hebrews 11:6 ” But without faith it is impossible to please God, for he that comes to God must believe that he is, and   that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. “. Life from God’s point of view should not be stressful and miserable but through trust in the word of God man will lead a life of rest and peace although he may be faced with challenging times. Man cannot live without challenges   but God has planned a life of peace and rest that makes us live above every one of  these challenges  through faith or trust in Him.1 John 5:4 ” For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”

CONFESSION

God’s word is the light that leads me in this life, it is the key that opens every door I face, it is the medicine that heals every ailment that attacks me, and the best counsel for every decision I have to make. I am a winner in this life because I live by God’s word.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 15:22 ” So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.”

After the joy and celebration of their victory over Egypt, they were faced with another challenge of faith. This time there was no drinking water. The Christian life is a walk with God. Walking with God is a school of learning about God and how He relates with His children. God is invincible to the natural eyes. It takes faith to get Him into the affairs of our life. Challenges of life as they come our way are in no way dangers or matters to destroy us from our Father’s point of view. Not so with the devil. He intends to destroy you, so stand with God. They are simply the schooling process of getting to know and experience God. God’s idea of passing his children through these processes brings his children into a state of knowledge that nothing becomes a problem to them anymore. This is how apostle James put it. James 1:2-4 “My brethren count it all joy when you fall into divers’ temptations knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire wanting nothing”.

Please did you see why these challenges come.?  The ultimate state that our beloved father wants you to come into, is that, you would want nothing. When a man gets to know God, he would no more fret about any need.

In our story, Moses led the people from the Red sea and for 3 days, they had no water. After the third day, they came across water but it was bitter. The bible said, the people murmured against Moses saying. What shall we drink.? Please note: the word murmur means in the Hebrew to lodge, stop over, or abide. It simply means the man who is murmuring has stopped moving with God but stuck to wherever he or she has decided to be. Their action put a lot of pressure on Moses. Moses could have focused on their pressure and gotten despair. Many challenges put a lot of pressure on us. They turn to make us focus on the problem. Moses did not focus on them, He rather turned to God and asked for help or solution. The Lord showed Him a tree which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet.

Out of this incident the Lord said to Moses to tell the whole of Israel that if they would only trust Him and hold diligently to his word, they would never have any of the diseases He put (allowed) on the Egyptians for He is the Lord our Healer.
