KEY SCRIPTURE: John 1:33 KJV “And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.”
John explained that he baptizes with water, but Jesus is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. The bible translators used the preposition ‘with’ which relates more with the means by which the act is done. Baptism, as we know is transliterated from Greek. That means, the word was taken from the Greek, and brought into English, without much changes. The word is baptizo which means to be immersed in, dipped in or buried in something. The Greek word which was translated as ‘with’ is the word ‘en’, which is a preposition denoting a fixed position in a place. The word ‘with’ used should not create any wrong picture in our minds.
With the above understanding, just as one is immersed or baptised into water, to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, means one is dipped, body, soul and spirit, into the Holy Ghost. It is an experience where one is fully overwhelmed with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the power house of the Godhead. To be baptized in the Holy Spirit is to be filled with power or dynamic ability of God. Acts 1:8 says, “and you shall receive power after the Holy Spirit is come upon you…”. This is a power to be a witness for Jesus. The word witness is translated from the Greek word ‘Martus ‘ out of which we have the word martyr. A martyr is one who proves his faith, even unto death. The witness testifies about the reality of Jesus and by his faith is ready to prove it in signs and wonder. Mark 16:20 KJV “And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” Amen.
A number of Christians associate the baptism in the Holy Spirit only to speaking in tongues. Well, it is a truth of scripture that when one is baptised in the Holy Spirit, he would speak in tongues (Acts 2: 4, Acts 8:17,18, Acts 10 :44-46, Acts 19″6). These passages allude to the fact that, all those who were baptised in the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues, yet according to Acts 1:8, the real essence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit, is to be enveloped in power for service. This power will heal your body, if you are sick (Rom8:11) You will be able to bring healing to others who are also suffering. The means of stirring this power, is to pray a lot in tongues (1 Corinth 14:4. If you have not been baptised in the Holy Spirit, you can be baptised now. The Lord stands by you to bless you with this great gift. You may pray this way, “Jesus you are the Lord of my life, you are the baptizer in the Holy Spirit. My heart is ready, and my mind is also ready, Lord baptize me in the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Amen. Receive now the baptism into the Holy Spirit. Open your mouth and start praying right now as you thank the Lord for His amazing gift.
