KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”
In these series we are considering how to assist the new convert to become a disciple. We have learnt that the foundation for strong and faster way to raise a disciple is to help him develop a closer relationship with God’s word. We have looked at a few ways that the new convert can take in the word. They are as follows:
- Daily Quiet time
- Daily Bible reading
- Daily listening to the word of God.
We would consider another concept of receiving the word of God. This time the new convert can be introduced to meditating on the word of God. The apostle Paul exhorted the young pastor Timothy to meditate on the scriptures. In 1 Timothy 4:15 it reads “Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.” This is an amazing scripture. It shows us how to profit or excel in life through the word of God. The same idea is revealed in the old testament when God was showing General Joshua, who had just taken over from Moses. This can be found in Joshua 1:8. In the old testament rendering he explained that meditating and doing what the word says would indeed make us successful and prosperous. Meditation is therefore a very vital act that can help one do what the word says.
The scripture in 1 Tim 4:15 speaks of pondering over the word. It means to reflect over the word in your mind. This may take one to find a quiet atmosphere or place to reflect over the scripture. Tell the convert to set a particular moment to reflect over the scriptures he reads. He can do that by creating mental pictures about what the scriptures say. Demonstrate it with him or her by taking a verse or passage of scripture and reflecting it with him. Instruct him to focus on the word and even use the power of imagination to create a scene of himself in the very event you have been reading about. Through meditating on the word this way, he can put himself within the context of the scripture such that, it becomes part of him. In this way it becomes almost automatic to do what the scripture teaches.
Meditation on the scriptures is a discipline that every successful child of God must employ. Everyone meditates in one way or the other. People normally meditate on the wrong things of life. That is the reason there is so much negative happenings in most people’s life. They meditate on wrong things done to them. Worry is an example of wrong meditation. Start meditating on the right things, that is the word of God. The kind of meditation that 1 Tim 4:15, talks about, is a silent type of meditation. We would consider the other type of meditation in our next study.
PRAYER
