KEY SCRIPTURE: John 19:40 ” Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury”.
Our Lord Jesus after His death on the cross was buried. Apostle Paul speaking about the gospel said in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 that ” For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” he added, ” …and he was buried “
Just as His crucifixion was important, His burial was also very significant.
Some people have tried to argue that the Lord was not dead, that is the reason he claims to have resurrected. In our previous study we realised the soldiers pierced his side into the heart giving out blood and water. This revealed he had died. Pilate also agreed to give out the body of Jesus to be buried after the centurion assured him that Jesus was dead. (Mk 15:44,45)
The scripture said he was embalmed with spices that weighed almost a 100pds. (Jn 19:39) By this embalmment he would have died if he had not.
Jesus was placed in the new tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.
Through his burial the body of sin was buried. (Romans 6:6). Romans 8:2 also reveals that “for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death”. We were made free during His burial. The Lord Jesus was physically buried. Those who buried him knew the one they were handling. It was not the soldiers who buried him.
In his burial certain events took place. We see these acts in the following verses. Ephesians 4:9,10 “Now that he ascended, what is it, but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth. He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens that he might fill all things”. These verses refer to when the Lord descended into hell and overpowered Satan, seizing the keys of death and hell from him. Colossians 2:15 also says “And having spoiled principalities and powers he made a show of them openly triumphing over them”. The book of Hebrews 2:14 also reveals that “for as much then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood he also likewise, took part of the same, that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, THAT IS THE devil”. All these took place in the moment of his death and burial. Revelation 1:18 has this to say “I am he that liveth and was dead and behold I am alive for evermore. Amen and have the keys of hell and of death”.
All these feats were points to show believers victory over Satan. All these took place during His burial. We have triumphed over the devil because our Lord Jesus died and was buried.
The death of Jesus spells my absolute victory over the devils. He defeated Satan for me when he was buried. Thank you, Lord.
Colossians 2:11-12 ” In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”
Romans 6:4 ” Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
