CHARACTER STUDY: MOSES 2

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 2:6 ” And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, this is one of the Hebrews’ children”.

Faith in God will always bring amazing results. The Pharaoh’s daughter and her entourage saw the basket only to open it and find a crying baby. The bible said she was filled with compassion for the baby. The very ‘beast’ looking for the child’s life to destroy it, becomes the very place of refuge for the baby. This is a miracle. Never be afraid to trust the Lord for your needs and protection.

How can one express an absolute confidence in God? You may do this by turning your mind and heart from the challenges unto what God has said. It is His word in your heart that gives birth to faith. Faith is not a feeling. It is also not reasoning things out. It is not dependent on your ability to analyse. All these things would make faith weak. Faith is purely confidence in God and his word. It is rather unreasonable yet God’s track record has always been faithfulness towards all those who showed confidence in Him. Romans 10:12 ” For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him”.

Moses senior sister Miriam went to Pharaoh’s daughter and told her she could get a Jewish nurse to take care of the baby. Why didn’t Pharaoh’s daughter say she would rather prefer an Egyptian nurse? God was perfectly in charge because he had been given the right to be in charge through his mother’s faith. Many times, people do not allow God to fully be in charge. They release the problem say they have given it into God’s hands yet they worry. God always wants an hundred percent trust so he could work out hundred percent miracle.

The child was given back to Moses own mother to nurse him. This time she had full security for the child. No Egyptians soldier would come frightening her. She was paid again for taking care of her baby. This is the extra benefit of having absolute confidence in the Lord.

Verse 11 says when Moses was old, he went out to see his brethren, and saw an Egyptian molesting a Jew. He attacked him and killed him. Moses had the deliver instinct in him yet that approach was not how God was going to do it. It would take the supernatural arm to do it.

Many things need God’s supernatural power and we must allow him to show us how this would be done.

 CONFESSION

My faith is strong in the Lord because my life agenda is His agenda and He would always defend His name. He has forever been faithful to all those who placed their confidence in Him. My case is not an exemption.

CHARACTER STUDY: MOSES 1

KEY SCRIPTURE: Exodus 2:2 ” And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months”.

We take another journey to look at one of God’s servants, Moses. There are a lot to learn about him. Moses came in as a deliverer. He was born because of God’s agenda to free his people from bondage.

In one of our discussions on king David we said leadership is the baby of a vision. God’s vision to deliver his people gave birth to Moses. The bible is the greatest book on leadership. Dear leader it is the vision that gave the cause for your role. Every good leader is to fulfill God’s agenda and not his. You would succeed as a leader if you highly esteem God who initiated the idea, that is the vision and then focus on the vision. If you the leader become the center of action and attention you have failed. You as a leader should never allow your interest to becloud your task. You exist as a leader because of the task and in fulfilling that task you please God and become a beacon of hope unto many.

The name Moses means “drawn” since he was drawn out of the water. It also means rescued.

Moses was born at a crisis moment. Before his birth the Pharaoh, that is the king of Egypt decided to control the population of the Jews by killing all male born to them. Every boy below two years was to be killed. Satan and his devils always scheme and strategise to destroy the saints of God. Ephesians 6:11 tells us to “put on the whole armour of God that he may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil”.

The bible said Moses mother kept him for three months and when she could not hide him further decided to place him in a basket which was well sealed from within so no water could enter and placed him in the Nile where the Pharaoh’s daughter comes to wash or bath. Hebrews 11:23 says the mother kept him by faith. She put him on the river by faith as she asked his sister to watch what will happened. At certain times the best way to keep a thing is to release it. As she released him, she let him into God’s hands to determine the whole future of the boy. Our father is the greatest keeper, preserver and protector of all things. The child became more secured when the mother by faith released him into God’s hands.

    PRAYER

I pray for all leaders and people who occupy various positions in organizations, groups, and associations that, they are at that position because of a specified task and would do good to themselves by fulfilling that task.

CHARACTER STUDY: KING DAVID 46

KEY SCRIPTURE:1 Kings 2:10 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.

We come to the end of our study on the character of David.

David finally sleeps in death. He peacefully goes to the other side. Many Christians are afraid when death is mentioned. This is rather dangerous turn of events. Apostle Paul says in Philippians 1:21 that “for me to live is Christ and to die is gain”. The problem with many Christians is that, they are living for themselves. This is wrong, we do not live for ourselves. We are here in the name of God and we live for him.

The Lord Jesus died and conquered death so we must no longer be afraid of death. (Hebrews 2:14,15). When the Christian lives this life, he goes to be with the Lord. Philippians 1:23 “For I am in a strait between two, having a desire to depart and to be with Christ which is far better”, yet he adds that nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. Going to be with the Lord is a glorious and an incomparable experience to anything on this earth. We have assignments to fulfill towards our fellow men. We are here to serve one another concerning the things of God. This is the reason we are here. We are not here for pleasure and satisfying the flesh, no! Our continual stay on the earth is to do the will of the father in the lives of others. All the business of fear of death is a sign of our non-commitment to the master. He says occupy till I come. Engage yourself for Him, and keep ministering to the lost. Minister to the sick. Minister to the brethren. Let your life be fully given to honouring the master.

David lived his life fully to honour the name of God. He sought to honour the Lord in all he did. He fought for God. He defended the name of God. He led a full life because he lived fully for God. In a sense he was God’s puppet. This is a successful life. When a man lives this way, he knows there is a crown of glory awaiting him. (2nd Tim 4:7) He does not worry or fear about leaving this life. Jesus said where your treasure is there will your heart be. Where is your treasure. Lay your treasure in heaven. Invest your life in God and in His service.

You are the salt of the earth; you are the light of the world. Give your light to the maximum.

  CONFESSION

My life is for the Lord. I live to glorify His name. I am a blessing to my world, as I always bring sunshine to a gloomy life. I will continue to do His will till he comes.

 FURTHER STUDIES.

Philippians 1:20-21 ” According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain”.

Luke 19:13 ” And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come”.

CHARACTER STUDY: KING DAVID 45

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Kings 2:3 ” And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:”

King David advises his son Solomon who was his successor. He tells him the principle to be successful in life. He first tells him to be strong and show himself a man. Leadership is the baby of a vision and you need to be strong to stay focused on the vision. Leadership also means leading a number of people along a course of action and you need to be tough to maintain that body on the course of action. As a leader you help people enter into their God ordained destinies, by instructing them in special disciplines of life, and so you need to be strong to make them accept to go through such disciplines.

In verse 3 he tells him to be obedient to the word of God. *Success in life is doing what the creator created you for and failure is doing what you were not created for. The law of God or the word of God shows us what God expects us to do. When we do them, we remain victorious and successful. I believe everybody wants to be successful, then let’s simply take the advice David gave his son Solomon. God gave the same advice to Joshua in Joshua 1:8. He told him that if he diligently hearkens to the word of God, God would also keep his promises he made to David.

David went on to give him certain instructions that he had to do. The first of these was to make sure that he killed Joab. This statement is rather alarming. Joab was his right-hand man, why then would he call for his death? Joab consistently showed that he had an independent spirit. He always wanted to do that which pleased him and not what pleased the king. He killed Abner who was in Saul’s camp but gave David the right hand of fellowship. That was against David’s wish. He also killed Amasa who was a general for the brethren from Judah. Joab should have inherited the grace on David as a mighty warrior. He rather inherited his anger and a decision to get him killed. Other men like, Adino, Eleazar and Shammah whose names did not show up often, inherited David’s grace as a mighty warrior. Joab even joined Adonijah to be king when he knew very well, David wanted Solomon to be the king. Every organization must go in one direction and therefore needs one voice, and that is the voice of the leader. Joab’s views many times differed from David’s view point. He would have been a problem to Solomon’s rule if he had lived.

Dear leader do not keep people who have an independent spirit around you. They either repent or you free them from working with you.

 PRAYER

Father, help all leaders surround themselves with real supportive people who would form a great team achieving great things.

1 Kings 2:4 ” That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel”.

CHARACTER STUDY: KING DAVID 44

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Kings 2:1 ” Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,”

The bible said “the days drew nigh that David should die….”. Death is a fact of life yet many of us don’t want to talk about it. The results of not studying the truth about death as God’s word has revealed, is fear and satanic manipulation.

The bible said it is appointed unto man once to die and after death judgement. (Hebrews 9:27). The bible also reveals that some of us who would remain at the Lord’s coming would not see death. This would happen at the appearing of the Lord to rapture the church. (1st Thessalonians 4:17) “Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall ever be with the Lord”.

I wish that we all open our hearts and ears to these truths. There is a spirit called the spirit of death which is an agent of the devil and the bible calls it the last enemy. 1st Corinthians 15:26 “The last enemy shall be destroyed which is death”.

When the Lord Jesus died and resurrected, he conquered death for everyone. He took the key or authority to call men out of this life from Satan and the spirit of death. The Lord said in Revelation 1:18 as follows “I am he that liveth and was dead and behold i am alive for evermore Amen and have the keys of hell and death”. The Lord Jesus is the one who has the authority to call anyone out of this life. It is illegal for Satan and the spirit of death to do so. Unfortunately, many don’t know and many more don’t believe in Jesus and so the spirit of death still takes hold over them and kills them. Most deaths are not the Lord who calls them but the prince of darkness. Note: If a child of God is killed by the devil, he would still go to heaven, but his assignment on this earth would have been cut short. In the book of Job, he lost his whole family, and he said, Job 1:21.”………..: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD”. Was it the Lord who took from Job? No! it was Satan

Hebrews 2:14 also reveals that our Lord Jesus has paralysed the devil and delivered us from the bondage and fear of death. He has destroyed the devil who had the power of death. Satan deceives men by putting the fear of all kinds of things and then murders them. According to John 8:44, Satan is a murderer and the father of lies.

If a man submits himself to God’s word, and walks in faith, and believes in the Lord’s victory over the spirit of death., this spirit, would not have power over him but would be called home by the Lord Jesus after he or she has finished his or her assignment.

CONFESSION

I believe in the Lord Jesus victory over Satan and the spirit of death. Satan has no power over me for l am submitted to the Lord and His word. I fulfill my mission in Jesus name.

CHARACTER STUDY: KING DAVID 43

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Kings 1:30 ” Even as I sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day”.

David at the very point before his exist from this life had to confirm his declaration that his son Solomon would be king after him.

One of the greatest blessings of a leader is to have a worthy successor after you. In the case of David, he was the only king among the kings of Israel who enthroned his successor in his lifetime. This event crowned the glorious life of David. Once again, we learn that a life given to absolute trust in God as well as submission to the will of God would make one very successful. The Lord God laid down the principle for making a successful life in Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shall meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shall make thy way prosperous and thou shall have good success”. Whether we succeed or fail is our own creation. From Joshua account we see that, it is not God who makes a man to fail or succeed. The manual, that is God’s word is there for us to follow and obey. This was the lifestyle of David. He was given solely to God and his word. He had a prosperous and a good successful life.

We also realized in the passage that Absalom’s brother Adonijah decided to announce himself king even when his father had not said so. He conferred with men like Joab, and Abiathar the priest to imposed his kingship over Israel. Meanwhile the king had earlier sworn to Bathsheba that her son Solomon would be king. How was Bathsheba going to solve the problem? A direct confrontation would be bloody and foolish. She conferred with the prophet Nathan who advised her to go see David and rehearse all that  king David had said to her concerning Solomon. We also face challenges which we attempt to solve headlong, instead of going to the word of God and standing on what God has said. By knowing and acting on what the Lord has said or done about that particular situation the problem would die a natural death. Certain problems need to be talked at the root, not the leaves. She went to the root of the problem and uprooted it once and for all and that was the end of the opposition that could have turned bloody.

ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE ROOT CAUSE (WHAT GOD HAS SAID) AND DEAL FROM THERE.

   CONFESSION

God’s word is the final rule on every matter of faith and conduct, as I stand on what it says every case is settled. Nothing in this universe can challenge the authority of the scriptures. By his word I am always a winner.

CHARACTER STUDY: KING DAVID 42

KEY SCRIPTURE: 1 Kings 1:1 ” Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat”.

We come to the latter end of King David’s life. The Bible said and King David was old and stricken in years. One of the blessings of God for his servants is long life. Exodus 23:25,26 reads “And you shall serve the Lord your God, and He shall bless thy bread and thy water: and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee… the number of thy days thou shall fulfill.”

One of the blessings of the servants of the Lord is a fulfillment of the number of their days. We would consider the experience of some of the fathers who served God in their lifetime.

1. Abraham… Genesis 25:8 “Then Abraham gave up the ghost and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people”.

2. Isaac… Genesis 35:29 “And Isaac gave up the ghost and died and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days.”

3. Jacob… Genesis 48:5 And he blessed Joseph and said, God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, and God which fed me all my life long unto this day.

Jacob was also very old, living to see Joseph’s two sons in the land of Egypt.

In Psalm 91:16, the Lord added that “he that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall be satisfied with long life. “With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.” Living long and fulfilling your years is one of the blessings God has ordained for his children. The promises of God in every aspect must first he known so you could claim or walk in it.

In the new covenant we see that although a number of the Apostles were martyred most of them fulfilled their days. When we consider a man like Paul, he went through so many life-threatening situations yet was never killed. He was even stoned, which I believe he died but was raised to l back to life (Acts 14:19). A viper hanged on his hand but shook it into the fire (Acts 28:5). None of these things could take his life until he had finished his journey and service. He said in 1st Timothy 4:6 ” For I am now ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand”. Dear child of God it is the purpose of God for his servants to fulfil their days and complete their assignments on earth, before departing. Know this truth and believe to see this in your case.

 CONFESSION

Long life is my portion, that I may fulfil every assignment God has ordained for me. Nothing shall push me out of this life before my time.

2 Timothy 4:6-8 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”

CHARACTER STUDY: KING DAVID 41.

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 24:24 ” And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.”

(Read 2nd Sam 24:24)

King David had caused Israel to be numbered. The Lord was wrought with the land of Israel. He gave David three options of punishments to choose from.

David was to choose from

1. Seven years of famine.

2. To be chased by enemies for three months

3. Three days of pestilence in the land.

King David decided that the Lord punish them with the pestilence. The Lord responded with a pestilence and about seventy thousand people died. Out of mercy the Lord asked the angel to stop yet God’s terms had not been fully met. The law says the soul that sins must die and without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins. A sacrifice had to be made so God’s terms of justice would be satisfied. Throughout the bible it is always sacrifices that satisfies God’s laws of justice and makes Him visit men with favors.

The prophet asked David to make an offering or sacrifice unto the Lord. David was to use the threshing floor of one Araunah to raise the sacrificial altar. The man came to king David and said, king David should take the land for free and the oxen as well. Such a thing would not have been a sacrifice anyway. Many children of God have not come to this understanding. Most of us do not make sacrifices at all. What is a sacrifice? A sacrifice is to willingly offer something dear to you. Any sacrifice void of these two ingredients is no sacrifice, that is ,1. willing, 2. Dear to you. An offering given to God which lacks these two aspects is no sacrifice. The Lord is only moved by sacrifice not just giving something.

David refused the offer of Araunah and said “No” the king replied Araunah “I will buy them from you full price. I won’t offer to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing”. So, David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for 50 shekels of silver. The bible continued that, he built an altar to the Lord there and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings. The Lord answered David’s prayers for the land and the pestilence on Israel was averted (2nd Samuel 24:24,25). Sacrifice is one of the very simple means to attract God’s favor. Make it your aim to be giving sacrifices always not just giving something. It means nothing to the Lord just to pick anything which does not cost or mean anything to you to offer unto the Lord expecting a bountiful response from Him. God loves cheerful givers and reward bountiful givers, bountifully. Are you a cheerful giver or a grudging one? Do you give bountifully or sparingly?

PRAYER

O God, may the church of God understand the important of sacrifice and know that It is the only way for a supernatural multiplication.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8 ” But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work”:

CHARACTER STUDY: KING DAVID 40

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 24:1 And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

In 2nd Samuel 24:1 the scripture read “And again the anger of the   Lord was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, go number Israel and Judah. When one reads the verse without comparing it to other verses and passages in the bible, he would easily conclude that God moved David to number the Israelites and he turned around to be angry with them. This does not make sense.

The whole picture is made clearer when we read 1st Chronicles 21:1. It reads “And Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel”. We now understand from this verse that the “he moved David” in 2nd Samuel 24:1, was not God but Satan which the first scripture was talking about but did not fully elaborate.

Why was the Lord God angry with David? We can get the answer from how the events unfolded. When David asked his military general to number his people or the soldiers, Joab told him that, this was not necessary for the Lord was able to make a multitude out of their numbers. This was how he said it. “And Joab said unto the king, now the Lord thy God add unto the people, how many soever they may be, and that the eyes of my Lord the king may see it: but why doth my Lord the king delight in this thing”. David acted out of unbelief. The Bible says whatsoever is not of faith is sin (Romans 14:23). Unbelief is the worst of all sins it denies God in every way. In this instant the bible clearly said Satan moved or provoked David to take this step; why then should God be angry with David and the Israelites as a whole? The word provoke means to “incite”, “instigate” or “entice”. This is different from compelling or to make one take an action. Satan only stirred up his desire and emotions by occupying his mind with the thought that doing these things is the only way out. David should have refused the thought or idea. Satan never makes people do wrong; he incites them to do wrong. It is only those who have been possessed by him that he forces them to do what he likes. These people do not have a will of their own. Note: most deliverance cases are not possessed people but either obsessed, oppressed or demonically tormented.

No one must ever blame Satan for making him or her do a wrong thing. Satan is the initiator of every temptation but never the executor of temptation. Man is always the executor of all wrong or evil acts. The child of God, born of God can always overcome Satan. Jesus was tempted on all points yet he never sinned. (Hebrews 4:15). One of the deceptions mankind has allowed and wrongly accepted is that we are men and are all liable to sin. The Christian is not just a man, he is a spirit living in the body of a man. Our Spirit is Christ (Galatians 2:20, Romans 8:9,10).

You are not just a man. You are a pure spirit living in a man’s body. Be led by the spirit and you shall not fulfil the desires of the flesh

         CONFESSION

I am a spirit living in a man’s body. The spirit leads me as my mind is focused on the word of God.

1 John 3:9 ” Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God”.

CHARACTER STUDY: KING DAVID 39

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 23:16 ” And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless, he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD”.

King David desired for water from the well of Bethlehem. The Philistines had formed their garrison or defense at Bethlehem. These three men, Adino, Eleazer and Shammah went against the host of the Philistines and broke through their ranks and went to fetch the water for king David.

King David took the water and said “……be it far from me, O Lord, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? Therefore, he would not drink”. (2nd Samuel 23:19). David was never a self-centered, pleasure seeking man. He valued and respected the lives of his men. The brave act of these three men warranted his praise and honour. His refusal to drink the water was a great sign of honour for these men.

Let us appreciate every act of love and kindness that others show to us. We should not be occupied with ourselves but acknowledge the grave sacrifices made by those who have done us the kind deed. No matter how simple or big it may be, the fact that, the person thought about you and made that sacrifice, you must appreciate and honour them or the person with your thanks or gratitude.

What made these men so fearless? They had seen this trait in David. They saw in David a man who feared God and had fear for nothing. They followed the faith of David and considered the end or results of his faith (Heb 13:7) The bible described all those  who came to follow David in 1st Samuel 22:2 as  follows “And every one that was in distress, and everyone that was in debt, and everyone that was discontented gathered themselves unto him, and he became captain over them….”. Out of these men who were in debt, distress and discontented were raised men of great impact. They were basically failures, yet they found in David a man who had faith in God. Character is always contagious. Be careful who you align with. Fearful people would put fear in you. Men of faith, would likewise stare in you, faith for exploits. Choose your associations well. Don’t fall into associations, choose your associations. Look for men with great qualities to pattern your life after. They should be men who love and are fearless and not self-centered people.

WHO IS YOUR FRIEND? WHO DO YOU LISTEN TO? WHAT KIND OF EXAMPLE DO YOU SEE? THAT IS WHAT YOU WOULD BECOME IF YOU ALLOW IT.

 PRAYER

Heavenly Father help your children to be very wise as to choose their friends rightly. May they follow after men of committed to doing your word.
