LESSONS FROM THE FIG TREE: 1 ACCOUNTABILITY

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 21:19 (KJV). “And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever.  And presently the fig tree withered away.”

The Lord Jesus as a man was hungry. He saw a fig tree with lots of leaves expecting to find some figs on it, but was woefully disappointed. He cursed the fig tree, to die, and indeed it died. Please don’t think Jesus was harsh on the tree. He is the Lord of glory and knows everything about that particular tree. It failed when it’s Judge came to it requiring it pass the test of destiny, yet it failed. There is a day of accountability for all men and you would be expected to pass with excellence. Everyday is a moment of probation to take the right actions and produce your best against that day.

The following is what God says about that day of accountability. “Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”— Acts 17:31 (KJV) God has set a day to judge all men. Jesus is the appointed judge, and he would judge in righteousness. Beloved are you ready for that day of reckoning? Your days of passing the test is now. You cannot make any amends after you are dead. After death is judgment (Heb 9:27)

The fig tree can be likened to the man who keeps postponing the day of his salvation. Such people in their hearts of hearts think that a future judgment is a hoax. Please just consider the scripture in Acts 17. He said God has given us the assurance of the impending judgment by raising Jesus from the dead. Jesus’ death and resurrection is an undeniable fact of history. If His resurrection among other things is a sign that we would be judged by Him, then do not deceive yourself. Now listen to this proverb, ‘if the grain of a planted maize, germinated, then the fruit is a matter of time’

THOUGHT: You have everything to regret, if you fail to be prepared, only to find yourself before Jesus, the judge.
