WHAT IS IN A NAME?

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 1:42 KJV” And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.”

Our topic for today is a question. It asks, what’s in a name? Do names have impact on people? A child was named after me. This boy has never stayed with me or known much about me. The child  would pray for the mother or anyone who is not feeling well. When he started writing at school, he would write the number eight by joining two zeros just as I do. His class teacher tried as hard as he could to let this boy change the way he wrote his number eight but to no avail. Although he has not lived with me before he has picked a lot of traits from me. How does this happen ?It is in the power of names. In the Old Testament the word name, can mean reputation, appellation or character. A name can determine the character of an individual.

When the Lord saw Simon, Andrew’s brother, he said to him you are Simon, which means to hear or listen, but you would be called Cephas, which is interpreted as a stone. The name Peter is Petros in Greek, and it means a stone. Cephas is the same as Peter. Why did the Lord change his name? There is no scriptural reason given for that, yet we could deduce that, by virtue of the role he was to play as the head of his disciples, He needed to be as tough as a stone. Please note that the Hebrew meaning of names also means character.

In Genesis 32:25-28, Jacob met an angel who wrestled with him throughout the night. Jacob asked the angel to bless him, but he asked of his name. Hearing his name, he said you shall no more be called Jacob but Israel. Jacob means a supplanter or, a heel holder’. That name could not be blessed. He had to give him a new name, Israel for as a Prince he had prevailed with God and men.

Please note, when the angel gave that name to him, he did not pronounce any word of blessing.

The name carried the blessing.

What is your name? What is the meaning of your name? Does the meaning of your name reveal itself in your life experience as an individual? IF your name has a very negative meaning that tells in your life experience, then please change it.

From Jacob’s experience a name could carry a curse or a blessing.

In Africa we name our children after certain individuals. Please be very sure that, that person has a type of character that you would like to reflect in your son or daughter if it so happens. Please this is not superstition

THOUGHT:  THE SECRET OF THE POWER OF NAMES IS THAT, THE TONGUE OF PEOPLE THAT CALLS THE NAME, HAS POWER TO CREATE WHAT IT SAYS

THE SPIRIT OF ANDREW

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 1:41 KJV” He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.”

When I was growing up as a young Christian, we had a special class in our local fellowship called the school of Andrew. It was a class meant for learning about personal evangelism. The attitude of Andrew must be cultivated by every child of God. Andrew was not a selfish brother. The moment he encountered the Messiah, he quickly told his brother Simon about Him. He actually invited him to come and see him. How many of us have shared our faith with our own siblings? How many of us are seeking the salvation of our family members? There are even some of us who make it difficult for our siblings to follow us to church. Our lifestyles are so repulsive that no one, gets attracted to what we may be doing. Rom 2:24 KJV “For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.” This should never be your experience. You should rather, let your light shine so much, that men may see your good works and glorify your father who is in heaven.

Dear one, it is our responsibility to get our families to the saviour, if they have not come to him. God always wishes to see families saved. In Acts 16:32, the jailer realising the gates of the prison had been opened by the earthquake, wanted to kill himself, because he thought, Paul and Silas, including the rest of the prisoners, had escaped. When he found out they were there, he asked what must I do to be saved. Apostle Paul said to him, believe on the Lord Jesus, and you would be saved and your house. God always thinks about getting families saved. The moment you are saved, the next people you must consider being saved is your family. When your family is saved, you have an easier work in serving the Lord, and also helping others to know Jesus.

The man, Andrew introduced the Lord to, became the great apostle Peter, who did so much for the body of Christ, then. How would Peter have come to know Jesus, if it had not been for the selflessness of Andrew? You have no idea what the Lord would use that your brother or sister to do for Him.

I was saved at an early age, so I worked hard to get my siblings to Christ as well. It was not easy, yet with prayer and yielding to the Holy Spirit they also accepted the Lord. My Father was an idol worshipper. We kept praying and talking to him, till he also repented and accepted Jesus before passing on. God always seeks the salvation of families, so work hard with prayer to get your family saved.

PROMPT OBEDIENCE

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 1:37 KJV “And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.”

When John said Jesus is the lamb of God, two of his followers, realising this is the truth, quickly left him to follow Jesus. They did not waste any time, they obeyed promptly. God always expects his children to be very swift in their obedience. To delay may bring unnecessary difficulties.

In the book of Jonah, the Spirit of the Lord spoke to him to go to a town called Nineveh, to warn them about an impending judgement of God because of their sinful ways. Jonah 1:2 KJV “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. “Jonah decided not to be obedient to the voice of God. He found a ship which was going to another city. Things turned out so bad that, he was thrown into the ocean and a whale swallowed him, only to be damped at the coast of Nineveh. He eventually went to deliver the message. What was the essence of going through all that trouble? There are many children of who are facing all kinds of rough and difficult times because they would not obey the Lord’s instructions.

Some people ended up doing what God asked them, but with certain physical deformities. Is it the Lord who punished them this way? When a man acts against the will of God, he vacates God’s perfect will, where God controls every event for his good, and rather enters God’s permissive will, where God allows any foreign power to act, yet out of love may turn the situation to get you to do what he might have asked you to do. I said, he may, yet in some cases if you stay stubborn, you would end up being destroyed in your disobedience. This was the experience of King Saul.

Always act like these two disciples of John. You may also consider Abraham. When the Lord asked him to leave his people, nation and go to a land he knew nothing about, he quickly obeyed. Abraham’s obedience has resulted in present day blessing of the nation Israel. God is perfect and every instruction is made in love, for your ultimate good. Be prompt in your, obedience to His instructions.

NO COMPETITION

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 1:37 KJV “And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus”.

When John declared that Jesus was the lamb of God, his two disciples left him to follow Jesus. John did not complain about it. John came to prepare the hearts of men to receive and follow Jesus. He had a following since He became their inspirer. His ministry got to its end at the commencement of Jesus ministry. It is the nature of certain individuals to keep holding on to what they know they must give away. John was focused on what God had asked him to do.

The cause of  competition  mainly come from the ego of people.

Well, there is always a healthy competition that improves on performance and gives those at the receiving end something good to have.

As Christians we have one goal, and that is to glorify Jesus. Ephesians 4:3-7 says it all. We have one spirit, one Lord and one father. We seek to win the lost for the master. There should not be any bad blood generating among pastors because one has a large church and the other has only a small one. Any pastor who feels bad because he has a small congregation compared to another ministry which has a larger number is a baby and an immature Christian. He has allowed his wrong desires to control him. There are even some who would go about saying all kinds of bad remarks about their fellow pastors. Dear man of God, we have one enemy, the devil. We can effectively deal with him, if we are united. Rejoice over the success of your brother and do your best to fulfill God’s mandate on your life.

Please what is success in ministry? Success in ministry is primarily doing what God asked you to do ,to the best of your ability.

The Bible said, the disciples went and preached and God added to the church daily such as should be saved. We do the work of going out to preach or speak to people, God adds to the church. (Acts 2:46, 47).  Our part is to work, God’s part is to bring the increase.

There are many who have not given their best and so their results are not satisfying. If that is your state, you have the opportunity to give in your best. What you must avoid is to seek for your personal glory. One day we will all stand before the judgement seat of our master. We would be rewarded for whatever we did in this body. Your motives will be laid bare. May your motive be as the following :Act 24:16 KJV” And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.”

JESUS, THE BAPTIZER WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 1:33 KJV “And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.”

John explained that he baptizes with water, but Jesus is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. The bible translators used the preposition ‘with’ which relates more with the means by which the act is done. Baptism, as we know is transliterated from Greek. That means, the word was taken from the Greek, and brought into English, without much changes. The word is baptizo which means to be immersed in, dipped in or buried in something. The Greek word which was translated as ‘with’ is the word ‘en’, which is a preposition denoting a fixed position in a place. The word ‘with’ used should not create any wrong picture in our minds.

With the above understanding, just as one is immersed or baptised into water, to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, means one is dipped, body, soul and spirit, into the Holy Ghost. It is an experience where one is fully overwhelmed with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the power house of the Godhead. To be baptized in the Holy Spirit is to be filled with power or dynamic ability of God. Acts 1:8 says, “and you shall receive power after the Holy Spirit is come upon you…”. This is a power to be a witness for Jesus. The word witness is translated from the Greek word ‘Martus ‘ out of which we have the word martyr. A martyr is one who proves his faith, even unto death. The witness testifies about the reality of Jesus and by his faith is ready to prove it in signs and wonder. Mark 16:20 KJV “And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” Amen.

A number of Christians associate the baptism in the Holy Spirit only to speaking in tongues. Well, it is a truth of scripture that when one is baptised in the Holy Spirit, he would speak in tongues (Acts 2: 4, Acts 8:17,18, Acts 10 :44-46, Acts 19″6). These passages allude to the fact that, all those who were baptised in the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues, yet according to Acts 1:8, the real essence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit, is to be enveloped in power for service. This power will heal your body, if you are sick (Rom8:11) You will be able to bring healing to others who are also suffering. The means of stirring this power, is to pray a lot in tongues (1 Corinth 14:4. If you have not been baptised in the Holy Spirit, you can be baptised now. The Lord stands by you to bless you with this great gift. You may pray this way, “Jesus you are the Lord of my life, you are the baptizer in the Holy Spirit. My heart is ready, and my mind is also ready, Lord baptize me in the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Amen. Receive now the baptism into the Holy Spirit. Open your mouth and start praying right now as you thank the Lord for His amazing gift.

LED BY THE SPIRIT

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 1:31 KJV And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

John the Baptist revealed in the above scripture that he did not know Jesus personally. Where did he get all the information about Jesus from? He answers this question in verses 33. In verse 33 he confessed again, I knew Him not, but He that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me….:” This verse revealed the secret of his success. He was in step with the Holy Spirit all the way. Luke 1:15, added that “he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb “

It was the Holy Spirit who led him into the wilderness to prepare him for the task. It was the Holy Spirit who constantly showed him what to do. He instructed Him about who Jesus is and how His baptism would be. The Holy Spirit anointed Him so powerfully and without any miraculous signs and wonders, people still thronged him from every part of Israel, to be baptised by him.

The whole Christian life is all about a partnership with the Holy Spirit. It is called a fellowship with the Holy Spirit. (2 Corinth 13:14). The Holy Spirit is the Lord Jesus unlimited.

What the Lord would have done if He were here, the Holy Spirit would do through you and a whole lot of people at the same time. John 14:16.

He is called the comforter, the one called along one’s side. He comes as a helper, a strengthener, an adviser, an intercessor and an advocate. He is not just one called to help us in the journey, He is God, and the one in charge. Acts 13:2 KJV” As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.” In the preceding verse, the Holy Spirit said ‘separate for me ‘. He added, I have called them. As much as He is our helper, He is our Lord and the one in charge. This is the reason we must act or do EVERYTHING after His instruction.

Success as a Christian is doing what he asked you to do.

Our number one duty is to know Him and to allow Him to lead us. Every believer has been born again by the Spirit and the word. (John 3:5,1 Peter 1:23) He is our Father. He lives in us. He is also with us. He also comes upon us to do special duties. When we pray, He prays through us? When we read the bible, He speaks to us. He also speaks to us in various ways. As the Christian obeys the word and prays, his spiritual senses get developed to hear Him. At this stage you do what He tells you. The more you allow Him to lead, the more you make success of your actions. This was the experience of John the Baptist. This must be your experience as well.

JESUS, GOD’S LAMB

KEY SCRIPTURE; John 1:29 KJV” The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

When John saw Jesus he prophesied about Him, saying, behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Please note that any child of God who has the Spirit of God, has the ability to prophesy. Throughout recorded scripture, lambs have always been used as sacrifices unto God for a number of reasons. The Lord Jesus was to be the Lamb of God who would be sacrificed on behalf of men for the remission of their sins (Heb 9:22). According to the word of God, sin entered the world through   Adam’s sin and death passed on to every person. (Rom 5:12). For man to be made alive unto God, Jesus had to die in our place, so that when a man receives Jesus as Lord, he is made alive from death (Eph 2:1)

The scripture said Jesus is the lamb of God who took away the sin of the world. Sin is a reproach to any person or a group of people. Sin makes rebels out of sons. Sin keeps men far from God their father (Isaiah 59:1&2) Sin shuts God’s ears from hearing the prayers of His children. For the Lord to take away our sins, He had to become sin.2Co 5:21 KJV “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” He became like a serpent in our place John 3:14. The death of Jesus is a symbol of defeat to Satan. This is the reason the blood makes us victors over Satan. Rev 12:11.

Observing the communion is an announcement of the defeat of Satan. It results in various releases of the children of God from all forms of bondages. Always approach the communion with joy, appreciation the Lord, and an expectation of victory from every defeat.

Every child of God must live in gratitude about what Jesus has done for up. We must resolve not to give any place to sin. Sin although separated and rendered ineffective in the child of God, would assume mastery over anyone who subjects himself to it. Rom 6:16 KJV” Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”.

Please note: the strength of sin is the law, why? (1 Corinth 15:55) Living by the law is living outside the influence of the Spirit and rather dwelling on the flesh to win.

Do not give any place to the flesh, live constantly in the Spirit.

PRAYER

Thank you heavenly father, for delivering me from sin and placing me in the Spirit. I live in the spirit and give no occasion to the flesh to have any dominance over me. My life is upward and forward.

WHO ARE YOU?

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 1:23 KJV “He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.”

If you were to be asked, who are you? What would have been your answer? When John the Baptist was asked, who are you? He did not say, I’m John the Baptist. He described himself by what God said about Him. Isaiah 40:3 KJV” The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” John was saying my significance in this life is to do the will of Him that sent me. The Lord said in Heb 10:7 KJV Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God”. It is no wonder, the Lord said, my meat or food is to do the will of Him that sent me. John 4:34.

Now, may I ask you, who are you? Are you a man who is seeking to build a business establishment for himself or for the name of Christ? Would you call yourself, as the man who married with two, four or eight children? John called Himself by what God has said about him. What has God said about you?

John did not just call himself by that scriptural statement but he had committed Himself to live according to that word. John was a huge success. His ministry served countless number of people

Now let’s consider what the Lord said about John the Baptist. Matthew 11:11 KJV “Verily I say unto you, among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he”. Why did the Lord make such a statement about John, since John did not work any miracles of healing, divide any red sea?

John, right from childhood committed himself to seeking the face of God. His main task was to prepare the hearts of the people for the coming Lord. This was his sole live engagement and he fully executed it. Now the task of preparing the way for Jesus was a very important task. John the Baptist was so much given to it such that He identified his personality with that mission.

What are you given to? What are you living for? May you respond to the great commission given to the church. Go ye into all the world, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Matt 28:19. This is our commission and be given over to it.

STAND UP FOR THE TRUTH

KEY SCRIPTURE: John 1:20 KJV And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

John the Baptist came at a time, that bible history speaks of about four hundred years of a famine of the word of God. It was the end of the period between Malachi and Matthew There was no prophetic voice prior to his appearing on the scene. When the fame of John went around the cities of Israel, they wondered whether he was the Messiah. They sent messengers to enquire from Him, whether he was the messiah. John answered that he was not the messiah. The word said he did not tell a lie. Many people are not able to look into the faces of men and tell them the truth either about themselves or about those people. Telling a lie is always a way of setting yourself back. The truth would surely surface after a time. This present-day telecommunication network has turned many into liars. He travels about four hundred kilometres away, yet claims he is just one kilometre away.

Why would people tell lies?

1.People tell lies because of fear

2. People tell lies because they seek to win people’s admiration

3. People tell lies because Jesus is not yet Lord of their lives

4. Men tell lies because, they reason that would bring them the best advantage.

The scriptures teach that Pro 11:1 KJV “A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.”

The Lord says a false balance or any act to deceive is an abomination unto to the Lord. Telling lies brings men under Satan’s bondage and could one day destroy you ultimately. Judas had been living in deception, stealing from the treasury he carried. This act gave Satan an advantage to betray Jesus. John 13:27 KJV” And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.” Dear one you can’t keep people being deceived forever; the truth is like a Cork which cannot stay under water. You would strive to keep it buried under water, yet it would surely surface, and whatever you have been seeking men to think of you would suddenly crumble.

What must you do?

1. If you have been living in deception, ask the Lord for forgiveness.

2.Ask the Lord to deliver you from every bondage of Satan

3. Acknowledge you are light and have nothing doing with darkness

4. Stop the high regard for yourself and make Jesus truly Lord of your life.

5. Decide you would always say the truth no matter the consequences.
