KEY SCRIPTURE: Luke 18:11 KJV” The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican”.
SELF righteousness is self-justification. Only God can justify an individual. It is one of the traits of those who do not know about the grace of God. The self-righteous man does not have the love of Christ in him. He would judge and condemn others. (John 8:1-11) The self-righteous man will condemn himself when he fails to do right. It is a life without the peace of God. He compares himself with others (2nd Corinth 10:12) In our key scripture the Pharisee justified himself and condemned the publican.
Nobody is more righteous than his neighbor. It is a gift we receive by faith. Romans 5:17. We should not condemn others because, it is the grace of God which has made us what we are. (Luke 6:37)
What about preachers who talk about the sins of others and seem to condemn them? To point one’s sin to him is not wrong, but to do so, because you feel you are better than him or her is an error. Everything must be done in love. If it is not of love, then you may easily fall into the very sin you are condemning others about. Gal 6:1 “KJV Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted” .The above scripture advices such people to be careful less they would be overtaken by the error they are condemning.
IT is extremely dangerous to be self-righteous. Such people have fallen out of the grace of God. (Galatians 5:4) They seek to be justified by their works. The just or righteous shall live by faith and not by their effort. (Rom 1:17). Please note, anytime you make a statement that I am a better Christian than your neighbor, then you are acting in self-righteousness. It is a way of self-deceit. It is the cause of strive and long unending arguments among many people. The self-righteous man is not acceptable before God. (Luke 18:14)
Thank you, heavenly father for your righteousness imparted unto me. I therefore cannot boast or condemn others in anyway. I am what I am by your grace. Thank you, Lord.
2 Corinthians 10:12 KJV” For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise”.
Luke 18:14 KJV I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
