YOUR INTEGRITY WOULD SPEAK FOR YOUR GENERATIONS AFTER YOU.

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Sam 7:15 KJV” But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.”

A friend once asked, King Saul did not kill the king of Amalek and also kept the fattened animals, but God rejected him instantly. King David committed adultery and murder, yet God accepted him and even established an everlasting covenant of perpetual reign of his family line in Israel. Dear reader, let us understand that every man can fall in one way or the other. The question is, how much does one fear the Lord? King Saul’s offence might appear less serious than that of David, but the ultimate actions of Saul showed a man who was so egoistic and had no fear of God in any way. He consistently fought the will of God, in pursuing David to kill him. By this action, he was violently opposing God. God sees the depth of a man’s heart.

David committed adultery and murder, yet he humbly acknowledged his offence, repented, and never went that path any longer. Just consider the way he mourned King Saul and his family. On two occasions, he had the opportunity to kill Saul, but because of God’s word, he did not kill him. He did not directly fight in the war against the house of King Saul. David made sure he consulted God on every major decision of his life. David placed his absolute trust in the Lord. Psalms 20:7 KJV “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God”. Most of the Psalms were songs written by David to express his deep love and reverence for the Lord. David was described as pure as an angel. His great submission to God brought him amazing victories throughout his reign as king. All these set him up as a man of integrity. Let’s consider God’s testimony of David. 1 Kings 9:4 KJV” And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments:”

I believe the Lord is making this statement to us also. That, if you would walk in integrity of heart, and in all uprightness, to do all that He the Lord has commanded in His word, to keep all His statutes and judgement. If you would do this, then your posterity or future lineage would enjoy the eternal mercies of God. God is faithful and the same yesterday, today, and forever. Ps 119:89, 90 says “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.” What He did for one He would do for all who honour His word.

CONFESSION

I thank you, my dear father, for your faithfulness to all generations. I live daily by your word, with a great reverence for you. I continually place my trust in you and my life. My seed after me is blessed as the Lord extends this blessing unto a thousand generations.

UNSELFISH THOUGHTS

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 7:2” That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, see now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains”.

When the Lord had given David peace all around him, he thought about God and where the Ark of God dwelt. Good thoughts about others are always appreciated. It is a grand nature of men to be selfish, especially when things go well with them. In such times, they forget about the plight of the underprivileged. Many people get engrossed in their pleasure when all is well with them. Some Christians backslide because they have a good job, a good marriage, a fashionable house, and what have you? They hardly think about God or go to church services regularly. Remember, what can a man give in exchange for His Soul?

For King David, it was at the height of his comfort and stability that he thought about God and His house. How much are you concerned about God and His work? David said he dwells in a Cedar wood house and God lives in curtains (2nd Sam 7:2)

When King David discussed this issue with Nathan the prophet, he said to him Go ahead and do all that is in your heart. In Nathan’s dream, God said a lot of good things about David, yet he would not want him to build the house for him. His son would rather build it. Before the Lord spoke to Nathan, he told David to go ahead and do that which was in his heart, but after the encounter with God, he knew what God wanted. It is always proper to be sure of what God is saying rather than to assume anything for Him.

God normally addresses people by their names. It is only those who have won His heart that he qualifies them by the term ‘MY SERVANT’. (2nd Sam 7;5) Many men of God seek to pride themselves with all kinds of titles. Please note, there is only one title that God loves to address those who are dear unto Him. It is the word SERVANT. The word servant implies a slave, one who lives to please his master. Strive to be called a servant by God Himself. Men may see you as a servant of God, or you may call yourself that way, yet it is only God who can tell whether a man is His servant or not.

David’s desire to honor God with a house moved God to say so many wonderful things about him. God spoke about establishing his Kingdom forever (2nd Sam 7:13&16) He even added that if his son, who will succeed him, sins, He will chastise him with the rod of men.

Dear child of God you can also attract a great favor to yourself. Delight yourself in the things of God and take pleasure in honoring Him. Go out of your way and make great sacrifices for Him, and seek the establishment of His Kingdom There is no way your life would not be singled out for an uncommon blessing if you live this way.

  PRAYER

Oh! Father, open the understanding of all Christians to the realities of honoring God with their lives and the uncommon favors that go with it. Let the church take its rightful place on the earth.

Matthew 6:33” But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”.

1 Samuel 2:30 “Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me forever: but now the LORD saith, be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

BEWARE OF CARNALITY

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 6:21 “And David said unto Michal, it was before the LORD, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore, will I play before the LORD”.

The ark of the Lord finally got to Jerusalem amidst praises, songs with instrumentation. King David wore a linen Ephod. The linen material was very light and so could not easily generate sweat, which normally created a foul smell. This garment was worn by the priest as a symbol of purity.

King David was totally given to God. He only focused on the Lord and how to express his praise and worship to the highest degree. The king danced, praised God to the degree that he was almost naked, yet he cared less about it.

In 2nd Samuel 6:16, the scriptures said Michal, David’s wife, looked through the window, seeing how David was dancing and leaping before the Lord, despised him in her heart.

In the church of God, many people just go as spectators and not participants. They stare at those who are “crazily” dancing or prostrating on the floor, and they castigate such people in their minds. This is rather dangerous, as we studied in our previous lesson that the power of God does not determine who to bless or who is to be cursed. It is always the condition of your heart that determines. Michal was not praising the Lord. She rather despised a man who was busily praising the Lord.

When David finally settled at home, Michal did not keep her thoughts to her head but went ahead and expressed them to David. Thoughts could be our own creation, suggestions from demons, or from the Spirit of God that we feed on. Thoughts in the head do not become authentic or something established in the realms of the spirit until they are spoken out of the mouth. (Romans 10:9-10). She said the king uncovered himself in the eyes of the handmaidens of his own servants as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovered himself. Her words seriously implicated her. (2nd Samuel 6:20). This woman was very fleshly or carnally minded. She saw nothing spiritual about all that transpired. Note that carnality is always death, and spirituality is always life. David answered her that God chose him in place of his father and all Israel, and so he would “play” before the Lord. To play means he would make himself nothing. Dear child of God, never make yourself somebody before God. Whenever you stand to worship Him, acknowledge that It is the Lord alone that matters. Your goal in worship must only please Him and not you or another person.

*God’s anger came on Michal, and she was barren till death. Never despise a deed done for the Lord.

 CONFESSION

I am committed to lifting His name in all I do. My life is for the Lord and I would give my praise and worship to honour Him alone.

HONOUR GOD ON HIS TERMS

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Chronicles 13:3” And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we enquired not at it in the days of Saul”.

David brought various leaders and commanders of thousands and suggested to them the need to bring back the Ark of God to where the king dwelt. Please note that great leadership in the affairs of God is to be focused on that which exalts the name of God. David was exceedingly committed to doing things that pleased and honoured God.

David rallied together about thirty thousand people. The large number of people is a sign of how serious David recognises this step, as well as showing the Lord his desire to honour and exalt Him.

The Ark was carried by a cart driven by two oxen and was guarded by two men, Uzzah and Ahio.  The rest of Israel rejoiced and praised the Lord, singing, dancing with music. When the oxen decided to take some grass at the threshing floor, the Ark nearly fell, and so Uzzah stretched his hand to support the Ark, but God’s anger burned against him and slew him. David was angry with God and was also very afraid of Him, Beloved. Our God is fearful. Uzzah was not a priest or a Levite. Why was he allowed to take care of the ark in the first place? Always know the right thing and do it.  God works with principles, not with the faces of men.

David, out of fear, took the Ark to the house of Obed-edom, who was a Levite. The Bible said, Obededom’s house was blessed because of the presence of the Ark. To Uzzah, he was slain, but to Obededom, he and his household were blessed. To the fleshly person, it is death, but to the spiritual man, it is life and blessings. It is not God who determines whether His power becomes life or death to a man. It is the heart condition of the individual. In the dispensation of grace, faith is the only ground that justifies us.

In 2nd Samuel 6:13, King David now went for the Ark from Obededom’s house. David sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf whenever the bearers of the ark took six steps. This time, the bearers of the ark were Levites, and it was not put on a cart. Since the days of Moses and Joshua, the ark had always been borne by the Levites and never on a cart. It was the Philistines who first placed the Ark on a cart driven by oxen. (1st Sam 6:11) NEVER USE WORLDLY WAYS FOR GOD’S THINGS.

The Levites were people set apart to serve the things of God. They were symbols of holiness. Everything about God must be approached in Holiness. Please note that HOLINESS UNTO GOD IS NOT JUST WHAT YOU DO BUT WHAT YOU DO AS A RESULT OF YOUR FAITH IN GOD.  One may do without believing and miss God, but the man who believes what God has said has his influence from God.

  CONFESSION

I live in the Spirit by faith, and therefore receive an abundance of God’s blessings. I do not struggle to experience His favours, for as I live in the spirit. The blessings come from the Spirit.

THE ENEMY NEVER GIVES UP

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Sam 5:17 KJV” But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.”

After David had been crowned king over the whole of Israel, he had barely organised himself to set up an administrative structure when the Philistines set themselves up in battle array to attack him. This time, too, David was the reason for their attack. Satan’s agenda is to make him feel desperate and to give up on what God has ⁹asked him to do. Remember, he’s been anointed for over a decade. Dear one, are you caught up in repeated battles upon battles? This is the time to praise the Lord.

Every challenge offers you the opportunity to become a champion.

At this point in David’s life, he never said I have experienced these things over and over, so I know what to do. He went to the Lord for guidance 2 Sam 5:19 KJV “And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.” David was very specific about what he wanted from the Lord.

He asked two main questions. Shall I go up against the Philistines?

Would you deliver them into my hands? David knew his God was the judge and controller of everything. He was never worried or afraid. Dear child of God, do not panic at any problem you face. The solution and final results lie in your heavenly father’s hands. Trust Him and follow what His word says. David was assured of victory, so he went and conquered.

These Philistines came back again after this defeat to fight David again. Once again, stop thinking of yourself as the one being attacked. The attacks are coming because of the word of God over your life. It is an attempt by the devil to stop what God has planned concerning you. All you need is to KEEP COOPERATING WITH THE LORD. This time round, the Lord asked David to use another approach to fight and defeat the enemy. 2Sam 5:23 KJV “And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.” Dear one, once again, God, our Father, does not use one way to do everything. Each time and how, He would instruct His children to go about doing what He may want them to do.

In all these attacks of the enemy, please understand that they have not arisen to destroy you. God has allowed them to bring glory to His name, but a blessing to you.

CONFESSION

Thank you, Father, for your continual help and presence to deliver me from every problem. I consistently trust and submit to your instructions to always come out victorious. Amen

LIVING IN GOD’S PERFECT WILL

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Sam 5:4 KJV “David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years”.

The above scripture gave some figures which may appear insignificant, yet they mean a lot. I will not go into full numerology, that is the study of numbers and their significance, for now. This would be for another time. David became king at the age of thirty. In Israel, thirty is the full age at which any son is considered to reach full adulthood. This is the age when he is adopted as a son or the word son placing. Gal 4:1 KJV” Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.” From these verses, a son has a period set by the Father where he is no longer a child but becomes a son. At this age, he has the right to his father’s estate. The term used is adoption, which is ‘ uihothesia’ in Greek and is explained as son placing. This is the age of thirty years. In the scriptures, some individuals who functioned in God’s perfect will began their life careers at age thirty. Examples are Joseph and our Lord Jesus.

The Bible also said, he reigned for forty years in all. Forty is normally God’s longsuffering as well as his normal full term for his children to play their roles. In light of this, we saw the Israelites going through the wilderness for forty years; most of the men who fasted to God’s full term did so for forty days. It rained for forty days and forty nights. The Lord revealed himself alive to his disciples for forty days, and the children of Israel ate manna for 40 years. Forty was God’s perfect timing for him to reign.

David decided to please the Lord throughout his lifetime. Although he fell into adultery and murder, he quickly repented and never went into any such act again.

He walked upright before the Lord. David never lost a battle. David was the only king who crowned his successor king. He died a very natural death with no sickness in his body. God has stated that if a man will live upright, he shall be filled with many days and a very fruitful life. The Lord gave the following promise to Joshua, and it also happened for David. Jos 1:5 KJV” There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Dear brother, the Lord Jesus said, What I say to one I say to all. This promise is for you today. Decide to live daily upright before Him, and your life will have only perfect endings.

CONFESSION

Thank you, heavenly Father, for your great love and power. I have chosen to walk in absolute submission to you all the days of my life. I know you are ever present with me and I will continue to win in every life contest.

WHEN YOU OVERCOME

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2Sa 5:1 KJV” Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.”

In life, our Father God permits various situations to test us for promotion, rewards, and total completeness. James 1:4 KJV “But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” Whereas God seeks our completeness, Satan comes to resist you, destroy, and prevent the will of God from coming to pass in your life. Well may we note that God does not use sicknesses to try us, just as He would not use sin to try us. These things oppose His word and will in our lives. The Lord called sickness the oppression of the devil, and so He was anointed to set men free from it (Acts 10:38)

Setting these things aside, our father expects us to overcome every trial that comes our way. There is always a moment of glory and honour when we have faithfully endured all the trials. When David overcame all the challenges that came his way, all the elders of the tribes of Israel came to him to crown him as King over the whole of Israel. Anything during the time of his trial could have made him give up. The pursuit of King Saul was so relentless to the point that he felt he could die at the hands of Saul.

Dear one, it is time for you to stand your ground to overcome. You are a born winner, 1 John 5:4 KJV For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Winning is your inheritance, for Jesus our master is a winner, and we live in His name. We share in His present states as He has overcome. There is an adequate provision for us to overcome. Our victory comes as we act on His word in absolute confidence. He has already assured us of His presence with us through water, fire and all dangers. He says these things would never overwhelm us. Isaiah 43:2

Let’s consider some of the things the Lord says about the one who would overcome.

Rev 2:7 KJV” He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.”

Rev 2:11 KJV” He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.”

NEVER AGREE WITH THAT WHICH IS WRONG

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 4:10 When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings:

Two gentlemen who were captains for Ishbosheth went into his chamber one afternoon and killed him. (2nd Sam.4:7& 8) They cut off his head and brought it to David, thinking King David would praise them for their effort.

King David never condoned wickedness. He asked his young men to slay these two men (2 Samuel 4:11-12)

All these deaths were God’s judgement on the household of Saul. They happened so the throne of David could be fully established without any resistance. The life of David teaches us something amazing. He never rejoiced over the death of any of the family members of Saul. David kept a clean heart devoid of bitterness. He allowed God to do what He, the Lord, would do, yet he (David) never gave room for bitterness. Dear child of God, your kind-heartedness towards your enemies would not stop God’s judgement and punishment for them if they don’t repent. Bitterness always places you cheaply in the hands of the enemy. Hebrews 12:15 reads “Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you and thereby many be defiled”

Bitterness in your heart will cause you to fail of the grace of God. This implies being devoid of supernatural assistance and provision. The man who expresses true love and kindness towards all men, even when he has been wrongly treated, always receives grace or divine supply to continue excelling.

Success in life is not necessarily having your way all the time, but playing it according to the right rules 2 Tim 2:5 KJV” And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.” God, the judge of all men, has rules of engagement in this life. Although the house of Saul stood vehemently against David, he would not support mischievousness of any kind. He had a clean heart towards God. Such an attitude always attracts lots of goodwill from God, as well as men, for you always reap what you sow. Remember the principle of giving and receiving as narrated by the master Jesus, in Luke 6:38″ Give and it shall be given unto you, good measure, pressed down shakened together, and running over shall men give into your blossom “Jesus the Lord taught that, you always receive a multiplied measure of what you give. David gave true love, fairness, and loyalty. This was multiplied to him in his lifetime. He was never killed by any close associate. If David had not lived by this principle, Absalom would have killed and dethroned him when his actions allowed the sword of judgement into his house.

MAINTAIN THIS PRINCIPLE FOR LIFE, i.e., I WOULD NEVER AGREE WITH THAT WHICH IS WRONG

PRAYER

Lord, I receive grace to act rightly all the time. I refuse to allow human advantage to incite me to choose the wrong way, in Jesus’ name.

WHEN GOD FIGHTS FOR YOU

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Sam 4:4 KJV And Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.

Please read 2 Sam 4:1-8

Throughout the scriptures, our Father God demonstrated that if His children would only trust in Him, He would fight all our enemies. Exo 14:14 KJV “The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” I realise as I study the story of David that he personally never fought in any war with the house of Saul. David showed great trust in the Lord.

On two occasions, he had the opportunity to strike King Saul while he helplessly slept, but David never did anything untoward. He was not going to attack one that has been anointed, and he also believed that one he’s been anointed to reign, nothing Satan does would prevent that from coming to pass. In spite of all the opposition he faced, God kept fighting for him. All he had to do was to trust in the Lord. May you learn to trust God’s word concerning you, knowing that His name is upon you, and so long as you permit Him, that is to place your trust in Him, you will NEVER be disappointed (Rom 10:11)

From our key scripture, the son of Jonathan suffered lameness as a result of an accident when the news of King Saul and Jonathan’s death reached them. In that same passage, Ishbosheth, the son of King Saul, was murdered in cold blood by his two very trusted men. Before the death of Ishbosheth, Abner, the general of King Saul’s Army, was killed by Joab. God’s word to place David on the throne had to be fulfilled. This would have occurred without the death of the people of the house of Saul, yet because of the actions of King Saul trying to fight the will of God, his family, himself, and some members of the tribe of Benjamin had to die.

Do not try resisting the will of God. Do not do it in your own life. The consequences may be too grievous. Never fight anyone who is fulfilling the will of God. It is not that man you are fighting, but God himself. The consequences may extend to extended members of your family. Jer 32:18 KJV Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name.

What must you do? Focus on doing that, which pleases Him, and keep trusting him. He would fight all those who seek to frustrate His purpose in your life.

CONFESSION

I am never moved by what the enemy or any man does against me. My focus is doing that which pleases the Father, and continually trusting Him to fulfil His word in my life.

WHEN TELLING THE TRUTH BECOMES EVIL

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Sam 3:23 KJV” When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.”

(PLEASE READ 2 SAM 3:15–39)

Abner, after a long period of resisting David from becoming king, finally decided to make peace with David. He contacted some of the elders of Israel to suggest that they accept David as King. From there, he met with David to finalise the whole program with him. After he had left, Joab came with his men back from a military expedition. The first report he heard from those who were present when Abner came to see King David was 2Sa 3:23 KJV “……Abner, the son of Ner, came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.” Just consider the words of these people. They told the truth but with an evil intention.

These people were simply mischievous. They knew Joab’s words about Abner concerning the death of Asahiel, his brother. This gave Joab a clue about Abner. The end of that story was that Abner, who had sought to create peace in Israel, was killed in cold blood. The hand of the men who reported Abner was actively involved in his murder.

Did anyone ask them any questions about Abner? They were simply playing the devil’s advocate. These were men with evil intentions. They simply wanted Abner to die, and they had their wishes done.

Beloved brother or sister, what kind of influence are you having on others?

Do you give sincere comments, or are your words laden with evil undercurrents? Some marriages have dissolved as a result of certain people with an evil eye.

Truth is no truth if it is told with an evil wish. Dear one, never become an instrument for the misery of others, but rather seek to be an instrument for peace wherever you go. Please note that people who hate others hated themselves first. To love yourself is to accept God’s love for you, and so you can give love to others. If you are not able to love others, then you have not been able to accept God’s love for you. Free yourself from hatred for yourself by accepting God’s love for you, so you can truly love your neighbour as yourself.
