BE CERTAIN ABOUT JESUS’ MESSIAHSHIP

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 6:69 KJV “And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.”

It beats my imagination to see an individual who claims to be a Christian, only to come out saying he no longer follows Jesus or has joined another faith. There are two main explanations to this occurrence.

This individual might have known the Lord, but through neglect of practicing his faith, he gradually drifted off like a drifting canoe which has not been anchored to the shore, or he did not know the Lord and through some turbulence of life events, or some teaching which convinced him, against the truth of God’s word, because of his poor knowledge of the scriptures.

Jesus is real, alive and most powerful. Many in our era have encountered him physically.

Everyone who has been genuinely born again has encountered Him, through the peace He gives, the transformation of life He brings, and the many mysterious answers to prayer He does always for us.

Apostle Peter speaking on behalf of the twelve said “And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. (John 6:69). What was the grounds on which Peter and the rest of the twelve disciples stood to come to such a conclusion?

They had followed him, heard him teach, heard him made statements that revealed His supremacy over all things. Seen Him work miracles that no one ever did. All these made them to conclude that He is the Messiah. According to John 8:31,32 they diligently followed and knew the truth which set them free.

Now after these men found the truth about Jesus, they had to decide to accept the truth.

One could be opened up to certain truths yet He may refuse to accept it.

Many people get to know the bare truths about Jesus, yet out of pride refuse to surrender to him

From their example what must we do to come into such knowledge of our Lord Jesus?

Seek Him diligently. Jeremiah 29:13 KJV.” And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

The Lord has no business with those who are not ready for Him. Jesus did not reveal himself to the chief priest and Pharisees when He rose from the dead. They would not have believed in Him. He showed Himself alive to His disciples.

As the disciples followed Him you must do likewise, through prayer, studying His word, fasting, and acting on every instruction He gives you. As you do these things you would encounter Him in various instances. He may visit you as He visited me when I went on a prayer and fasting retreat.

Please note this, no one can know God until He decides to reveal Himself to you, yet He reveals Himself to those who search for Him with all their heart.

After you have known and experienced so much about Him, settle it once and for all in your heart that He is the Christ the Son of the living God.

STANDING STRONG IN CHRIST 2

KEY SCRIPTURE:2 Pet 1:6 KJV” And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;”

We learnt from our previous study that in order to stand strong in Christ, one ought to be diligent to add to his faith in Christ, knowledge, and to knowledge, temperance. Today we consider some extra qualities that we have to be adding up to make us strong and unmovable in our faith. Our key scripture says we add patience to temperance.

Patience is the ability to bear or endure contrary situations without getting bitter, murmuring or complaining, but with an inner assurance that through the power of God’s word everything is well.

2 Thess 1:4 KJV “So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:” Patience is always based on the comfort of the word of God.

To add patience to our faith, means, to accept whatever the word says or promises about any situation and to declare that, if the word says so, then it is settled. Hebrews 6:12.

In addition to patience is godliness. Godliness is the act of living by the counsel of the scriptures. It involves approaching every matter in life from the scriptural point of view.

Godliness is simply, being scriptural in your dealings.

The call to add up godliness is to strictly adhere to biblical counsel in everything. Some people try to suggest that according to the scripture we must give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and give to God what is God’s (Matt 22:21).

By this statement they mean you can honor certain traditional demands even if it opposes God’s word.

This is a subtle work of Satan to deceive many. There should be no occasion you act contrary to God’s word. That scripture was ONLY referring to paying taxes to the government which was a godly act, and not to pour libation, or do any other things unto demon spirits, which is an ungodly act.

The scripture says further, that “And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. (2 Peter 1:7). This time the word talks about brotherly kindness and love. Kindness and love are basically about the same thing. Kindness in the Greek language is brotherly love, or Philadelphia in the Greek language. This is to place a very high value on all persons and cherish them dearly.

You can’t love what you treat as common.

It is the strong ones who go out of their way to support the weak.

The selfish are very inward looking and that leaves them with much sorrows.

This makes the selfish person very weak, vulnerable and hurting. Free yourself from such bondage to genuinely love all persons, thereby stabilising your inner strength.

Dear one, if these qualities abound in you, you will be very fruitful and will never give up your grounds or faith in Christ.

THOUGHT: MAINTAIN YOUR LOVE FOR IT IS THE BOND OF PERFECTION.

STANDING STRONG IN CHRIST

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 6:67 KJV Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

Life events always offers us challenges that give us the option to make certain choices. Jesus disciples forsook him en mass after He talked about giving His flesh to the world. He then turned to the twelve and asked them, will you also go away? I believe this was a very pensive moment. “Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.”  John 6:68. Simon Peter and the rest of the twelve were resolved to stand with Jesus and also knew the truth about the Lord, but the rest of the disciples did not know.

In the second epistle of Peter, he shared certain thoughts that would help every sincere follower of Jesus stand firm in Christ. 2 Peter 1: 5-11. He listed certain qualities that one must have.

He added that if these traits stay in increasing measure in an individual, that person would never fall.

They are as follows.

1. Vrs 5: You must add virtue to your faith. Virtue is to have a sense of moral excellence.

To do the right thing always, and doing it well.

It is to maintain an upright attitude or a sense of giving your best to achieve the best in everything you do.

2. He must also add knowledge to the virtue. Knowledge means to be enlightened by the truth, so the darkness of the devil will not envelope you. The people who forsook Jesus, did so because of a lack of knowledge which gave them a very wrong understanding, about Jesus’ teaching.

There are three main aspects of Christian knowledge that every child of God must have. These are

1. A general knowledge of the bible. This is acquired by reading through the bible and other Christian literature

2. A knowledge of Christian apologetics. This is a knowledge of how to appropriately defend the faith. Knowing about the validity of scriptures, evidential truths about Christ, His birth, death resurrection.

3 A knowledge of the power and presence of God. This comes through seeking the face of God and acting on His word, that gives God the opportunity to reveal His power and presence to you. A man with these three aspects of Christian knowledge cannot be confused by adversity, people’s misdeeds or   those who wrongly attack the scriptures.

3. The next trait that must be added to knowledge is temperance. Temperance is self-control or self-discipline. Temperance is to bring yourself to live within the stipulated rules. Failure to be disciplined could cause your ultimate disqualification from receiving your ultimate rewards in the presence of God.

Temperance is gained by conditioning your mind with the scriptures, as well as taking certain physical actions like abstinence from certain places, books, videos, persons, and rather undertaking practices like fasting, meditations and controlling the mind to think scripturally always.

UNFAITHFUL FRIENDS

KEY SCRIPTURE; John 6:66 KJV” From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him”.

The Lord Jesus told His disciples the truth about Himself, that He will give His flesh for all men to eat for their salvation. Jesus knew very well that the Jews held very strictly to their religion, and would have nothing to do with cannibalism. Although the Lord did not mean they should be cannibals but, that was how the Jews interpreted His teaching. Most of His disciples left Him. I believe the Lord obeyed divine instructions and so was not moved by the departure of the people. His actions was to prove how faithful they were.

Do not be moved when certain people become unfaithful to forsake you. I have seen certain people become so sad about their friends or partners who became unfaithful and left them.

It is good to lose an unfaithful friend now than for him or her to live with you for a rather long time.

Her or his long term of associating with you could mean your betrayal, or some danger of some king. Do not be unusually worried when a close acquaintance lives on the grounds of unfaithfulness. How did Jesus react to their departure? He was not moved at all. Can you imagine if there has been more Judases staying on with Jesus to the end? Now this is to a young lady, just consider the boy, who claimed he loved you and would marry you, but forsook you to marry another girl, without telling you what was wrong with you. What would have happened to you, if he had stayed on to marry you?

Proverbs 18:24 teaches us that, “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” This scripture teaches us to be faithful to our friends, partners and even more, to our spouses. It says there are some friends that sticks closer than a brother. Such friends are genuinely excited when you are lifted or promoted. They would stand by you when times are good or bad. These ones are not there for opportunity but are genuinely committed to your welfare. Such acquaintances would forgive you when you err. The friend who finds it difficult to forgive you when you err is an unfaithful pal. The one who would not be bold enough to tell you the wrongs they see you commit is an unfaithful friend. Barring all that has been said about unfaithful friends, It is not good to be suspicious of the bad behaviours of your friends.

Your part is to genuinely love them, yet always tell the truth to them.

It is the truth that would determine those who are genuine or unfaithful.

NEVER GIVE UP ON JESUS

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 6:66 KJV “From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.”

It is said that, “When the going gets tough, only the tough get going”.

The Lord said lots of things that, were not easily understood, so a lot of his disciples left Him. Most men are fair weather Christians. They are very high in the flow when everything seems to go very well. When the tides rise and the turbulence of trials and opposition are rather threatening, they throw in the towel and give up. May it not be you. In this instant the Lord spoke about giving His flesh for the salvation of the world. This message was too hard for them to except, so they left the master. What is it that is making you feel like giving up?

There are some brethren who have given up their faith because, someone succeeded in making them convinced that the bible has flaws. Please listen to the advice of scripture. Col 2:8 KJV. ” Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ”.

The scripture states it clearly. These people speak philosophy which is purely earthly wisdom or common sense. They also teach vain deceit whose sources are tradition of men and the rudiments of this world or popularly called science. They are not after Christ in whom dwells the fulness of God in bodily form, whose virgin birth cannot be denied, His miraculous life is non contestable and his passion, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension are all facts of history.

There are a number of reasons, why certain individuals forsake the Lord into a life of uncertainty. Some give up because they were disappointed by an influential Christian they trusted. If this is your case, then you are falling out for a very unfortunate reason.

Please note that Satan can use anyone to fulfill his agenda.

He used Judas, Peter and even all the disciples who forsook the master at the greatest time of need, the moment he was arrested.

Do not allow any man to make you give up ultimate LIFE

There are those who give up because an unexpected, and harsh trials came their way. These conditions left them hurting, and very bitter. They got very angry at God and the Lord Jesus. Dear one if this condition is your lot, then please, you are getting certain fundamental issues very wrong.

God is love, and has no iota of evil in his plans for His loving children.

He says His plans for you are very good and not evil, to bring you to an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11. What many of us fail to recognise is that, there is the god of this world whose only agenda is to steal, kill and destroy. His ultimate plans is to destroy your faith. He is to kill and destroy every praise from your mouth. Refuse to lose your faith and your praise.

Repent of the wrong attitude towards God and accept His love today.

DON’T LOSE OUT

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 6:64 KJV” But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.”

We learnt in our previous discussions that, the word of God is Spirit and life. It is the highest principle that rules everything in this life. Submitting to it is the only means to unlock the mighty potential within it. The Lord said there were some of the people with Him who did not believe all that He was telling them about the word. In actual fact He knew what was in their heart and the one who would betray Him. This is very unfortunate yet there are many professing Christians who do not believe what the word teaches.

What on earth could make a people walking daily with Jesus yet refuse to believe all that He says, after seeing all the miracles the Lord did? Judas His financial secretary later betrayed Him for only thirty pieces of silver. You may be saying now that, Judas was too callous. Consider the many acts of unbelief and blatant disobedience that you might have done. Every act of disobedience and stubbornness is a function of unbelief.

Unbelief is also a product of an unconquered self.

You should be a crucified(dead) man to be able to follow Jesus.

Gal 2:20 KJV” I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless, I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Death to self is the main stance that leads the child of God to overcome the devil. (Rev 12:11)

The blatant show of unbelief demonstrated by the children of Israel was a sign of a very high level of self-centeredness. Believing in the concept of the word is to accept something which one has not seen as real, yet because God’s word says so he accepts it as real. Thomas said, until I see the nail print in His hands, I will not believe. Jesus after correcting Thomas, said, blessed are those who have not seen yet they do believe (John 20:28). This is what many are not ready to do, and so they have become unbelieving believers.

It therefore takes death to self to act in real faith.

Please note: it is not just hearing the word that builds faith, but a heart that is dead to self that would build faith when it hears.

You may do the following:

  1. Accept you are crucified with Jesus.
  2.  Take time to hear the word and meditate on the scriptures by accepting promises as personal prophecies from God to you.
  3.  Speak out those prophecies to yourself always.
  4.  Act on them believing they are already fulfilled

THE WORD IS SPIRIT 2

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 6:63 KJV “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

God’s word is the supreme principle or law that rules this world. Everything, in this life including finance, security, health, physical matter and what have you, are all subjected to the rule of God’s word.

It is your submission to it which the bible calls faith that brings all of its conquering effect into your lives.

I will give the following illustration to explain my point.

I listened to the testimony of a lady. She travelled in a public transport called ” trotro” in Ghana, with other passengers from one part of town to another. She shared the gospel to her fellow passengers who sat around her. On their way, certain armed robbers stopped them and demanded everyone to get out of the bus. Every passenger frightfully got out. She reasoned that if I have been sharing the word with these people, I should demonstrate my faith in what I have been sharing. She refused to get down, but started praying in tongues. The robbers got to her and said are you not coming down, what do you think you are? They pointed the gun at her, pulled the trigger and nothing happened. They both tried their weapons and all failed to shoot. They instantly ran away.

The word has power to protect, yet until you trust in it you will not experience that power.

Jesus said in Matt 4:4 that man should not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceed from the mouth of God.

To live on the word is to cast your life on the word.

The lady in the story cast her life on the word and indeed she was protected. The word is Spirit and life.

The word is a person, and only requires your absolute trust to have it subject every other opposing power to its rule. Sicknesses arrogantly torments men, yet the word is ready to mesmerise sicknesses for us, if we would be prepared to submit to what it says. What is it in this life that makes a mess of men? Is it poverty, danger, robbery, what is it, the ruler of all principles in this life is the word? Mix the word with faith and you can have whatever it talks about. Hebrews 4:2 KJV” For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

Dear one, stop depending on your, senses reason, strength or the flesh of any kind. The flesh profits nothing. Place your total confidence in the word and you would have real meaning as well as reigning over the evil forces that is making humans unnecessarily miserable.

MAN WAS CREATED AS THE KING OF GOD’S CREATION, he lost his kingship by depending on the flesh, IT IS GOING BACK TO THE WORD THAT WOULD ENTHRONE HIM AS THE KING OF CREATION AGAIN.

THE WORD IS SPIRIT

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 6:63 KJV” It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

Our key scripture is one of the greatest revelations from the word of God. It tells us about the two main forces in this life.

These forces are the physical called the flesh, and the spiritual called the Spirit. It reveals also that, the spiritual rules over the physical. The physical is a product of the spiritual.

Heb 11:3 KJV” Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

The fall of man was simply a departure from the influence of the Spirit that gives life, to be ruled and influenced by the physical, that is the flesh which produces death.

Men in their blind state oppose the Spirit, and try to completely claim it is not necessary, only to be controlled by their senses.

The pain and the degradation in this life comes from this wrong choice. The scripture says, the physical or the flesh profits nothing. The ‘nothing’ it gives is revealed by the scripture as death. Rom 8:6 KJV “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” How do we relate, contact or fellowship with the Spirit which makes and gives life? The answer from the scripture is through the word of God. The word of God is Spirit. The word is full of life. Nothing functions in the physical without it.

The worse thing to do to yourself is to neglect the word of God.

It is a self-imposed destruction.

The control of either the flesh or   the control of the word is a choice between death and life.

Deut 30:15 KJV” See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;”

Dear one refuse to be deceived with the world as they rebel against the word. Choose to be totally submitted to the word of God. Make it your greatest delight. Those who delight and meditate on it are like a tree planted by living waters. They yield their fruits in their season. Their leaves does not wither. Whatsoever they do will prosper. Psalms 1:2,3.

Whenever you meditate on the scriptures it is actually a visit with God.

The word in your heart, is life in you, it is God in you and it is light in you. Doing the word is God in action through you. It is also life at work through you. The scripture says, to be given to the word makes you complete, and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly furnished unto every good work. 2 Tim 3:17 AMP.

CHRIST’ HEAVENLY ASCENSION

KEY SCRIPTURE Joh 6:62 KJV” What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?”

The Lord realised His disciples were murmuring when He talked about, they eating His flesh to have life. The Lord said, if this was offensive to them, then what would they say and do when they saw Him ascend into the heavens? Why would the ascension create a stir for the disciples? The ascension of Jesus is purely a supernatural and inexplainable but an event that explains lots of truths for the Christian to be firmly established in his faith. The following is Luke’s account in his second narrative of the acts of Jesus after His resurrection. Acts 1:9 KJV” And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.”

The following are some of the significance of ascension to the believer and unbeliever as well.

1. The ascension defies the scientific law of gravity and no man has died, resurrected and ascended into the heavens but Jesus.

2.The ascension reveals there is a heaven somewhere. Jesus was seen by about one hundred and twenty disciples, who were ready to testify of what they had seen, to the point of dying for their testimony. It meant, it really occurred. There is a heaven, which is the habitation of God the Father, the Holy angels and the spirits of our departed faithful Christians. Hebrews 6:20 KJV” Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.” We have a certain hope that makes us stand faithfully for the tenants of our faith, even in very trying moments, for our master and Lord has evidently entered into heaven.

His ascension into heaven also points to the fact that He would come back again. Acts 1:11 KJV” Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” After the Lord had ascended into the heavens two men in white apparel stood in the midst of the bewildered disciples who were gazing into the heavens, and made the above statement to them. Jesus will come back and all men shall see him. This event is different from the rapture of the church. During the rapture, the Lord will appear in the skies and the Christians who are dead, will be raised whiles those who are alive will be changed in a moment and join the Lord in the skies.

His ascension tells everyman who has not given his life over to Jesus to be aware that just as there is a heaven for all true believers, there is a hell for anyone who would not accept the Lord Jesus. There is a sure place where the spirits of sinners are tormented, called hell. There would be a final judgement where, hell and all sinners would be cast into the lake of fire.

Rev 21:8 KJV” But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

WHEN THE TRUTH SEEMS TOO DIFFICULT TO TAKE

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 6:60 KJV “Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?”

Truth at certain occasions can be very difficult to take. A lady whose father-in-law had offended her, felt so bitter that, she was never ready to forgive him. She was later attacked by a strange illness that made her. body to swell up. A pastor was invited to pray for her. When the man of God came to her bedside, he asked her to forgive her father-in-law, and everything would be okay. This instruction was too difficult for her to accept. Her condition kept worsening till she could no longer stand it. She then decided to forgive him. Her condition then suddenly started  improving. It was a big problem accepting that instruction.

Jesus’ audience found it very difficult accepting the truth he was telling them. They could not bring themselves to accept that, they must eat the flesh of Jesus. They asked, who can accept these things? What makes certain truths of scripture, very difficult for some people to accept? In this particular case they did not understand what He meant. In Matthew 19:21, the Lord Jesus met a rich young ruler who came to Him asking about what to do to have eternal life. The Lord earlier asked him to obey the commandments, which he claimed, he has been observing since childhood. He then asked him to go sell all that He had, give it to the poor and come follow him. This man left very sad because he had lots of riches and was not prepared to lose them.

There are many of us who find it difficult to leave certain lifestyles to accept what the Lord may be saying to us. The things of God are always spiritual and they should be spiritually discerned. Carnality is the basic cause of not being able or ready to accept the word and ways of God.

1Corinth 2:14 KJV “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” Following Godly instructions is always the way to blessings and life Prov 4:13.

What to do to help yourself accept God’s word;

1. Accept that God’s way is always perfect.2 Tim 3:16,17

2. Refuse to be proud, for pride always makes you a loser James 4:6

3. When your interest comes against God’s way, choose God’s way. Luke 22:42

4. Trust always in the Lord, and lean not on your understanding Prov 3:5

5. Pray for an understanding heart.
