KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 6:16 KJV “Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.”
Fasting is not an option but a responsibility for every Christian. In our key scripture the Lord made it clear by His choice of words. He did not say if you fast, but rather when you fast. This makes it a duty and a must for every child of God to fast. In Matthew 9:14, the disciples of John the Baptist asked Jesus why his disciples did not fast? The following was the Lord’s answer Matt 9:15 KJV” And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.” From His answer: now that the Lord is not physically present with us, every Christian is supposed to fast.
Why must the Christian fast?
1.Food is the number one crave of all flesh. Fasting therefore breaks its power over man and sets him free to attend to God.
2. Fasting strengthens your desire for whatever you are praying about.
3. Fasting brings an increased focus on God, and it builds confidence and trust in God to get your answers. Matt 17:21
4 Fasting renews both spiritual and physical strength to do better in life (Isaiah 40:28—31)
5. Fasting and prayer increases spiritual sensitivity
6 Fasting and prayer can generate supernatural power for exploits (Luke 4:14–16)
There is no man of God, the Lord is working through powerfully these days who did not spend days fasting. Great outpouring of the Spirit has been preceded by seasons of fasting and prayer. (Acts 2:1–3)
7. Fasting can help children of God break away from wrong appetites that hold them bound. (Psalm 35:13)
8.Fasting and prayer will break the yoke of the enemy and set the oppressed free (Isaiah 58:6)
9 Proper Fasting will bring healing to sicknesses that seems to refuse all kinds of natural attention (Isaiah 58:8)
10 Fasting and prayer improves one’s relationship with God. (Isaiah 58:9)
11. Fasting and prayer will generate a revival of people and generations’ commitment to God (Isaiah 58:12)
In the light of all that has been said above, fasting coupled with prayer should become a usual practice of every Christian
Thank you, heavenly father for the privilege of fasting and prayer. My spiritual and physical life is greatly improved and difficult barriers in my life are overcome as I fast and pray.
Luke 2:37 KJV ” And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fasting and prayers night and day”.
Isaiah 58:12 KJV ” And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in”.
