KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 17:27 (KJV). “Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.”

In this passage the tribute collectors at Capernaum came to Peter and asked whether Jesus his master pays tributes or not. Peter said to them no he does not pay. The Lord asked Peter further, that who does the kings take tribute from. He said the strangers. Note, tribute were special levies that people who were servants or foreigners under the rule of a particular king used to pay. The citizens of that state or land, were not supposed to pay tribute.
Notwithstanding the Lord decided to pay. The Bible said when they got home, he did not allow him to say or do any other thing but to address the issue of payment of tribute. He did that, as a means of keeping peace with the authorities and also to teach Peter the need to submit to the laws of the land.
IT is not surprising that when Peter wrote his epistle, he made the following remarks “Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;”—1 Peter 2:13 (KJV)The lesson Jesus taught went well with him and he likewise reminded the brethren to be submissive to the governing body that ruled over them.
The Lord was teaching him to live at peace with all men. As a citizen He was exempted from paying any tribute, yet in order to be at peace they paid it.
Dear child of God, live at peace with all men. Know what makes the other party comfortable and give it, if only it does not go against the word of God. Churches in residential areas, must be considerate with their neighbours, and control their sound levels. Don’t raise your amplifies too high when others want to sleep. Prayer is an expression of your desires unto God. The stronger you express it the more effective, yet loud sounds are not in any way synonymous to strong desire. Be at peace with all men.
I am a product of love, and so I manifest peace. I maintain a peaceful relationship with all as much as is possible. I am therefore able to reach them with the gospel.
