LESSONS FROM PSALM 23 PT 3

KEY SCRIPTURE: Psalms 23:3 KJV “He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

In our previous discussions, the Lord taught us that it is in submitting to him, that gives us the ability to receive the best from Him. Remember that in making us lie down, it is from the best pastures, greener pastures. He also leads us besides still waters. It is not the fast-flowing turbulent ones. This leads us to our next Fact to be established in this life. STRENGTHENING OF OUR INNER MAN.

A strong man is not just a man who has achieved a lot, but the ‘many difficulties or struggles that he has conquered.’

Your ability to conquer depends on how strong you are within your heart and mind. Prov 24:10 KJV” If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.” We are strengthened in our souls when we have received His instructions and obeyed them. God’s word when received builds us up. Acts 20:32 KJV “And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.” The man who feeds continually on the word would end up as very tough and rugged for God. He would not be easily moved. Isaiah 7:15 KJV Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. Honey and butter are all symbols of the glorious word of God. It says, that as He partakes of them, He would know how to choose right from wrong. The biggest challenge is having the ability to choose or act rightly all the time.

The same verse 3 of Psalm 23, says He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Remember that, the path of the Just, is as a shining light, that shines, brighter and brighter, unto the perfect day, Prov 4:18.  The way of the wicked are as darkness, they do not know when they stumble. It is always the enlightened who walk upright and as a result, are established. The soul of a man is the self-conscious part of him. It forms a man’s personality. It is a combination of the mind or intellect, emotions, and will or volition. A person who is not privileged to feed on the right words, or refuses truth but feeds on lies would not have a strong.

mind. This lying word distorts his emotions, making him, fearful jittery, or easily worried. His actions or will, will be very wrong. He would surely lead a very difficult life. This should not be your portion. Take time daily to eat the balanced meal of scripture, so you will be strengthened in your inner man, to stand strong against all the turbulent tides of this life.

CONFESSIONS

Doing the word of God strengthens my inner man. I can stand against the storms of life because I am a doer of the word of God. The engraved word that saves my soul.

THOUGHT: THE DEPTH OF YOUR ROOTS IN GOD, DETERMINES YOUR STRENGTH AGAINST DIFFICULTIES.

KEY SCRIPTURE: Psalms 23:2 KJV He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

We continue with our study from Psalm 23, in considering the six facts for establishment in life. We now look at the second fact. That is SUBMIT TO DIVINE GUIDANCE.

Guidance is like walking in the light, you don’t stumble. Jesus said the following in John 11:9 ‘Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walks in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.” The sun remains a guide in the daytime. In the abundance of the sun’s light, anyone who decides to shut his eyes would walk in darkness. The psalmist used the phrase, “He maketh me to lie down means he allows himself to be controlled. In Proverbs 4:20, the scriptures said, attend to my words, incline thine ear unto my sayings. It means submit your will to my instructions. That is the only means for one to be guided in this world of sin and evil.

When a man follows his own path, he will end up in shame and failure. Prov 14: 12 reads” There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death”. Man’s thoughts potentially disagree with God’s thoughts and ways Isaiah, 55:7, but God’s ways are always the best. Submit to his way. Prov 3:6-7 admonishes us to “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding in all your ways acknowledge Him. And He shall direct your path.” You cannot fail following diligently after Him. The writer of our daily bread once wrote that God would lead you around, but He would lead you aright.

Your power to overcome the enemy is to submit to God’s counsel. James 4:7 says,” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Satan is extremely helpless before the man who has submitted to God. Remember the Centurion in Matt 8:7 -10, who said I am a man under authority, and I say to my servant go and he goes. Why does he have the authority to command a servant? Because he has submitted to the authority of the emperor who is in Rome. Submit to God’s authority, and Satan can’t touch you. Satan would be at our command. The problems in life, although human causes are mostly initiated by devils. You can cast these devils out if you would listen to do what God is saying Never be stubborn towards the voice of God. You would be breaking the second fact, that leads to an established life. Take this last scripture Prov. 29:1 NET “The one who stiffens his neck after numerous rebukes will suddenly be destroyed without remedy.”

CONFESSION

The Lord is my shepherd, I follow after Him. My own ways are death and destruction. I listen attentively to His instructions and do as He says. He leads me rightly every time Thank you, Jesus.

THOUGHT: FOLLOWING GOD IS OBEYING GOD.

LESSONS FROM PSALM  23

KEY SCRIPTURE: Psalms 23:1 KJV “A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

The twenty-third Psalm is one of the most popular of all the psalms. The Psalm gives us certain six facts for one to be established in this life. Each verse gives one of the points. These facts or points are as follows.

1. ACKNOWLEDGING GOD, FOR WHO HE IS TO YOU. VRS 1

2. SUBMIT TO DIVINE GUIDANCE. VRS 2

3. RECEIVE STRENGTH IN YOUR INNER MAN. VRS 3

4. ASSURANCE TO FACE ALL SITUATIONS. VRS 4

5. BLESSINGS OVERFLOW. VRS 5

6. SURE FAVOUR AND ESTABLISHMENT.

These are six facts that the twenty-third Psalm teaches us.

Now the first fact.

ACKNOWLEDGING GOD, FOR WHO HE IS.

Misery or fulfillment is a result of who God is to you.

It reads God or the Lord is my shepherd. Every disturbed, worried, or sorrowful person is either the shepherd of his own life or a creature he calls his shepherd. Rom 1:23,” And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.”

The act of having anything in place of our heavenly father is called idolatry.

You cannot truly relate with God until you acknowledge Him for who He is in your life.

The shepherd does not exist because of the sheep, but the sheep exist because of the shepherd. You and I are the sheep and must be fully submissive to the shepherd in every way. The shepherd gives his best, to sustain the sheep.

Now your shepherd is the Monarch or King of the universe.

He is all-powerful Gen 28:3,

He is the faithful God Deut 7:9,

He is all-knowing Ps 139:4

He is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all. 1 John 1:5

The knowledge of all the above means you would not want. No good shepherd keeps any good thing from his sheep. With God as your shepherd, you can confidently say, you would not want any good thing. Rom 8:32 “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

Note: Your ability to receive from Him, depends on how restful you are in the light of the knowledge of who He is. If God is your shepherd, then every fretting must stop.

CONFESSION

God, the Almighty, all-knowing, all-wise, and loving creator of all things is my shepherd. I am not concerned about needs of any kind. As my shepherd, He is the most important person in my life. My life is His. I am alive for Him, and my life is meaningful to me

THOUGHT: LET GOD BE GOD, AND CHALLENGES WOULD BE NOTHING TO YOU.

[03:36, 15/04/2024] Ps Doris Somuah Asante: SIMPLE TRUTH

YOUR TRUE FAMILY

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matt 12:49 KJV “And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!”

The Lord Jesus is our grand example in every aspect of life. His approach to all things is God’s approved way to relate to that thing. We would for today, consider His mindset concerning His parents and siblings.

In our key scripture, the Lord was busily teaching a group of people, while someone came to Him and said, master, your mother and brethren are seeking to speak to you. The very normal reaction would have been, for Him to excuse the audience for a moment and then go listen to whatever they had for Him. This was not the case. He rather made the following landmark statement. Matt 12:48 KJV” But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!” The Lord Jesus at this point was not making nonsense of the Law that commands us to honour parents, but placing that great importance on taking God’s word first and doing it. The Lord said He came to fulfill the law yet pleasing God always came first.

What has always pertained is to attend to our family and do what they require. In some cases, their demands are contrary to the way and counsel of God. Now let’s consider the Lord’s criterion for being His disciple. Luke 14:26 KJV “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”

Once again, the Lord establishes that placing God the Father first in everything is the highest divine order of priorities in this life. He said if we do not love God the Father above our families and even our own lives, we can’t be His disciples.

Do the above events mean that Jesus had nothing to do with the family? The Lord was indeed very close to His family. In John 7:1-5 we see His siblings discussing with Him, about going to the feast of Tabernacles.  Secondly, when the Lord hanged on the cross, He asked John to take care of His mother and treat her as her very mother. This meant He never neglected His sonship duties to His mother.

In this study, we have learned that it is our duty as sons, and daughters to honour our parents, yet, we must always place our love for God above everyone including ourselves.

CONFESSION

God is the reason for us being alive, and so I place Him above my family and myself. I do play my role of honouring my parents and my siblings as well.

THOUGHT: IT IS ALWAYS GOD FIRST BEFORE FAMILY.

John 7:3 KJV “His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.”

THE ACTIVIST

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 2:17 KJV “And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.”

An activist is a militant reformer. We have encountered such activists in men or women who stage a revolution. Such men are fearless and ready to die to achieve their course of bringing the change they desire.

The Lord Jesus came at such a time that the Israelites had a history of going through cycles of hoping from exile to hardships because they broke the laws of God. This was the reason for the synagogues and the evolution of the pharisaic group that taught God’s laws, so they would not enter into those punishments. As a result of this, they established the Pharisaic group who were the custodians and teachers of the law that would make them obey God’s laws and not incur His judgment when they broke the law. Unfortunately, these Pharisees and the high priest made the practice of the law a tradition of men. The Lord Jesus came to establish a new order of relating to God. It was also a new covenant. The Pharisaic order, coupled with the Roman administration was very tall for Him to overcome. He needed to be very strong and tough to penetrate this order and establish the new WAY.

He needed to be resolute and set His face as a flint. Isaiah 50:7 KJV “For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore, shall I not be confounded: therefore, have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.” Flint is a very hard rock. From the very first time, He started His ministry to the final day He died; He was faced with hostilities. They were constantly at His heels to cause Him to err against the Roman regime or the law of God. The story of our key scripture is about The Lord Jesus, who made a whip to drive out all those who were selling and changing money in the temple. He overturned their tables and cleaned up the temple.

He was not in any way afraid of their faces. He told them the truth always. Herod who killed John the Baptist, could not intimidate Him. Luke 13:32 KJV “And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.”

He was totally given to doing the will of God and so when Peter rebuked Him about not going to the cross, He addressed Peter as Satan who perverted the way of God but exalted the ways of men. Matt 16:21-24

The Lord boldly went to the cross to suffer such shame because He came to establish a new order. What do we learn from His example?

As our Lord resolutely went about in His era to bring such great change to the whole world, we must likewise be resolute in propagating goodness with all the urgency and sacrifice it deserves. The first disciples or apostles did as Jesus did, and were so successful, we must challenge ourselves and commit our lives to this call. We are ACTIVISTS FOR JESUS.

CONFESSION

The student is never greater than the master.  As the Lord selflessly committed His life to achieve so much for the Father, so do I commit my life, to also be an activist, challenging the standards Satan has set in place to influence humanity.

THOUGHT: A PLANTED LIFE WILL ALWAYS MULTIPLY RESULTS.

Matt 10:24 KJV “The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.”

John 12:24 KJV “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit.

JESUS, THE FRIENDLY LEADER

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 15:15 KJV” Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”

The Lord Jesus was a very diligent leader who was very serious with whatever He did. Despite His diligence to duty, He found time to relate to His disciples in a very cordial way. He got the best out of them because He never broke the laws of God. He said I sanctify myself so they may be sanctified. He was a real motivation to them in all things. In Paul’s letter to Timothy, He encouraged him not to make anyone despise His youth, but to be an example,

1 Tim 4:12 KJV “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

The Lord was also an example to His disciples. They were even prepared to die like He died.

We see the friendliness in the master when He called His disciples. He has some of them nicknames. Mark 3:17 KJV “And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:”

In John 13:23 the bible said one of His disciples leaned on his chest. Can you imagine a leader who was so close to His disciples in such a way? Even Judas dipped his bread into the bowl of the master when they were eating. John 13:18. In our key scripture He says He no longer calls His disciples, servants or slaves, but friends because He has made everything known to them.

As I said in the first paragraph, it is breaking God’s laws or words that make leaders lose their authority. Despite this, a leader cannot stoop so low, in such a way that His subordinates tend to despise his authority. In light of the above explanations, what makes friendship leadership very important? Good associations help in building loyal relationships. It only takes a devil to become disloyal, as Judas did. The bible called him a devil. Good associations help in passing on information or ideas on the heart of the leader to his associates quickly and more easily. Such information flows fast, and they learn a lot from the leader. The Lord Jesus taught His disciples more in an informal way than a formal one. As he walked along with them, He shared important teachings with them. They also asked questions without being afraid of Him. Jesus truly loved His disciples.

What makes leaders relate on cordial levels with their associates? The answer is Humility. It takes a humble mind to relate in a very cordial and friendly way with your associates. Those who maintain a stern bossy face soon lose their associates. The man may not break away but might have broken away in his heart.

PRAYER.

Dear Father, I pray for all leaders to be real examples to their associates, yet very friendly as well to them. May they play these two roles to perfection.

CALLED TO MANIFEST ONLY GOOD WORKS

KEY SCRIPTURE: Eph 2:10 KJV “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

We are living at a time when times are not normal, yet the child of God must never lose sight of who He or she is. Our key scripture says we have been created from the very nature of our Lord Jesus. This is revealed in the teaching of the vine and the branches. The branch is made from whatever the vine is made from John 15:1-16. This scriptural revelation shows us that we should never accept any condition, or words about ourselves, that are contrary to who we are.

As workers in any establishment, you are the light, you are the truth, and you are the hope of the place. Do not allow any pressure whatsoever to allow you to conform to any contrary lifestyle. Some believers who go out of their family locations to new places to work begin to live very differently from their calling as Christians. Some always leave the place having babies with other women. It is rather amazing that, at the funerals of certain men, different women come along with children, claiming they were fathered by that brother. This is very different from who you are. Living this way, would find yourself in hell fire. Our key scripture says you are the workmanship of God, you have been created in Christ Jesus for only good works.

The Lord knew He was on earth to do good works. He said I am the light of the world. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil. Acts 10:38.

The Lord showed us that to bear fruit or to do good works, we must abide in Him. Maintain your fellowship, through prayer, bible reading, and study, bible meditation, fellowshipping with other Christians, and doing all that you learn. Daily affirm that you are the light of the world. Affirm also that, no wrong act will proceed from your life. Tell yourself you will overcome every evil condition with good. When others are mischievous decide you would exhibit the life of the Spirit. Forgive those who walk in the flesh and do negative things. In moments of temptation to act out of anger, quickly tell yourself, I am of the Spirit and cannot manifest anything wrong. Your words will always rule you.

CONFESSION

I am made to manifest only good things. Nothing makes me do wrong or walk in the flesh. I live in the Spirit and produce acts of the Spirit. I have a great life of love, peace, success, health, and prosperity.

THOUGHT: ACCEPT THAT YOU LIVE TO MANIFEST ONLY GOOD WORKS, AND THAT WOULD BE YOUR EXPERIENCE.

THE QUALIFICATIONS OF A DISCIPLE

KEY SCRIPTURE: Luke 14:26 KJV If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

In our key scripture, the Lord laid bare His qualification terms for one to be called a disciple. He says you will not be part of Him if you do not adhere to what He presented. He said to be His disciple, you must hate your father, mother, wife or husband, children, siblings, and your very life.  The Lord added that His disciples must take up His cross and follow Him. Your cross is not anything He has redeemed us from like our sins, sicknesses, or poverty, but anything that has to do with choosing His way as against choosing our way. It means He must come first in all that we choose to do.

The Lord does not just make empty demands but whatever He tells us comes from His love for us as well as His wisdom that surpasses all things. The Christian life is purely a spiritual life that could not be led by any man in his natural capacity as a man. Plucking your heart from every other thing to love the Master gives Him the right to live His life through us. In Matt. 10:40 the Lord added that when a man has fulfilled the demand to love Him above all other things, He said in verse 40 that “He that receiveth you receiveth me and he that receiveth me receiveth the one who sent me”

What is the meaning of this statement?

It means the child of God who accepts to love the Lord above himself and every other thing has entered into a covenant relationship with Him.

Remember he loved us above Himself to die for us and we must also love Him above ourselves to complete that covenant pact of really becoming one with Him.

When we believe in Him, we are one with Him yet it becomes practical and experiential when we also love Him above ourselves. This cements our relationship with Him and we will be ready to believe in Him under any condition. Until this is done, He can’t stand for you because you have not crossed the death line. Please note I don’t mean dying physically, but rather dying in your heart and mind to yourself, your family, and the world. It is only by your death that you can partake of Him and everything that belongs to Him.

CONFESSION:

Dear lord Jesus, I accept to love you above myself, my relations, and my interests and also to carry my cross every day of my life. Thank you, Lord, for bringing me unto a solid covenant pact with you.

THOUGHT: TO LOVE THE LORD ABOVE EVERY OTHER THING RELEASES US INTO TRUE ONENESS WITH JESUS.

Matt 10:37 KJV “He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”

THE PATH OF THE JUST

KEY SCRIPTURE: Prov 4:18 KJV” But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.”

Who is the just? The just are those who live by trusting God. Heb 10:38 KJV” Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draws back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him”. The just also means, those whose ways please the Lord, since they live by faith according to Heb 11:6. The just also have righteousness being imputed on their account. Romans 4:3 KJV” For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.”

From the above, we learn that they just walk in the ways or according to the word of God. They take time to learn from God’s word 2 Tim 2:15 KJV” Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” He is not put to shame because, through study or diligence he has come to know the right ways of life, and therefore treads thereby. He has a lamp unto his feet and a light unto his path. He does not stumble, for He is like the man whom Jesus said walks in the day, and so has the light of the day. John 11:9 KJV” Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walks in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.”

Our key scripture says His way, is like the shining light, that keeps shining unto the perfect day.

The path of the just is the way of rest. He does not fret about what happens around Him. This man constantly celebrates the Lord for His victories which is his victory as well. The just has a continuous stream of victory.

The Bible is full of characters who threaded on the path of the just. One such man was King David. He wrote the Lord is my shepherd, and so I shall not want.  He added, thou I walk through the valley of the shadows of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. King David lived His life in the presence of God and kept shining till he left the earth scene. David fought several battles and lost none David came into the limelight because he trusted God when he fought Goliath. His way was the path of the just. The Bible taught that the way of the wicked is as darkness, they know not when they stumble. The wicked are not necessarily the murderers, but they would not trust in the Lord. Live your in the word and enjoy an abundance of God’s light

CONFESSION

I live and walk on the path of the just. My life is simply based and dependent on the infallible word of God. He keeps me winning daily until that perfect day when we Shall meet in glory.

TIME TO BE GLORIFIED

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 17:1 KJV” These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:’

I was once in a meeting in which the speaker for that night prayed and said, “Father glorify me that I may also glorify you” I asked myself what does this man mean by such a statement or prayer? I also think he picked the whole idea from our key scripture. I believe that asking the Father to glorify him meant, God should work miracles to show His approval of him. This is not wrong. It is not proper for any man to ask the Father to glorify him. We do nothing for our glory, but for the Lord to be glorified. If God uses a man to work miracles, it is never a sign of him being glorified. Working miracles reveals God’s glory. God is the one who always confirms the words of men to bring glory to His name. The Holy Spirit is in you to glorify Jesus.

When we were born again, He glorified us by seating us in Christ, far above all principalities and powers. Eph 2:6 KJV “And hath raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” (Read Rom 8:29)

The Lord had come to the end of His ministry on earth and needed to take back His glory as God, so He prayed to the Father as follows.  “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.” When He walked the shores of this earth, He lived as a man who trusted and depended on the Holy Spirit in all that He said and did.

One may ask, why did the Lord have to ask the Father to glorify Him, since it was obvious that the Father would glorify Him? He said this prayer to the hearing of His disciples for one main reason.

This prayer establishes the fact that He is God. The Lord knew very well that His deity would be greatly contended by many, yet it was a very important truth for everyone who seeks to follow Him to accept.

Everyone who reads this prayer will cease to have any doubts about His deity.

THOUGHT: JESUS IS GOD, AND ALL MEN MUST KNOW IT.
