KEY SCRIPTURE:2Ki 2:9 KJV “And it came to pass when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.”
We continue with some of the bible characters who walked under the anointing of the Holy Spirit and were such a blessing to their generation. We would study the case of Elisha.
Our key scripture is about Elijah asking Elisha what he would want him to give him before he left for heaven. Elisha asked for a double portion of his grace. Well, this event is not the real catalyst to his receiving that special grace. The whole thing begun at the very first encounter of Elijah and Elisha.
In 1 Kings 19:19, Elijah found Elisha ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen. In our modern times, it would be said that he was a farmer with six tractors on his farm. That was a very wealthy farmer. On the very day Elijah met him, Elijah cast his clothes on him. The act of casting his clothes on Elisha meant he was assuming a father-and-son relationship. It was fathers who clothed their children. By casting the mantle upon him, meant, be a son to me. Elisha quickly responded by taking his opens, slaying them, and gave to the people to feat, and then left to follow Elijah. By this act, he had totally forsaken his past, including any source of financial dependence to follow a man, who was also not in any business. His heart was totally for God. He had fulfilled the scripture that said, if anyone loved his life in this world, he would lose it, but if anyone lose his life for him, he would gain it. John 12:25
The next thing Elisha did to get the anointing was to seriously follow Elijah. He became his servant who gave him, water to drink. When the Lord asked him to go beyond the Jordan River, where he would send him to heaven, in a bodily form, he got to know it. He decided to follow Him, till he receive the grace up him. This story can be found in 2 Kings 2. They began from Gilgal to Bethel, to Jericho, and then to Jordan. Elijah asked him to wait at every one of these places so he goes alone. Elisha was resolved to follow till he lays hold on the anointing. God’s anointing can be transferred from one man to another, and it still depends on the pursuer to do so with all diligence. He or they must follow with a sincere love for the man of God.
When he caused the Jordan River to divide into two, and when they had passed to the other side, Elijah asked Elisha, what he would want from him. He said he would like to get a double portion of his anointing. Elijah’s answer was that this is a difficult thing, but if he could see him as he goes, then he could get it. He was very diligent and so he focus fully as he left for the heavens. His mantle or garment fell and he took it. From there he started walking into the grace.
The sincere seeker will always go satisfied.
