KEY SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 6:1-2 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise ;)”

Our key scripture speaks to all children to obey their parents in the Lord. In the Lord means, so long as what they ask you to do, honours God.

The scripture added that every child should honour their father and mother, this is the first of the commandments with promise. The promise is that, it may be well with you and also live long in the land.

Our parents are authorities God has set over us. Romans 13:1 says “Let every soul be subjected unto the powers. For there is no power but of God…” To live under authority is to be subjected to God. It is to the good of anyone to be subjected to the authorities God has set over him. When we refuse to be obedient to our parents, it is called rebellion. The word of God says rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft (1st Samuel 15:23). Rebellion opposes the very thrown of God. It always attracts a curse. The curse for disobeying our parents is early death and a miserable life. Children this is very serious. Now learn this secret, to receive an impartation of long life, please honour the aged. The Bible says honour your father and mother, so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life.

The command is to obey them in the Lord. It is rather strange that a parent would ask you to do something against God. This happens in certain cultures where the knowledge of God is not acknowledged. In certain places it becomes an offence to worship God. Children of such parents may be restricted from worshiping the Lord. Some may not be allowed to go to church. On all these things the child would have to keep faith with God. He must not do what the parents may be demanding. Some parents may demand that their daughters go for boy friends who would cater for them.

All these things are sins before God and Christian children must do what the word of God says instead.  We must obey our parents but in the Lord.

As a child, I am blessed when I remain obedient to my parents in the Lord. I would always honour them and please then according to the word of God.

James 4:6 “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble”

Colossians 3:20 “Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord”.
