KEY SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 22:15 “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him”.
God knows the nature of all humans too well. He says foolishness is bound in the heart of a child: Foolishness is opposite to wisdom. It means the inability to act rightly. The child is like an empty tank. He has no knowledge of what is good or evil. Neither does he or she have understanding. All these coupled with the fact that all men are born in sin. Psalm 51:5 “Behold, I was sharpen in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceive me”. Every child has foolishness bound up in his heart *
The Lord says the rod of correction shall drive it out of him or her. Parents, never allow your child to have his or her way. Some parents are over protective and over pampering. They are scared to see their children cry. They would give every demand the child makes. This is not healthy for the child. Saying no, you can’t have this, is one of the means of correcting the child. There is also the need to apply the rod to drive out that foolishness from the child when it is needed.
I wish to make some points clear at this moment. Punishing a child is different from disciplining the child. Punishment proceeds from anger to satisfy your lust. It is when you feel satisfied because you have inflicted a level of pain to the child. Punishment deforms the child. It traumatises the child and leaves the child with a sense of anger and revenge. An introvert child will cave in and would become more timid. This have serious psychological consequences.
Discipline proceeds from love. You apply the rod not to satisfy your anger but a clear focus on the reformation and transformation of the child. In discipline the parent tries to bring home to the child the offence committed, its future effect and the proper thing to be done. Therefore alongside discipline is a communication of whatever the parent seeks to get from the child.
Please note, it is a ROD OF CORRECTION, not an INSTRUMENT TO MAIM OR TO DESTROY.
Every child has foolishness in him according to the scriptures. I would therefore be firm with my children to straighten them up, yet I will do this out of love in order to get the best out of them.
Genesis 18:19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
Hebrews 12:5 ” And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him”:
