KEY SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 58:6 KJV” Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?”
Isaiah 58 continuous with the kind of fast God accepts. In Isaiah 58:5, the Lord mentions a number of self afflicting acts that a man may go through in the process of fasting, which does not merit His approval, in the light of what He really wants in the time of fasting. The Lord mentioned afflicting the soul by, wearing sackcloth and ashes or any other depressive act. (These things are not done these days, but people abstain from food for days) The Lord shows that He looks for something more than afflicting the soul
What does He want from us? He says the bands of wickedness must be loosed, and must undo the heavy burdens, as well as to let the oppressed go free. What does these things mean? Literally every wicked attitude towards any person must be abandoned, if you wish to gain God’s attention and approval. If there is anyone who is under your tribute, or any form of hardship you may be doing towards anyone, then that act must cease. Now get this clear, God values the love and mercy you express towards your neighbor than the bodily afflictions you may go through. If you fast for days yet you are terribly mistreating your wife, husband, workers or any other person, then God says your abstaining from food for whatever number of days, does not mean anything to Him.
On the more spiritual grounds, during the period of your fast, you must seek and pray for the liberation of all that are in every form of bondage. Intercede for those who are chained by shameful habits that make their lives miserable. Intercede for the salvation of the lost. All these are demonic bondages that men must be free from. Fasting is not a selfish venture. It is an act that God must have control over. It therefore focuses on the broader will of God than the very need that you may be longing to see a change. Fasting is your pursuit to see a change yet, it must function within God’s terms for it to be acceptable to Him. In this way you will also get what you want. One sure longing you must add up to your prayers is to intercede for the salvation of souls. If you would do this you would speed up your answers.
During my fast I pray about my need, yet I also seek to lose every band of wickedness, and to show mercy to all who are oppressed. In this way my request is made on high and my answers come to me.
