DRINK FOR THE THIRSTY

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 7:37 KJV” In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”

Throughout the scriptures, God has consistently shown that He accepts and blesses those who mean business with Him. He says He rewards those who are diligent seekers Heb 11:6.One natural condition that creates a sense of seriousness and urgency is thirst. We may also add hunger. Any thirsty person strives to quench that thirst. It is approached with every sense of urgency, commitment and zeal. The Spirit says in Luke 1:53 ” He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.’ The preceding verse is a very interesting one. Mary the mother of Jesus spoke these words by the inspiration of the Spirit. She said, God has filled the hungry with lots of good things, but has sent the rich empty away. The rich are those who fill satisfied with what they have. They do not have any sense of need to be diligent about Godly things. God has no business with such people. The hungry are striving to be satisfied, and so would passionately seek, strive and pray

Prayer is said to be strong depending on the intensity of the desire backed by your faith. James 5:16 from the AMPLIFIED Bible reads, the effectual fervent (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man availeth much, and makes tremendous power available. It is all about being thirsty for answers or satisfaction. The thirsty individual has a void in him that needs to be filled. He is not settled, happy, comfortable until that void is filled. Everyone who would scale spiritual heights should be thirsty for a deeper level of encounter with the Spirit of God. The Lord said, it is those who hunger and thirst for righteousness who would be satisfied. Zeal is a virtue propelled by some hunger or a thirst in the soul. Complacency always robs people of that heart longing to go higher, do more or overcome challenges and become truly successful

How can one generate this sense of thirst or hunger in the soul?

1. Turn away from carnal pursuits. The carnal man values no spiritual thing, and so would not go for it.

2. Give attention to spiritual or godly things, through reading, listening inspired preaching or watching preaching videos or miracle services.

3. Give attention to scriptural readings and study. 2 Tim 2:15.

4. Pray passionately about various topics. The passion in your soul will become a thirst or hunger for that particular thing.

5. Positive desires die when they are neglected. Make sure you are persistent and kicking out anything that waters down your aspirations.

THOUGHT:  IT IS ONLY THE THIRSTY ONES WHO ARE ABLE TO TAKE FROM GOD’S ABUNDANCE.

THE LORD’S CALLING

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 7:37 KJV” In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”

The feast of tents or tabernacle reached the final day, that is the eight day. There were certain ceremonies which was observed on this day. According to bible historians, on the last day they abstained from all Seville labour and regarded it as a holy day Lev.23:29.

The eight day was a time they finished reading the law to the people.

There was also a special ceremony that they performed on this day. The priest filled a golden vial with water drawn from the pool of Siloam (John 9:7) This water was carried with great solemnity, attended with the blowing of trumpets, through the gate of the temple, and being mixed with wine, was poured on the sacrifice on the altar.

The origin of this ceremony was not known, since it was certain that Moses did not command such a thing to be observed.

The Lord’s shout whiles they observed the ceremony was to call off their attention from a rite that was not commanded, which could also not offer eternal life, to turn to Himself who was the right fountain of eternal life. He cried revealing that He is the true source of life. John 4:13-14, Jesus answered and said unto her, “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

Today the Lord keeps crying and calling on you to turn from all the supposed sources of hope of satisfaction, salvation, fulfillment but have all failed men.

1. One of such hope for satisfaction has been pleasure. Many have chased various pleasurable engagements, yet have been miserably disappointed. King Solomon who had the money, power and means to pursue pleasure to it heights said all is vanity. You who have been pursuing it, also know it is vanity.

2. Wealth and Fame: Alexander the great, before he died, asked that his great riches be used to cover the road to show that we came to the world empty, and would leave same. Wealth and fame has not satisfied the many who placed their hope in it.

3. Religion has been the pursuit of many, seeking to be satisfied, yet these people, have no rest in their souls. They are constantly filled with contention and internal misery. Only the person Jesus can give that satisfaction.

Nothing of human pursuit has really satisfied any man. Jesus is the only one who can really satisfy the thirst and hunger in your soul. Turn away from all the superficial things like the Jews did to the real living and life-giving Saviour, Jesus, the Christ.

THOUGHT: EVERY OTHER THING IN LIFE, THAT PROMISED SALVATION HAS BEEN A MIRAGE, ONLY JESUS IS THE TRUE MIRACLE.

EVIL MEN

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 7:32 KJV “The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him”.

Dear patrons of this devotional, we are still looking at a walk with Jesus through the gospels.

We continue with the discourse of our Lord Jesus with the Jews at the feast of Tabernacle. When the Jewish leaders heard the positive remarks about Jesus, they sent some officers to pick Him. Please, know that, so long as you decide to do right, your success may engineer the envy or anger of others. This should not make you hate them. Just prepare your mind for such conditions.2Ti 3:13 KJV “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” These things are going on all around us. The death of Abel resulted from a similar event. Gen 4:1-8.

Be careful you are not tempted to become an evil person.

An evil personality begins from self-worship, or self-centeredness.

He asks, why is it the other person and not me? You are not alone in this life and must appreciate the efforts of others. Every evil man is a tool or weapon in Satan’s hands.

He would surely waste you up immediately he finishes using you to hurt others. Satan has no sense of keeping anything good or well. He is a person who knows no good thing, but to destroy and cause pain. John 10:10

How do we react or respond to such evil men? The Lord just told them God’s agenda or program for His life. He did not respond to them out of fear, or insults. ” Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.” John 7:33. He knew what God had said to Him, and so, He just iterated it. It is always very important to know what God has said to you about certain events. Never speak the language of the devil.

Every utterance dominated by fear is the devil’s words.

Never beg the devil to have mercy on you. It is a way of giving yourself into the devil’s hands. It also means you do not trust the Lord to protect you.

Your strength before the devil or his people is the word of God.

Satan or his people do not know mercy.

They would always submit to the power of God. God’s power accompanies words spoken in faith. Always build a very strong relationship with God, through fellowship and practicing the word of God.

OUR PURPOSE- SAVING THE LOST

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 7:31 KJV “And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?”

The Jews opposed, argued and threatened the Lord, yet at the end of the day, the scriptures said, many of the people believed on the Lord Jesus. This was the main purpose for which He came into this life. Believing on Him is receiving eternal life. (John 1:12,3:16) The Lord faced all these contradictions to have His joy fulfilled. Heb 12:2 KJV” Looking⁹ unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” What is that joy? According Isaiah 53:11, the Lord shall see the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied, and by His knowledge He would justify many. This was His joy, the salvation or justification of many. All the pain, disgrace and reproaches were worth going through, so long as lives were transformed.

What are you losing to get men saved? Many have sacrificed so much to get the gospel to our part of the world. The gospel was first sent to Europe by the early Christians through great sacrifices. This brought civilization to Europe. The Europeans came as missionaries and brought the gospel to Africa in the midst of all kinds of dangers (there were some who were not missionaries but came solely for commerce). Malaria which had no known cure killed many of them. Yellow fever was another culprit. Inspite of all these, what do we see now? Many people in Africa have come to believe on Jesus. The presence of the gospel in our part of the world has been a great blessing to Africa. Some people attribute poverty in Africa to the church. This is the most unfortunate analysis for anyone to make.

The problem of Africa is simply poor leadership.

If African leaders were to practice a quarter of the teachings of Jesus, Africa would have been leading the world economies

I ask my question again what would you have to sacrifice to see men saved?

1. Sacrifice your comfort by seeking the face of God in intercessory prayers. Col 4:12, Gal 4:19

2. Sacrifice your money to get the gospel to the many who have not had the privilege of hearing the gospel. Ps 67:2

3. Sacrifice your time to send the gospel to your neighbours within your community and beyond Matt 28:19,20

4. Sacrifice your pride as people may ridicule you, because of the gospel. Some may physically attack. Count it all joy if you have to suffer for the name of Jesus.

THOUGHT: THE GREATEST JOY OF EVERY CHRISTIAN IS TO SEE SOULS SAVED.

GOD’S HOUR

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 7:30 KJV ” Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.”

This issue of God’s timing must be considered more seriously.

God our father has specific plans with time lines for every one of His children.

When Prophet Samuel was the judge of Israel, the Israelites requested to be given a king. Samuel prayed and spoke to the Lord about it. The Lord gave him the kind of problems that the king would bring to them. The following is what the people told Samuel.1Sa 8:20 KJV” That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.” The verse 19 said they disobeyed the voice of Samuel and insisted they wanted their own king.

By their action God had no hour for them.

The Lord reluctantly accepted their choice. This is called permissive will of God.

During the time of Jesus God had His hour for the Lord Jesus. No one could alter it.

Many difficulties that certain children of God go through come as a result of their unwillingness to accept God’s way.

There have been some ministers of God who left the scene of ministry rather early because they failed to stop teaching certain heresies that the Holy Spirit prompted them to stop teaching. In some cases, the Lord asked others to warn them, yet they kept teaching error. I know of one who died through a very horrible motor accident. A blind minister friend of mine said he mysteriously became blind after resisting the call into the ministry. Dear one, it is not God who brings such tragedies to such people.

When a man blatantly resists God’s will, he or she loses every divine timing and falls within God’s permissive will.

In the permissive will, God has first permitted the individual to go his way and so He would likewise permit any contrary power that intends to attack you. Prov. 1:25,26 KJV But ye have set at naught all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:  I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

Dear child of God, be careful you do not lose God’s hour for your life. Dear one the laws and instructions of God are not grievous.

In actual fact they are perfect laws for your liberty.

James 1:25. Decide to obey whatever He tells you. So long as you know it is His voice, ‘break’ every resistance to obey it. Prov 4:13 KJV” Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.” Choose life by sticking to God’s instruction for your life.

YOUR HOUR

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 7:30 KJV: “Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.”

David, Father Jesse’s last son was anointed King during the reign of King Saul, yet he did not ascend the throne, because his hour was not up. He had to wait for a couple of years before it was time to become king of Israel.

There is always a specific timing when God’s program may be fully executed. It is your set time or your hour for God’s special program for you to be established. Can Satan interfere with God’s schedule for any of God’s children? The answer to this question is no and yes. It is no if that child of God lives under divine instructions. If he or she lives to obey the voice of the Spirit then Satan or his angels cannot interfere with his life in any way. Such a one lives in God’s perfect will and the devil has no place in his life.

On the other hand, it is a big yes, if that individual should live to please Himself. In such times God is compelled to break his word allowing the enemy to go ahead and do what He intends to do. Such a person is living in the permissive will of God.

The Lord said to Joshua in Joshua 1:5″ There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Although God gave such a solemn promise to Israel, they were defeated in their second battle, by a rather small town called Ai. Joshua 7:1-7. God’s program was an absolute victory in every battle yet, they were miserably disgraced. Why did God’s word fail? Achan had defiled the camp of Israel by stealing an accursed thing. Satan had the access to interfere with God’s will and bring them defeat. There are some Christians who may even lose their lives through demonic attacks. This is not in any way God’s hour for them. The Lord counseled his disciples and every one of us to watch and pray, so we would not enter into temptations. A temptation may be a condition that your strength may not be ready to face. The condition may overwhelm and destroy you. You must heed the master’s advice and watch and pray always.

Our key scripture said they could not lay their hands on Jesus because His hour was not up. The Lord walked in step with the Holy Spirit. He said my father is always with me, because I always do that which pleases Him. The Lord was never lazy to pray. Heb 5:7 KJV ” Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared”; He did not live His life as one on a fun fare, but one in a real warfare. Just consider the way He prayed. He did not give place to laziness.

KNOWING GOD

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 7:29 KJV” But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.”

A W TOZER wrote: God is the great unseen reality. Man’s unrelenting search for reality, is in the search for God. Unfortunately, he searches for God, with the wrong approach. God is a Spirit; He cannot be known through the senses. Everyman who truly finds God, instantly experiences a rest in his soul. Knowing God is also the satisfaction of our souls. John 17:3 KJV “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” God is not silent, He has spoken, neither is He hidden, for He has revealed Himself. The Lord shows us, how a man may find Him. Jeremiah 29:13 KJV And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

The first point of God revealing Himself to us is in His word. John 1:1 KJV “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” If you wish to know God, read the word, with an opened mind. Read His word with a longing to hear Him speak to you. Put away the arguments and the fault finding. Pride and arrogance is the great robber of the so called worldly wise from knowing God. Remember that God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Secondly God has revealed Himself in His creation. Romans 1:20 KJV “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” Dear one, you are without excuse to claim you don’t see God in His own creation. Just consider a molecule of water. We have two hydrogen atoms attaching to one oxygen atom. This could only be fused together at a very high energy level. It couldn’t have taken place by chance. Just consider the volume of water in our world. The volume of water in our world has not increased over the years neither has it reduced (From Quora App). This is the handiwork of an intelligent being. Our God is that intelligent being. There is so much in creation that reveals God to us.

The highest of all revelations of God to men is our Lord Jesus Christ. The many fulfilled prophecies that were given thousands of years before His birth. His virgin birth, miracle life, His teaching, His death and resurrection. The witness of His disciples, and their readiness to die for what they testified about Jesus which they claimed was true. In our days He continually confirm His words with signs and wonders, and changed lives.

DO NOT LET CHRIST HUMANITY MAKE YOU MISS HIS GLORIOUS DIVINITY

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 7:27 KJV “Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.”

Jesus was fully God and fully man. In His days in the flesh, He revealed Himself as the Son of man, who depended absolutely on the Holy Spirit.  Many in His days knew Him after the flesh and could not enjoy His glory as the Son of God. They could even identify Him by His parents. John 6:42 KJV “And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?” Why did He have to come as a man? There are some very important reasons that made Jesus to come as a man. His state  as a man makes many miss His divinity. We have to appreciate both natures of our Lord Jesus to benefit fully from who He is. Do not allow his humanity to cause you not to acknowledge His divinity.

The following are some of reasons why the Lord came as a man?

1. He became a man, so He could become the lamb of God to

take away, the sin of the whole world. John 1:29

2. He became a man, so He could satisfactorily meet the divine requirements for the redemption of mankind.1Pe 1:18 KJV” Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;”

3. He became a man, so His defeat of Satan and his cohorts could be man’s victory making us qualified to claim that victory as ours. Heb 2:14 KJV ” “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;”

4. He became a man and put down his reputation as God, so He could demonstrate to men how a man could live victoriously by depending on the Holy Spirit. He was an example for us. (Heb 12:2.)

5. He became a man so He could destroy the power of sin over man through His crucifixion. Rom 8:3 KJV” For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:”

In the Lord’s capacity as a man, He made certain statements that reveals His lack of ability to do certain things. All these revealed He had totally put aside His glory as God (Philip 2:5-6). John 17:5 reads “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was”. The Lord made this request, when he came to the end of His ministry on this earth. For the Father to glorify Him with Himself meant He was one in glory with the father.  He clarified this point, by saying, with the same glory I had with you before the world was. “We must not let His humanity cause any one to treat Him with less reverence, like the Jewish people did. They knew His parents and His childhood days and so were failing to see the bigger picture.

MAINTAIN YOUR TRUST IN GOD

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 7:25 KJV “Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?”

Word had gone round among all the Jews that; the elders and chief priest were seeking for Jesus to kill Him. When the Lord was seen talking freely among the Jews, some of them commented in John 7:25 that, “……, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill? Why could they not lay their hands on Him at that time? In John 11:9, the Lord made a proverbial statement that explained everything. ” Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walks in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.” The day symbolises light, and light means the will of God. He implied that if a man walks according to the will of God, only the counsel of God, shall prevail for him.

You do not stumble during the day. Walking in the will of God, means only what God has planned for you shall stand.

From the above exposition the child of God must totally put his trust in the Lord. The devil may say, and show all the threats, yet we must not attend to any of what he may be saying, but to trust in the Lord, and do what He instructs us to do. Life seems to be full of uncertainties. You are up today, but down tomorrow. This should not be the case.  Up and down comes because of lack of consistency of trust in God.

Rom 10:11 KJV” For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed”. The following verse says, ” for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call on Him”. This word ‘call’ also means to put your trust in Him. God is forever true. The challenge of many is when they begin to lose their trust in God at the instance of tough oppositions.

The truth is whether tough winds, or no opposing winds, God’s power to protect is still the same.

Just maintain your confidence in Him.

Peter and the Lord were walking on the sea at the same time. Same conditions for both of them, yet Peter began to sink, why? He lost his trust and so lost that divine security promised to all. Matt 14:27-30

The scriptures instruct us to take up our faith by which we will quench all the fiery darts of the wicked Eph6:16. Your faith is a spiritual weapon to quench every attack of the enemy.

No attack is greater than your faith. So long as you lift it up the opposition must be stopped.

Stop worrying about hard times coming on you, and focus on your relationship with the Lord.

Feed your faith consistently as you practice the word to strengthen your ability to depend on the word in difficult times. As you do this, you would soon realise, whether good or bad times, God is the same, and everything is under your control.

JUDGE NOT ACCORDING TO APPEARANCE

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 7:24 KJV “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”

When the Lord asked Prophet Samuel to anoint a king for Israel, from the sons of Jesse, he went looking at the appearances. He saw the physical structure of Eliab the first son of Jesse, and quickly judged, …surely the Lord’s anointed is before me. The Lord said the following to him, (1 Sam 16:6)1Sa 16:7 KJV But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”

Judging, events or people’s actions just by how things appear, may be very misleading. As children of God, we must be led by the spirit of God always. Things are not always as how they appear. A murder scene with a knife in a man’s hand, standing beside the dead person, does not mean he killed the person.

What are some of the issues of life that we have to be careful    not to judge by appearance?

1.The actions of people

2. Some of the News reports

3. Negative reports about certain people.

4. Biblical teachings that does not have clear sense of scriptural support (Don’t conclude it is truth)

5. Negative reports about your spouse,

family members and close relations.

6. Extremely enticing business deals

7. Negative remarks or slanderous stories about your pastor

8. Unfounded accusations about political leaders.

We must not judge or conclude on matters we do not have enough information about. The Lord said do not judge by appearance. Certain individuals have fallen in the grips of fraudsters, because they came looking like godly men. They were wolf in sheep’s clothing. Certain marriages have broken up because one party was quick in judging the other about an issue, he or she had a very scanty information about. Certain people have gone to jail for offences they knew nothing about. Somebody wrongly accused them. What would God do to those who wrongly put their neighbours in such traumatic conditions?

What must we do, in order to avoid hasty unrighteous judgements?

1. Talk to God about every situation, and ask the counsel of the Holy Spirit

2. Don’t conclude on a matter you are not sure about.

3. Refuse to be controlled by your emotions to take a decision.

(Do not make a decision when you are angry)

4. Do not comment on issues you would not be able to defend yourself

5. Before you make negative remarks about others, ask

yourself, would I be happy, if these words were said about me?

6. Do not speak lies about others or wrongly praise a person, just because he has influence (wealthy). Remember God is greater and can turn the tables in a short moment.
