JESUS’ IDENTITY

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 8:42 KJV “Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.”

In our next series of studies, we will look at who Jesus is and what He said about Himself.

The true identity of our Lord Jesus keeps baffling many. Some say He was begotten of God, and so He is lower in nature, authority, and power than God the Father. Some also say He is an angel. They claim He is specifically angel Michael.

Jesus, Himself said so much about who He was. In the second part of our key scripture, He said He proceeds from the Father. The word ‘from’ is the Greek word ‘ek’, which also means ‘out of’. This fully agrees with John 1:18, which says He dwells in the bosom of the Father, and so comes out of His bosom. In what form or nature did He dwell in the bosom of the Father? John 1:1 reveals that He is the word of God. The eternal state of Jesus is that He is the word of God.

The word begotten is used in the sense of the word coming out of the Father and taking on flesh John 1:14. As the word comes from the Father, He has also been sent by the Father.

He is revealed again as the word of God in Rev 19:13 KJV. ” And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.” Jesus is the eternal word of God, and He is one, in authority, power, and stature as God. John put it this way. John 1:1 KJV “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” He then took on flesh to become a man, although He did not come in all the glory He had with the Father. Philippians 2:5-7. John 17:5 KJV “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.” He said the Father should glorify Him with the glory He had together with the Father from the beginning. He had the same glory as the Father.

It was the assignment to save mankind that made Him put down that glory to become a man and save men. Please consider the following verse.1Pet 1:2 KJV “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.” We see Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all working together for the redemption of mankind (This is the trinity operating here). We see the foreknowledge of the Father in the election, the Holy Spirit sanctifies, and the Son dies to save us with His blood.

When the Lord was on earth, He made statements like the Father is greater than the son, John 24:28, or it is the Father who determines times and seasons Acts 1:7. He made all these statements because He had put down His glory as God. Now He has that glory and functions fully as God.

CONFESSION

Jesus is God, He lived in eternity past as the word of God, and so He proceeded out of the Father to take on flesh and blood. He is one with the Father in power, authority, and wisdom.

THOUGHT: JESUS IS THE MYSTERY OF GOD EXPLAINED.

THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD 2

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 1:9 KJV: God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

God’s faithfulness should dominate the mind and the meditation of the people of God. Every attack, trial, or challenge the devil throws at the believer is to raise a barrier against the concept we have about the faithfulness of God. The Christian’s resilience against evil depends on how he or she is grounded in the concept of God’s faithfulness. Daniel faced the threat of being consumed by the ferocious lions because he had fully settled in his heart that God was faithful to His word. David accepted the challenge against Goliath because he was fully convinced of the faithfulness of God. God had promised in Joshua 1:5 that “There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” This promise from the mouth of the faithful becomes a solid ground to enter into any contest or battle.

In the new covenant, God affirms His FAITHFULNESS to us. He says ” Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19. Scripture abounds in illustrations of God’s faithfulness. He said, ” While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. Gen 8:22. Every year fulfills a fresh witness to God fulfilling this promise. In Gen 15, the Lord declared to Abraham, Thy seed shall be strangers in a land that is not theirs and shall serve them…But in the fourth generation, they shall come hider again. Although time passed, and centuries rolled away, God did not forget His promise but brought it to pass. In Exodus 12:41, “And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.” This prophecy happened to the very last word.

God is true, and His word is sure. He remains faithful in all His dealings with His people. No one ever trusted the Lord in vain. He says whosoever believes in Him will not be put to shame Rom 10:11. Once again, let every child of God know that faithfulness is an essential part of His divine character. Whenever you are tempted to doubt His faithfulness, please know that it is an attack on your very foundation of relating to God. Refuse every thought that suggests anything against God’s faithfulness.  Declare it audibly that God is faithful.

CONFESSION

Father, you are faithful. This I know and never will allow any contrary suggestion against this knowledge. Indeed, acknowledging your faithfulness is my liberty from the lies of the enemy. I am ever confident of victory always because I know you are very faithful.

THOUGHT: YOU WOULD EVER REMAIN VICTORIOUS IF YOU STICK TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD’S FAITHFULNESS.

THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD

KEY SCRIPTURE: Deut 7:9 KJV “Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations; “

Unfaithfulness is one of the most outstanding sins of these evil days. In the business world, a man’s word does not carry any weight, since it is dishonoured with ease. In the social world, marital infidelity abounds on every hand, the sacred bonds of marriage are broken with little regard as discarding an old garment. Men tend to become so unfaithful even to their vows to do certain things for themselves, to the point that, they do not believe their own words. Despite the extreme unfaithfulness amongst most men, how refreshing to learn and to know about the faithfulness of the Lord at all times and under all conditions.

Our key scripture reads, know therefore that the Lord thy God, He is God, the faithful God. This quality is essential to His being, without it He would not be God. For God to be unfaithful, is for Him to act against His nature, which is impossible.2 Timothy 2:13 assures us that God remains faithful and can’t deny himself. 2Ti 2:13 KJV” If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” Faithfulness is one of the glorious perfections of His being. Psalms 89:8 KJV” O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?” When God should take on flesh, the following was said about Him. Isaiah 11:5 KJV “And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.”

Everything about God is vast and incomparable. God never forgets, never fails, never falters, never forfeits His word. For every declaration, promise, and prophecy, the Lord has stood firmly by every engagement, of covenant, He would make good, for ” God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? “This should make you exclaim,” It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23.

CONFESSIONS

My God is the faithful God. He cannot deny Himself, for He can’t lie, since He does not change. Every promise He makes remains, yes, and Amen in Christ Jesus. I am ever at rest in Him despite what I see or feel. What He has said will prevail.

THOUGHT: GOD’S FAITHFULNESS GURANTEES OUR VICTORY ALWAYS.

THE HOLINESS OF GOD 2

KEY SCRIPTURE: Prov. 15:26 KJV ‘The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words”

We continue with our discussion on the Holiness of God. God as a holy God hates sin in all its forms. God loves everything which conforms to His law but rejects everything contrary to His laws. God’s word declares “The froward is an abomination to the LORD. (Proverb 3:32). And again, He says, the thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD. Prov 15:26. It follows that He must necessarily punish sin. Sin can no longer exist without demanding His punishment than it can without requiring His hatred for it. God has often forgiven sinners, but He never forgives sin. The sinner is only forgiven on the grounds of another having borne the punishment for ” without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sin”. (Heb 9:22). Therefore, we are told the Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries and He reserves wrath for His enemies (Nahum 1;2.)

For one sin, God banished our first parents from Eden. For one sin all the posterity of Canaan fell under a curse and it remains with them until now. Moses was stopped from going to the promised land, because of one sin. Thank God, in Christ, we have received a righteous nature to live above sin. Walk in that light.

Dear brother these examples should stir in you a holy anger against toying with sin. Do not allow this era of grace to be wrongly used to deceive yourself into experimenting with sin. Sin is a sinker. Our Lord Jesus was painfully punished on the cross, so sin would be taken away. Stay away from it.

Despite God’s holy anger against sin, the unregenerated do not believe in the Holiness of God. Their concept of His character is altogether one-sided. They fondly hoped His mercy would override everything. They think of a God patterned after their evil hearts. Hence, they continue in a course of mad folly. This is rather unfortunate and makes them oppose or hardened to God’s standards that give no room for compromise.

Sadly, there are some Christians who create such erroneous pictures of God, hoping that his mercies will keep overlooking their lustful pursuits. Well, the scriptures say we should not be deceived, for God cannot be mocked. Whatsoever a man sows, that shall He also reap. Gal 6:7. ” For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting”

PRAYER

Thank you, heavenly father, for your perfect nature of Holiness that teaches us to stay away from sin that kills everything it touches. Thank you for the power of your Spirit that has given to us your righteousness to live above sin.

THOUGHT; JESUS DIED BECAUSE OF OUR SINS, DO NOT LET SIN KILL YOU.

THE HOLINESS OF GOD

KEY SCRIPTURE:1Pet 1:16 KJV “Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”

We now consider another perfection of God. The holiness of God. This is a communicable attribute that He shares with His children. Heb 12:14 KJV” Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” Indeed without holiness, no man would even see or fellowship with Him. God is holy and demands that we His children are also holy.1 Peter1: 16. Rev 15:4 says “Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.” He only is independent, infinitely, immutably holy. In scripture, He is frequently called the holy one. He is so because the sum of all moral excellence is found in Him. He is pure and untainted even by a shadow of sin. 1John 1: 5 affirms this by saying God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all. Holiness is the very excellency of the divine nature. He is glorious in Holiness. Hallelujah!

Our Father has purer eyes that cannot behold evil or look on iniquity either Habakkuk 1:13. It is just right for the scripture to say in Isaiah 59:2 that.”…. your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” His holiness cannot make Him stand sin, and so separates himself from any form of sin. The Father, despite His oneness with the Son, had to turn His eyes away from the Son when He became sin for us. 2 Corinth 5:21. This drove the Son to cry’ my God, my God, why has thou forsaken me? This scenario should send a strong message to every child of God, especially ministers of God, who are tempted to feel that because of their unique gifts, they could do anything with their bodies and still function under the anointing. Please note, it is not a matter of whether the gifts are functioning in you, and all men are hailing you. What is the Spirit of God telling you about how you are living? In another sense, what does God’s word say about your lifestyle? God will turn His attention from any form of sin. If it is so, then what power is working those miracles you claim you are doing?

This perfection as none other is solemnly celebrated before the throne of heaven, the seraphim crying Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of host Isaiah 6:3. God Himself singles out this perfection, “Once have I sworn by my holiness Ps 89:35. It is an attribute of attributes (A Howe,1670) We read of the beauty of Holiness Ps 27:4.

God’s holiness is manifested in His works. The ‘Lord is righteous in all His works” Ps 145:17. Nothing but what is excellent can proceed from Him. Holiness is the rule of all His actions. God pronounced all He made from the beginning as very good (Gen 1: 31). Man was made upright Eccl 7:29) in the image and likeness of His creator. The angels that fell were also created Holy, for we are told that they ” did not keep their first estate but left their habitation Jude 6. It is said of Satan ” Thou was perfect in thy ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you. (Ezek 28:15)

As a communicable attribute, we must demonstrate similar traits in all that we do. We seek to be perfect, without defilement, and devoid of partiality. This should characterise all we do.

 CONFESSION

Thank you, dear heavenly father, for your uncompromising purity. Thanks also that your presence in us gives us that ability to express the same level of purity in our thoughts, actions, and works. Thank you that we can bring your light of holiness to shine in our world laden with sin.

THOUGHT: OUR HOLINESS PROCEEDS FROM HIS HOLINESS IN US.

THE IMMUTABILITY OF GOD 3

KEY SCRIPTURE: Heb 6:17 KJV” Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:”

We continue with the immutability of His counsel. God’s purpose cannot be terminated or defeated. Man is limited by proper foresight to anticipate the outcome of events and secondly a lack of power to execute them. God has no such limitations. He is both omnipotent and omniscient so there is never any need for Him to revise. We can always count on His promises. If He said it, then you must consider it done. Psalms 33:11 KJV “The counsel of the LORD standeth forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.”

In the light of the above, we see the vast or infinite distance between God and man. Creatures and their tendencies to change are normal. If the creature does not change by nature, then he or she is not a creature, rather he would be God. Yet all creation changes. This is the reason the scripture says, cursed is he whose trust or confidence is in a man. As the year has commenced resolve to place your confidence only in the Lord. No man can sustain himself in a single moment. Men are dependent beings. Naturally, we depend on water, food, and the air. All these are provided by the providence of God. Man is vitally dependent on God. It is unfortunate when any man claims to be intellectual or so scientifically informed that he says he does not need God. The Bible describes such a one as unwise. Psalms 14:1 KJV “To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The unwise hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, and there is none that doeth good. Ps 66:9 says,  “God holds our souls or breath in life…. “

Men as fallen creatures do not only change, but everything in us tends to oppose God. We have become like ‘wandering stars’ Jude 13 out of our proper orbit. The wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest (Isaiah t7:20). Fallen man is inconstant. Please let these lessons teach you that, no human being can be depended upon. To disobey God is to be deceived. This is a very hard truth, yet many blatantly rebel against God, only to their destruction and frustration in the end.  Your solution is to humbly turn to the Lord God through our Saviour Jesus Christ. He delivered us from sin and gave us eternal life so we could partake of the God kind of life and live in union with Jesus as one,1 Corinth 6:17. Jesus came to raise a family for God who would be partakers of God’s divine nature 2 Peter 1:4. Would you now surrender your lives to Him.

PRAYER

Dear Heavenly, Father, you are perfect and unchanging in your counsel. You do whatever you say. Man is only living when he is hooked up to you. I turn away from all carnal and fleshly dependencies to trust in only you. Jesus, I confess you as the Lord of my life. Thank you for saving my soul.

THE IMMUTABILITY OF GOD 2

KEY SCRIPTURE: Num 23:19 KJV God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

In our previous study, we considered some aspects of God’s being that do not change. Well God does not change in any aspect of His being. We are taking a look into certain aspects of His being so when relating to Him, we would give Him the best response concerning His nature. We have considered His immutability in His nature and His attributes. Today we would consider other areas.

First, we look at His immutability in His counsel. God never varies in His counsel. Some may object to this when they read, Gen 6:6 KJV “And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.” Your first response is, that we know the scriptures do not contradict themselves. From our key scripture, God reveals He is not a man that He should lie, or the son of man that He should repent. The explanation is simple; When speaking of Himself God relates to our limited capacities as men. He describes Himself as clothed with bodily members such as eyes, ears, and hands.

He speaks of Himself as ” waking” up (see Ps 78:65), as rising early(Jeremiah 7:13); yet He neither slumbers nor sleeps. When He institutes a change in His dealing with men, He describes His course of conduct as ” repenting ” (Gen 6:6). These are figurative terms that bring home to our understanding of His action. His word states that, when men honour Him, He will honour them, if they dishonour Him, he will change from honour to dishonour them. This is not a change in His counsel, rather it is very consistent with His nature.

God our Father is indeed Immutable in His counsel” The gifts and calling of God are without repentance” Rom 11:29. It must be so, for ‘ He is in one mind and who can turn Him? and what His soul desireth that He doeth. Balaam could not change His counsel to Him, though he tried to ‘ bribe’ him with several sacrifices. Numbers 23:1-10. It is a big error to expect God to change His counsel or mind on any issue He has instructed you. If you persist in seeking Him to change His counsel, He would only allow you to pursue your desire but note that is not His counsel.

When Balaam kept insisting on God accepting his view, God allowed him, but on the way, He showed him His anger against Balaam’s disobedience, by making his donkey speak to him when the angel of the Lord stood in his path to slay him. (Num 22:1-31 Pls read through the passage) May we learn from this story and never be hardened against God’s counsel.

PRAYER

Dear Father thank you for your love and wisdom that determines every counsel you give us. We will always humbly accept all that you instruct us. Indeed, your instructions are our life, and by doing them we prolong our days and it always goes well with us.

THOUGHT: GOD WILL NOT CHANGE HIS COUNSEL, DO NOT SEEK TO CHANGE IT.

THE IMMUTABILITY OF GOD

KEY SCRIPTURE: Mal 3:6 KJV “For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore, ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”

The immutability of God means He does not change. This is one of the attributes or nature of God which is not communicable with men. This means, all men tend to change.1Pet 1:24 KJV” For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:” When God was expressing His trustworthiness to the children of Israel in Moses day He said the following, Num 23:19 KJV “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” We understand by these verses that God is forever or perpetually the same, while men are not.

God is compared to a rock, when the entire ocean surrounding it is constantly in turbulence it is not moved. God has no beginning and no end and so, He cannot change. He is eternally the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness or shadow of turning. James 1:17. God’s nature of immutability gives us solid grounds to count on every promise He gives us. Heb 6:18 KJV “That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:”

First God is immutable for his nature and being are infinite, and so subject to no change. There never was a time when He was not there, and never will come a time when He shall cease to be God. He has never evolved, grown, or improved. All He is today; He has ever been and will always be the same. Our key scripture says, I am the Lord and I change not. Malachi 3:6. This is His unqualified affirmation. He cannot change for the better for He is already perfect and will ever remain perfect. He is never affected by anything outside Himself, and improvement or decoration is also impossible. This is why He can say” I AM THAT I AM ” Ex 3:14.

The next point is that God is unchanging in His attributes. He has always been the same before the universe was created and has remained the same since then. His power is unabated, wisdom is undiminished, His Holiness is undiluted, and God’s truthfulness is the same. ‘His faithfulness is unto all generations’ Psalms 119: 89,90.

CONFESSION

Thank you, heavenly Father for your unchanging nature, and therefore we are not consumed. My grip on your promises is unyielding to any influence of any kind, therefore I always triumph giving all glory to God.

THOUGHT: GOD’S IMMUTABILITY MEANS NOTHING SHOULD EVER MOVE YOU.

THE GOODNESS OF GOD AND HUMAN CRISIS. 2

KEY SCRIPTURE: Romans 8:28 ” And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose”.

The word of God teaches clearly that God is perfect. There is no mischief in the Holy one. His disposition towards His creation is good continually.

Despite His goodness, evil, pain, and misery abound all around us. As children of God, how can we benefit from His goodness? How do we walk in God’s goodness?

Our key scripture says, “and we know that all things work together for good, to them that love the Lord………..”. Love for God will always cause everything to turn out well for us. Love for God makes you a winner over the devil. Satan wins when he succeeds in making the children of God turn away from God. He wins when we stop believing the word of God.

Lovers of God are always high flyers. Now let’s consider 1st Corinthians 2:9 ” But as it is written, eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God had prepared for them that love Him.” This scripture simply means what God has for those who love Him is the best. On the vice versa it is always perilous for those who love themselves.2 Timothy 3:1-2 “This know also, that in the last days, perilous times shall come.

For men shall be lovers of their selves, covetous, boasters, ….”

You are always the loser if you put yourself first.

What shows that we love the Lord? “. John 14:21. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Doing the word is a sign that you love Him. The Lord would manifest Himself to all who love Him. This implies He would show Himself in your affairs. It means answers to prayers, the manifestation of miracles, and divine protection. Stop looking for the greatest prophet to pray for you. Do the word. It is indeed a wonderful experience to have God manifest His presence in your life.

Dear child of God, you can’t live for yourself and expect the * Lord to remain committed to you. God commits Himself to those who commit to Him.

  CONFESSION

My heavenly Father, I thank you that as I do your word, you continually manifest your presence to me. I will continually love you with all my heart.

THE GOODNESS OF GOD AND HUMAN CRISIS.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Romans 1:28 “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;”

Someone once asked; if God is such a good God why is evil so rampant? Why are there so many calamities all around us.?

God is eternally good. Anytime God relates with men, He deposits favour, blessings, and peace.  James 1:17 reads, “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning”. According to this verse, we see that all good and perfect things come from Him. This means He is not the originator of evil and calamities: Secondly, there is no variableness, that is, He remains constant. Forever He is good. Lastly, there is no shadow of turning with Him, that is, He is dependable.

The dominance of evil is the choice of men. John 3:19 reads ” And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil: The light is God’s goodness but men loved evil, so they chose it.

Beloved reader please understand evil is not just a state or an action. Evil is a person, a living intelligent being whose power is called darkness. He is called Satan. Revelation 12:9 reveals Him as the old serpent, who deceives all men. He is the arch-enemy of all men. 2nd Corinthians 4:4 calls Him the god of this world, who has blinded the minds of them who believe not the gospel. This is the choice of the world. The evil and calamities that prevail are His baptism on humanity. One may ask, can’t God do anything about it.? The answer is no and yes. It is no, so long as men persist in their sinful ways.

Conversely, the answer is yes, if God would find men who would stand in the gap and pray for God’s intervention. God leased the dominion of the world into man’s hands after creation. Genesis 1:26 “And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness and let them have dominion……  over all the earth…..”. The dominion of the earth was given to man, God cannot intervene until man invites Him.

This is why Christians must intercede for the intervention of the Lord in the affairs of this world.

  CONFESSION

The world is engulfed in evil, yet God has not changed. He is eternally good. I would commit my life to intercede for the salvation of men as well as God’s intervention to curtail the evil that abounds.
