KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 23:16 ” And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless, he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.”

Like begets like. After David, were raised some great men. Among these were three whom the bible described as mighty. These men were:

1. Adino the Eznite

2. Eleazar the Ahohite

3. Shammah the Hararite.

One man who is conspicuously missing among the three is Joab. All through the story of David, Joab’s name ran through it all. Why is he not among these men? Joab on many occasions showed he had an independent spirit. He killed Abner against king David wish. He also killed Amasa also against the king’s wish. He could not catch the grace on the life of David. These other men whose names has rather not been showing up flowed in the grace upon David. Many people relate and serve under certain great men of God, yet they are not able to operate by the grace of God that rest on such men. It is all because of an independent spirit rather than love and submission. Elisha received the “mantle” of Elijah because of his love and submission to him. He actually succeeded him (2nd Kings 2:12).

The scriptures talk about the feats of these mighty men this way. The first is Adino (meaning ‘his ornament’) the Eznite. He lifted up his spear against eight hundred men, whom he slew at one time. The next was Eleazer whose name means “God has helped”. This man arose and smote the Philistines when the Israelites had all left him. His hand clave to his sword. The Israelites returned to find only dead Philistines. The third of these three was Shammah, which means ‘astonishment’. He also stood when the Israelites had run away and fought, conquering all the Philistines. What does these events teach us? If we would stand with and for the Lord, we would always overcome the enemy no matter the size, strength or who the enemy may be. It is the Lord that wins. He only needs a man to stand for him. Multitudes are good but it is a faithful heart standing in faith that would win. Note: The strength of the enemy is nothing in relating it to the Lord. When Christians measure themselves with the limitations of their abilities as men then, will they fail.

Romans 8:31 ” What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?”

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 23:3 ” The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God”.

King David gave a word that the Spirit of the Lord gave to him in our key scripture. He said the Lord told him that, “…. he that rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of the Lord”.

This is a very important advice to all mankind. David was successful because he obeyed this rule. Every man ought to be just in dealing with his neighbour. The word ‘just’ also means ‘righteous’. Each person must do that which is right towards all men. Rulers must know that this earth and all that happens around have laws that govern it. The creator is the ultimate judge over all the actions of men. It is rather unfortunate to find out that Africans are the poorest. Ironically most of the African leaders are exceedingly rich. Let every African leader know that, the Lord says every ruler over men must be just. 

Injustice and corruption are the cause of the predicaments of Africa. The problem does not emanate only from the political leaders, technocrats, entrepreneurs, artisans’ religious leaders, pastors, all citizenry must likewise heed to this command. It is injustice for a pastor to extort money from the congregation. All those who sell so call anointed objects to collect money from the congregation   is gross injustice. All the merchandise of the anointing must stop, it is injustice. Everyone, married couples, business individuals, and what have you must be just in dealing with one another.

King David added that all must rule in the fear of God. God rules in the affairs of men. No one must act, speak or relate with his neighbour without acknowledging that God’s laws must dictate our actions. Fearing God means honouring the laws of God.    Anyone who fails to honour his laws only suffer ultimately. If you honour His laws, the bible said “And He shall be as light of the morning, when the sun rises even at morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain”. (2nd Samuel 23:5).

PRAYER

Father, I pray for all leaders, political, religious etc. must rule in fairness, that your blessing would abide on all.

Romans 2:10 ” But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile”:

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 23:1 ” Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said,”

The scriptures gave a very wonderful description of David. He first said he is the son of Jesse. This description is normal for everyone born of humans. He added further “the man who was raised up on high”.  This simply means he submitted himself to the word of God to control and dictate his life and so God likewise lifted him high among men. Most people are controlled by their natural reasoning and desires. He was not controlled that way.

In the context of the Christian David was spiritually minded. He was a man of the spirit. The Lord Jesus described those who will give acceptable worship (total service) unto God, would do so in the spirit(John 4:23). David was in some moment described as an angel of the Lord. “…. for as an angel of God, so is my Lord the king to discern good and bad: therefore, the Lord thy God will be with thee” 2nd Samuel 14:17. This statement was made by the woman who came to plead for Absalom. Achish the Philistine king also referred to David as an angel. Beloved, if David lived under the old covenant which the bible described as of the letter ministration of death and was passing away, had such a glorious life. How should those of us living under the new covenant which the bible describes as “of the spirit, or ministration of the Spirit (life) be more glorious. We do not have an excuse if we fail to manifest a super glorious life. The secret of David was a total commitment to God and to please him in all he did. In our case God is our father, we proceed from him. We are one with the Spirit of Christ.  We should be properly described as born from above (John 3:3). Don’t let sin have dominion over you and give no place to Satan and his works of sicknesses and demonic manipulations to be seen in you. You are a son of God one born not of blood, or man or the will of the flesh but born of God. (John 1:12,13).

David was also described as the anointed of the God of Jacob. To be anointed means he was appointed by God to play certain roles. The anointing sets one apart or consecrates and empowers according to Exodus 29:21. Every Christian is also an anointed one. We have been anointed with the very Spirit of Christ. (Colossians 1:26-27). We have been listed into a life of excellence, success and fulfillment. Refuse to be ordinary from today. Say to yourself if David under an imperfect covenant was so glorious then I must be more glorious because I am under a perfect covenant.

  CONFESSION

I am born from above. God is my Father, I am born into a life of glory and possibilities. I manifest the nature of my father. My life is an expression of His will and power.

John 3:8 ” The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.”

Ephesians 2:10 ” For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 22:29-30” For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness. For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall.”

One of the hallmarks of David was that he praised God a lot in songs. In this chapter he praised the Lord throughout. Praise is always a very powerful tool to stop the enemy.

Praise is a declaration of one’s faith in God. Songs of various forms carry various messages. It is not every “godly” song that either praises God. Some are prayers, making request unto God. Some songs are even not scriptural at all. Such unscriptural songs build a sense of defeat into your inner being. Make sure the songs you sing lift your faith up.

In the song David sang in 2nd Samuel 22, it talked about, the great victory God has won for him. These are testimonial songs. They also express his appreciation and thanks for all that God has done. He also expresses what the Lord is to him. These are declarations of faith in God. “And he said, the Lord is my rock and my fortress, and my deliverer, the God of my rock, in Him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation my high tower and my refuge, my saviour thou savest me from violence. (2nd Samuel 22:2,3). When one praises God this way, he is making war with the song he or she may be singing. Romans 10:10 says “for with the heart man believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation”. Whenever you sing this way you are fulfilling the above scripture. When you believe what you are singing you bring into reality what you are saying in the song according to Romans 10:10. David was greatly anointed because he praised God a lot. He had such a glorious and fulfilled life because he worshipped the Lord a lot.

Reading through this chapter reveals how he blends praise, worship, thanksgiving and testimonies of the many deliverances God has wrought for him. These things built up his faith and made him to trust the Lord more in the days of trouble. We would do ourselves great deal of good if we would make it our habit to daily read some of the psalms aloud. You do it by personalising the statement and believing everything you are saying. As you do this always the nature and awareness of God would be very real to you.

You would spontaneous express your trust and reliance on God in times of difficulty.

CONFESSION

The Lord is my light and my strength. He is ever present with me and delivers me from all trouble. I will forever rejoice and be glad in Him.

Ephesians 5:19 ” Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;”

2 Samuel 22:22 ” For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God”.

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 21:14 ” And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land”.

King David after delivering seven sons of Saul to be hanged by the Gibeonites, went for the bones of Saul and Jonathan to be reburied. The bible added that “And after that, God was entreated for the land”.  This means the famine stopped.

David had covenanted with Jonathan to be kind to him whether in life or death. It was wrong for the people of Jabeshgilead to bury Saul and Jonathan. David had to fulfill his part of the covenant with Jonathan by going for their bones and reburying them at the country of Benjamin. It was only after this that God was entreated of them.

In our previous study I said covenants, agreements or vows should not be treated lightly. Some people give their word of promise, yet deep down in their hearts they don’t in anyway intend to honour their promise or vows. Numbers 30:2 “If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth”. Deuteronomy 23:21 says it shall be a sin to them if you fail to honour your vow. Once again let’s be reminded that God says whatever you do to your neighbour you do it unto him. Don’t say what you don’t mean. If you do so you are playing the role of the devil. Honour your vows, promises, agreements and covenants. Many people are suffering in all kinds of ways because of this kind of unfaithfulness.

In 2nd Sam 21:15, the Israelites fought with the Philistines. In that battle David was nearly slain, it took Abishai to save him. The Israelites decided that he should no more go to war. Why was David nearly slain? As Christians we need to always maintain our spiritual fire. David had not been fighting for some time and so his strength had gone down. Romans 12:11 “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord”; We have to be aglow in the spirit always so nothing would be able to put us down.

   The subsequent verses tell us of repeated wars that the Philistines raised against Israel, although they lost in all of them. Satan will never stop attacking the Christian. You must always be battle ready. Never get into the flesh.

Stay in the Spirit. Keep your spiritual armour on every day and keep standing till we meet the Lord.

  CONFESSION

I am standing strong in the Lord. I feed daily on the word of God; I build my faith strong as I pray in the Holy Ghost. No enemy shall be able to overcome me in Jesus name.

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 21:1 ” Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, it is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites”.

 In 2nd Samuel 21 the scriptures spoke about a famine that hit the land of Israel for 3 years. David enquired of the Lord, why this was happening and the Lord said it was because of Saul’s mistreatment of the Gibeonites who had entered into a covenant with the people of Israel, in the days of Joshua. Joshua 9:14,15 “And the men took of their victuals and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord. And Joshua made peace with them and made a league with them, to let them live and the princes of the congregation swore unto them”. These Gibeonites deceived Joshua and his men that they came from a far country.  Joshua did not enquire from the Lord before making peace with them.

  It is always    good to seek God’s will on every agreement you want to sign with anyone, especially Marriage. Because of this covenant, God also accepted that Israel should forever be at peace with them. When Saul broke that agreement, it took a couple of years to affect Israel, that is in David’s time.

No one should take any covenant, agreement or vow for granted. It may be a business agreement. It may be a vow to do something for somebody. Spirits always witnesses agreement between men. God is the witness to every normal agreement humans settle on. When one party fail to honour his part, although it is between humans, he or she cannot be free from God’s laws. Every agreement or covenant is a moral matter which is always determined   by the laws of God. In this case, you have offended a man by breaking God’s law, so you can’t ask God for forgiveness until you settle the man. God’s laws favours the one suffering. You might have been unfaithful towards a man, but God’s law is what you have broken. He (God) will come against you. Marriage partners who mistreat each other or one partner will come under God’s judgement. Malachi 2:14 “Yet ye say, wherefore? Because the Lord has been a witness between thee and the wife of thy youth against whom thou have dealt treacherously, yet is she not thy companion and the wife of the covenant?”.

In David’s story the Gibeonites requested for seven people from the house of Saul to be hanged or killed. Until the Gibeonites were settled the curse of famine would remain with the house of Israel. (2nd Samuel 21:6). David spared Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, because of the covenant that existed between him and Jonathan. He took sons and grandsons of Saul totaling seven, and gave them to the Gibeonites. In our days many people including Christians play down on covenants, agreements and vows. No breaker of these things goes free. Let’s be very careful.

 PRAYER

We pray for all marriage couples to keep their marriage covenants faithfully. May all persons keep faithful to their terms of agreement?

Malachi 2:14-17 ” Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore, take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore, take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously. Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, where is the God of judgment?”

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 19:9 And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, the king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom.

Please read through 2nd Samuel 19:9-43. After the death of Absalom, the whole of Israel started talking about the need to get the king back. In verse 10 they said “And Absalom, whom we anointed over us is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back? Why did these people quickly anoint Absalom as king when they knew David was the anointed king.? David’s sin had thrown the whole country under the spell of the devil, who moved them to anoint Absalom as king. May we learn to be very careful about the way we lead our lives. One simple act of sin can cause so much trouble to you.

King David needed to win God’s favour to establish him as king again. Just consider what he did. He did not ask his men to come along and go occupy the palace. He sent the message to the elders of Judah to officially send a word to him. 2nd Samuel 19:17 “And king David sent to Zadok and Abiathar the priests saying speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? Seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house”. What prevented king David from just going to his house and taking his place as king…? David had learnt his lesson. He will not use his will and position to act independent of the will of God. He waited for the people to willingly ask him to come to take over the throne. Many of us do a lot of things out of over ambition. This does not mean we must not take advantage of opportunities. David had gone into that condition because he erred against God and must seek God’s approval before taking any step. When we faulter before God we must likewise humble ourselves before God so he will lift us up”. The whole idea is to humble ourselves before God. (Please read through James 4:6-8). James 4:6 says “But he gives more grace. Wherefore he says God resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble”.

King David and his convoy met Shimei, the Benjamite who insulted and cast stones at him when David left Jerusalem. Abishai had wanted to go and slay him to avenge what Shemei did. Once again David was furious with Abishai and said no blood must be shed that day. David consistently did not want to fall out of favour with God. The actions of David terminated   God’s judgement. The Lord said   “the sword shall not leave his house”, but through a repentant heart, it stopped. Your humility before God and kind handling of people shall always attract God’s favor to you.

David made sure he never repeated his sin again. David’s sin was not just adultery and murder but PRIDE.

PRAYER

O Lord, open the eyes of the church to understand the dangers of pride and avoid it.

James 4:6-10 ” But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up”.

KEY SCRIPTURE:2 Samuel 19:4 ” But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!”

King David mourned for his son Absalom who had been killed in the battle. This is a very big irony. Absalom was aggressively pursuing David to kill him, and now David mourns for him, throwing the whole camp into sorrow. Absalom was a son but he was a deadly enemy to David. Every one of us have a ‘son’ we love yet he is the worst enemy we have. This ‘son’ is called ‘self’.

The works of this ‘son’ or self-according to Galatians 5:19 expresses himself through the flesh. Just consider some of his works. They include fornication, uncleanness, idolatry sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy, outburst of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions etc. The Bible says those who do such things have no place in the kingdom of God. Self is the cause of fear. Many homes are breaking up because self is king inflicting pain and hurts to either husband, wife or children. People’s inability to exercise faith in God is because of self that they love so much.

It was because of the reign of self in the hearts of humanity that Jesus came to die. His death was the slaying of ‘self’ or ‘Absalom’ from our lives (Rom. 6:6). The self is what Gal 2:20 declares that  ” I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me”.

This self is the big I in Everyman. Thank God in Christ the I or self or ‘Absalom’ has been slain. Don’t love the I, keep him or her crucified. You have to always jubilate that self is crucified.

Please note, the impact of the crucifixion of self in our lives is as a result of our faith in what our Lord Jesus did for us. People go into sin when they fail to acknowledge that this self is dead. Remember David’s victory was the execution of Absalom. Dear child of God self is crucified with Jesus. It is Christ who is alive in you. It is no more the self.  The Christian is no more self continues, but Christ conscious

Joab came to King David and said to him “You have shamed the faces of all your servants who this day have saved you… “(2nd Samuel 19:5&6)

Joab told David the truth but was wrong with the impression he carried when correcting the leader. Joab rightly showed David that he was loving his enemies and hating the people who sacrificed their lives to save him. What was wrong about Joab’s word to David was when he added “…for I swear by the Lord if you do not go out there will not one stay with you this night… “. What he meant was I will lead a revolt against you. This was wrong of him to talk to the king that way. Keep your loyalty to what God has established. Joab would not have succeeded because David was appointed by God not himself. Leaders must always consider the interest of the larger body, not the minority that are also personal to them.

CONFESSION

I do not love the self. It is crucified with Christ and would forever remain crucified. I am a consistent victor because self is no more reigning.

FURTHER STUDIES:

Romans 6:6 ” Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin”.

Galatians 5:24 ” And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts”.

KEY SCRIPTURE:2 Samuel 18:5 ” And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.”

Absalom had taken over Jerusalem and have sought counsel which instructed him to go after his father David to kill him. In our key scripture, David instructed his generals, Joab, Abishai and Ittai not to kill Absalom. Was David right in making this suggestion or instruction.? Absalom was his son yet he had become the very weapon of Satan to destroy David’s life. There are certain habits, actions and situations that work to destroy us. We must make sure that those things do not live. Every sin in your life is a direct weapon of Satan to destroy you, don’t let it live.   Absalom had become like sin in the life of David and must be destroyed if King David was to be at peace Proverbs 14:34 says “Righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach to any people”. A reproach is that which causes shame, or it will put you down. The scripture says it is a reproach to ANY people. Every sin must be destroyed from your life. It will destroy you if you allow it.

David set up his men for the battle with Absalom’s men by dividing them into three groups, and he had wanted to join in the battle, but was stopped by his men. They argued that   he would be the target of attack if he was seen. David listened to his men. Every leader must have a listening ear. It is not everything your people suggest that you have to follow, yet you have to think through whatever they suggest. You take your decision after a sober consideration of what was said.

During the battle Absalom’s men were slaughtered (2nd Samuel 18:7). Absalom realized the odds was against him, so he attempted running away. His hair which was so much got caught up to an oak tree. He hanged on the tree till Joab came and killed him. (2nd Sam 18:14) Absalom had no personal knowledge of God. He was a man pursuing a selfish ambition. He was acting against the will of God and was bound to fail.

Why could Absalom be so rebellious and fearless as to attack his own father seeking to kill him.? This problem was caused by his father David. He did not raise Absalom in the fear of God. With so many wives, concubines and children how could he have had time to attend to his children. Parents, remember the scripture that says “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it”(Proverbs 22:6). Every parent is the first sufferer from a bad son or daughter. Never leave your children to be raised by the society. They are your responsibility. Remember, what you do affects your children so much.

          PRAYER

O father let every parent know that they play a big role in what their children become. May all parents give their best to raise godly children?

Ephesians 6:4 ” And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord”.

Proverbs 22:6 ” Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it”.

KEY SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 16:2 “And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, the asses be for the king’s household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as be faint in the wilderness may drink”.

King David left his palace in Jerusalem to avoid any open confrontation with Absalom. On his way he was met by Ziba who brought food on a couple of asses saddled for king David’s men. This man was Mephibosheth’s servant. Would Ziba had come out to show kindness to David, if David had also not shown some kindness to Mephibosheth? May we always learn to show kindness to one another. God is the rewarder of a kind deed done others. Some people may not return a kind deed done to them, but don’t be worried about those who will not reciprocate a kind deed. Always know that whatever good thing you do for somebody, you do it unto the Lord. Matthew 25:44 “Then shall they also answer Him saying, Lord when saw we thee an hungered, or thirst or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them saying, verily I say unto you, in as much as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

Our heavenly Father is the final receiver of every good or bad deed we render to one another. Be very careful how you treat people. Some have entertained angels unawares.

As David and his men were going to their new destination one Shemei who is also a Benjamite from the house of Saul came up and rained insults on David. He even cast stones at him. Abishai one of David’s men requested from David to go and discipline Shemei. David was furious at him and said “And the king said, what have I to do with you ye Abishai, sons of Zeruiah? So, let him curse because the Lord has said unto him curse David. Who shall then say where fore hast thou done so?

David was ready to accept God’s discipline to the limit. He never wanted to act against God’s way. David also knew that it is God who enthrones and dethrones He was not going to act according to his will any longer. David also said further in verse 12 as follows “it may be that the Lord will look on mine affliction and that the Lord will requite me good for his cursing this day”. May we always learn to let God have his way in our lives.

My will is subjected to the will of God. Pleasing Him in everything I do is all that positive living entails.
