TEACHING THE CONVERT 2

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 BBE “Go then, and make disciples of all the nations, giving them baptism in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:”

Dear child of God your maturity as a Christian demand that you disciple others. Unfortunately, many Christians have a Christian life of home church and work. There is nothing like extending their frontiers to others, by visiting them in their homes as well. Acts 20:20 says “And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house”. Apostle Paul says he taught them publicly and from house to house. Everyone of us must be committed to the house-to-house ministry as well.

We learnt from our last study that for new babies to grow well and strong they must be free from all diseases.1 Pet 2:1 lists some character diseases as Malice, guile, envy, hypocrises and evil speaking. Teach the new believer that, as a child of God he is a new creature, the old is passed away, everything has become new (2 Corinth 5:17). Teach him to know that he is free from every life of sin and therefore must not permit any of these traits to remain in his life (Rom 6:6,14).

Many new Christians, normally experience a difficult time in growth because these negative tendencies are not well dealt with.

One of the most powerful instruments in our members to control one’s actions is our tongue. When an individual knows how to use his tongue very well, the bible says he will successfully control his whole body. James 3:2.

The tongue is a very small member yet it can direct the affairs of the whole body. Teach him or her to keep telling or saying to himself that he is a new creature in Christ and the old life of malice, deception, envy and the rest are no more in his life. He also says, he is the righteousness of God (2 Corinth 5:21), filled with love, truthfulness, appreciation of what God does through and for others. He says further that ‘I do not speak evil about myself or others in anyway (1 Peter 3:10)’. Any new believer who starts speaking this way, sets himself up to lead a very successful life in Christ. There may be some new Christians with certain unique problems yet, by prayer, love and the word of God they will soon respond positively to God’s word.

From this point, teach the new Christian the various ways of taking in the word of God. Introduce him or her to having his or her quiet time every day. Explain to her or him that the quiet time is a devotional moment of praise, prayer reading through a passage of the scripture and meditating on what was read. He must daily ask himself what have I learnt from this passage? What actions do I have to take concerning what I have learnt? Teach him to write down some of the things he learns. He then should pray about what he has learnt. An average quiet time should take about 30 to 45 minutes. These days there are a number devotionals posted on the social media network. He may stick to one or at most two very good teaching devotionals, for his or her quiet time. He may just read others to inform himself or increase his knowledge in the things of God. You the teacher may, help the convert choose a good devotional material to be used.

 PRAYER

Father, I receive the ability to care for every new convert I win for you. I commit myself by your grace to be a good establisher of souls.

THOUGHT:  A BABY WILL GROW WELL IF WELL TAKEN CARE OFF.

TEACHING THE CONVERT

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV” Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

Our goal for teaching the convert is to make him or her, a disciple. Let’s consider the working definition of a disciple. One becomes a disciple of Jesus Christ, when he becomes stabilised the faith, has an ongoing commitment to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and has developed the basic disciplines of Christian living and service, so that the lifelong maturing process as a Christian is guaranteed, as much as is humanly possible. The convert must first be stabilised in his faith.

Assure the new Christian that the bible is the inspired word of God and it is profitable for doctrine, correction and instruction in righteous (2 Timothy 3:16&17). The bible was not written by Europeans to deceive Africans. It was written in the middle east with overwhelming archaeological evidences. The Bible is God’s authoritative guide for all matters of faith and conduct. Assure him or her that according to the word of God anyone who accepts Jesus as his Lord has eternal life. (1st John 5:11-13) Encourage him to trust what the word says, and not his feelings. He is a child of God because the Bible said, as many that receive or believe in Jesus were given the ability to become sons of God. John 1:12,13

During the growth of children two main things should occur that would make growth possible.

1.To prevent any kind of disease from attacking the child

2 Feeding the baby well.

These two factors are captured in the following verses.

1 Peter 2:1,2 KJV “Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

One grows by Feeding on the word of God. The scripture says the one who must grow by the word should first do away with certain traits. These are as follows

1. Malice (fighting, quarrelling, anger, unforgiveness, etc)

2. Guile (lies, deception etc)

3.Envy (Jealousy, evil cravings, negative passions)

4. Hypocrisies(pretence)

5. Evil speaking

These traits can be described as character diseases that will prevent the word from bearing fruit in the growing child of God. Make the new believer aware of these things and ask the Spirit to help him put them out of his life.

The second action, is to start taking in the word. The bible says desire the sincere milk of the word so that He or she may grow by it. There are a number of ways that you can teach the new convert to receive the word of God. These are

1. Quiet time

2. Bible reading

3. Listening to the word

4. Memorising the scriptures

5. Meditating on the scriptures

6. Bible Studies.

Teach the new believer to employ all these means of taking in the word. If he is to give attention to the word as stated above, he would surely stabilise his faith in the Lord.

THOUGHT: A TIME WITH THE WORD OF GOD IS A TIME SPENT IN FELLOWSHIPPING WITH GOD.

WAYS OF COMMUNICATING THE GOSPEL 2

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

We continue with our discussions on some of the simple ways of presenting the gospel to people we meet

You could use the four spiritual laws, written by Bill Bright of the campus crusade USA. These laws are as follows;

A. Four spiritual laws.

1.God loves you and has a wonderful plan for you. John 3:16, 10:10

2. Man is sinful and therefore separated from God. Rom 3:23,6:23, Isa 59:1&2

3. Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for man’s sin John 14:6, Rom 5:8, Acts4:12

4 We must individually receive Jesus Christ as saviour and Lord. John 1:12 Rev 3:20,

You may pray with him or her to accept the Lord into his or her life.

B. Steps to peace with God (by Billy Graham)

1.God’s plan -peace and life (God loves you and wants you to experience His peace and life. John 3:16)

2. Our problem -Separation (Being at peace with God is not automatic, God gave us a free will to choose, and we chose to disobey Him Gen 2:15-17, 3:6,7. This is what separates man from God. Isaiah 59:1,2

3. God’s remedy, the cross. – Jesus died on the cross and rose again, paying the penalty of our sins. He bridged the gap between us and God.  1st Corinth 15:3,4, John 14:6,

4. Our response – Receive Jesus Christ. We must trust and receive Jesus as our Lord and saviour. John 1:12, Rev 3:20, Rom 10:9,10

When the enquirer makes a decision to make Jesus the Lord of his life, you may lead him or her to make a prayer accepting Jesus as the Lord and saviour of his or her life.

After this act of making Jesus Lord of his or her life, commences the main program of teaching this individual to become a disciple. This is what is called follow up. Many people fail at this aspect and so they lose the new convert. Winning a soul is only of value if that soul remains in Christ and becomes a disciple who can take care of others.

You may take just thirty minutes to help one make a decision for Jesus, yet it would take a reasonable time to help him or her become a disciple. Some may take as short as three months, while others may take two years and over. It depends on the teacher as well as the student, yet most depends on the teacher.

What are the requirements for a good follow up ?

  1. Have a clear understanding for the preciousness of a soul Matt 16:26

2. Love that soul with a sincere love 2 Cor 5:14

3. Pray passionately for his or her establishment in the faith. Gal 4:19

4. Your program of teaching must go in the following way

a) Help him build strong faith IN CHRIST Col 2:6&7

b) Help him develop his commitment to the Lordship of Jesus Christ John 15:4-6

c) Help him to know and practice the various disciplines of the Christian life

These include:

Fellowshipping, Prayer, Bible study, Quiet time, Listening to messages, Evangelism,

Giving, paying of tithe, Fasting.

If he practices these things on his own, then he has become a disciple ready to disciple others

THLOUGHT: IT IS DISCIPLES THAT SUSTAINS THE CHAIN OF MAKING OTHER DISCIPLES, SO MAKE DISCIPLES.

WAYS OF COMMUNICATING THE GOSPEL

KEY SCRIPTURE:1Co 15:1 KJV “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;”

The commission to go ye is basically to tell men about the gospel. The gospel is good news. The gospel is not scriptural songs. It is not just any message from the bible. The message of the gospel is clearly seen in the following verse, 1Corinth 15:3 ,4 KJV” For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

The good news is all about, the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The following is the message of the gospel

1. God created man sinless and perfect Gen 1:26-31

2. Man disobeyed God and sinned against God. Gen 3:6&7

3. Man’s sin brought death and all other effects of sin and death. Rom 5:12

4. God gave Jesus to die for men and to take away the sins of the world. John 1:29, John 3:16, Rom 5:12

5. Jesus is the only way to be saved Jn 14:6, Acts 4:12

6. Men must repent of their sins, believe in Jesus and then confess Him as their Lord. Mark 1:15, Rom 10:9,10

The following are also some ways, that you may share the gospel with your enquirers.

One very powerful means of communicating the gospel is through your personal testimony. A personal testimony is the story of your life concerning the kind of life you used to lead before you were converted, your conversion to Christ, as well as the changes that has resulted after Christ came into your life.

A personal testimony may be presented in the following manner.

1. Give a brief description of what your life was like before you received Christ.

2. Describe how God spoke to your heart and opened your eyes to the truth of the gospel and your response to it

3. Finally share how your life has changed since receiving your new life in Christ.

In Acts 26, Apostle Paul when he had the opportunity to defend his faith before king Agrippa presented his personal life testimony. On hearing Paul’s testimony, King Agrippa commented in Acts 26:28, that Paul, you almost persuaded me to become a Christian. This was as a result of the power of a personal testimony. Dear brother or sister, always use your personal testimony as one of the very powerful ways to communicate the gospel.

Another very simple way to present the gospel is called the Roman road

1. Sin is the basic problem of mankind. Rom 3:23

2. The wages of sin is death. This is a separation between God and man. Rom 6:23, Rom 5:12

3 Christ Jesus has died for the sin of all men Rom 5:8

4 We receive salvation and forgiveness through faith in Jesus Rom 10:9,10, 13

5. Salvation brings us peace with God. Rom 5:1

The above are very simple but scriptural ways to present the gospel to a neighbour. Always trust the Holy Spirit to be the convertor of the person

THOUGHT:  ALWAYS PRESENT THE TRUTH AND TRUST THE HOLY SPIRIT WITH THE REST.

APPROPRIATE APPROACHES TO ANY NEW PERSON IN SHARING THE GOSPEL

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV” Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

One big hurdle that a number of Christians face in approaching an enquirer or a neighbour is the right words to initiate a conversation that would finally lead into sharing the gospel. I would consider a few examples of scripture about how certain persons in the scripture approached others and ended up bringing them to the knowledge of the truth.

Jesus and the woman at the well.

 John 4:7-25

When the woman came to fetch some water, the Lord requested for some water. John 4:7. He then led the conversation from physical water to living water. He ultimately brought the woman to see the fact that she is lost in her sins and must make amends.

Lessons

1. The Lord asked for help. You may not ask for help from a complete stranger, but in the event that He or she offers you help, you can use your response of thanks to develop a conversation which you should turn it to be a Message of the gospel.

2.When you offer a help of some kind, it becomes a possible moment to present the gospel. You may pay the transport fare for a neighbour, after which you could go ahead and share the gospel.

3. You may consider using the following questions to initiate a conversation leading to sharing the gospel with them

>Are you a religious person?

> Do you know how to have a relationship with God?

> Did you grow up in church? What were you taught about God growing up? Do you still believe that?

> May I pray for you? Do you have any special needs I can pray for?

> What do you think the solution to (insert recent troubling news event) is?

> Do you have time for a short story? It’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me and I love to tell people about it! With this you may share your personal testimony with the enquirer.

4.You can use a religious scene to develop a conversation of the gospel. Apostle Paul used an observation of the superstition of the people of Athens to share the word with them. Acts 17:23

For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

You can use a rosary hanging in a taxi or a bible on the dashboard, to start a conversation leading to the gospel.

The above deals mainly with some ways that one could initiate a conversation to preach the gospel

PREPARATION FOR EVANGELISM 1

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

I have realised that a prayerful preparation prevails perpetually. In whatever you may be doing in the name of God, it must be cooked in prayer. Christian historians state that one man who had a greater number of His converts staying in the faith was Charles Finney. (1792- 1875). It is said that about 80 percent of all those converted in his meetings maintained their faith. The great success of this minister was due to the great prayer preparation of Rev Charles Finney and his team of praying men led by one father Nash.

Evangelism is basically a contention with devils for the souls of men. The scripture said, the God of this world blinds the minds of them that believe not.  2nd Cor 4:4. Apostle Paul again mentions about the Prince of the power of the air that works in the children of disobedience. This is referring to one personality that we contend with, when winning souls for Christ. He has an organised hierarchy of devils who do various activities all with a goal to keep the sinner lost in his or her sins.

In the light of the above, the very first requirement for winning the lost is prayer. During the ministry days of our Jesus Christ, He did not play down on His prayer life. Mark 1:35 says the Lord rose up a great while before day, He rose up to go to a solitary place and prayed. There were occasions He had to dispatch His disciples to go and rest, whiles He left to go and pray. (Matt 14:23) All these prayers were to give Him a very great impact on them who heard Him. The Lord even spent all night praying (Luke 6:12) If the master Himself prayed this way, what must we do?

As the master committed his life to a consistent time of prayer, so should we do the same. Praying for souls to be saved, is normally not a prayer of faith

Where, you ask the Lord on the basis of what he has said. and believing that, what you asked has been granted Praying for souls is a travailing and prevailing one. This is the same as what Galatians 4:19 said. “My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you, “The apostle meant from the verse that he had earlier prayed this way to get them saved, and had to do it a second time, so that Christ would be formed in them. This kind of prayer for souls is expressed in great passion and at times with tears unto the Lord. In the prayer for soul we challenge the blinding power of devils to be broken as well as men to be loosed from all forms of invisible prison gates. Matthew 16:18.

The call to save the lost is a very serious business and we need to attach every seriousness to it.

‘GO YE’ part 3

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV” Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

We continue with our discussions on some of the reasons why most Christians are not going out to talk about the saving power of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Some do not ‘go ye’ because they say, they do not know what to say when they go. I think this is very unfortunate in this day and age of abundant information. I think the real problem is a true love for the master and a readiness to do what he’s asked us to do. In this period there is so much information to communicate to the person you meet. It is also not difficult to lay hold on good materials to teach. We receive chunks of information from our churches as well. If you have good teaching in church, you may record them, write it out, and go teach the same things

The real challenge is whether we truly love and fear the Lord.

The next point says, we must go and teach all nations. The meaning is to make disciples or students of the nations. We must subject ourselves to studying the word, to first equip ourselves and then to go forth and teach others. 2Timothy 2:15 KJV “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” The word study has the idea of been diligent to study so well you would be able to rightly teach the word and have a very positive impact on your hearers. Please note, all these teaching may not go on within the confines and comfort of the church, but in the homes, in the schools, market places or anywhere that you can teach these converts the way of Christ.

What each of us need to know and come to, is to be fully convinced that there is a charge, or a task that has been committed to our trust. We normally say, if I don’t do it someone else would do it. This is a lie. If you don’t do it, no one may do it. We can’t afford to fail our master who painfully and shamefully fulfilled His role by dying for us all..

In the gospel of John, we have about 41 times that the Lord Jesus used the term “sent me “He was relating this to the father who had sent Him. He could not be disobedient, but to do what the father had asked him. You must fully convince yourself of the mission given to you. No one else could do it, but you. Go and make disciples of the nations.

GO YE 2

KEY SCRIPTURE: Mat 28:19 KJV “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

Every Christian is commanded to ‘go ye’ into the world and teach the nations. Why are most Christians not going forth as the Lord commanded us? The very first reason why many do not go forth is because they do not realise it is a sin to receive an instruction from the Lord and to be disobedient about it Today repent from this sin and get involved in the call to go and make disciples.

A second reason why most of us are not involved in reaching out to the lost is because it has not become a priority to us. As a result of that many people do not make time for it. We get occupied with so many things but not to reach out. Dear one the most expensive of all commodities in this life is the soul of men. Jesus said what does it profit a man , if he gains the whole world and lose his soul. This statement simply means nothing can be exchanged for the soul of a man. The bible says Satan has blinded the minds of them that believe not and is sweeping them into hell. (2nd Corinth 4:4) The following is the plight of those that Satan has succeeded in deceiving. Isaiah 5:14 KJV” Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.” Dear brother would you sit down and watch precious souls descend into hell? From today, make soul winning the most important task in all your engagements.

The next reason why many Christians are not heeding this command to go out and reach out to the lost is because they are shy or afraid. This issue of shyness means most Christian are not abreast with what is at stake. Our contention for souls is not against the humans we are relating with. It is a war against devils who have held these people captive. They use them to do more shameful things that non of them is shy about. People are ready to boldly identify themselves as homosexuals and lesbians who have no sense of shame. What is the shame in presenting a truth that would liberate them? To say you are shy means you have not known the power of the gospel. Apostle Paul says he is not ashamed of the gospel of our Lord Jesus because it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes Rom 1:16. Please get the picture clear, these humans, who may be our brothers, friends, neighbours or what have you are being attacked and destroyed by these devils, yet we have the ability and the means to free them. That means is by the gospel. Will you continue saying you are shy or afraid? Arise today, shake off every dust of shyness or fear and get to work to save men with the truth of the gospel.

GO YE

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

In the business world, no product is sold without some form of introduction of the product to prospective buyers or users. One of the best means of advertising is when individuals talk to others about the benefits of the products. The Lord Jesus before He finally rose into the skies gave certain instructions to His disciples. Among the many things He told them was the command to go and teach all nations. The word was ‘go ye’. Go ye from where? Go ye from the church. The church has become a place of comfort and rest for many Christians, such that they only move from home to church. Please if this is your lifestyle then you are not honouring the word go ye. It is a command to be obeyed

The word is go ye into all the nations. The word nations is the Greek word ‘ ethnos’ which means a group of persons with similar background. This could be a group of traders, footballers; tailors or it could also mean a nation like Ghana. It is a command to go to all kinds of groups and teach them.

Many Christians have not heeded to this command. No marketing man stays at his business centre expecting his products to get to the consumer. He goes out there and uses all means to convince wholesalers and retailers to buy them. In some cases, they are rejected at the first contact yet they keep coming back till the products are bought. Christians are also giving out the gospel to a lost world. We must be very passionate in giving out the gospel to our world.

Many Christians don’t reach out because they don’t know what to expect. They are always three or four things that may happen to you when you reach out. You must prepare yourself for any of these. They are as follows;

1.You may be rejected and not received outright. These don’t normally happen in places like Ghana.

2.You may find some who would receive you, but are filled with arguments to oppose you.

3. You may also meet those who would receive you and are ready to cooperate with you. These are the predominant group in Ghana.

4 There may also be some who may be violent. These ones are by far in the minority in our part of the world. There are some places that are extremely hostile to the preaching of the gospel yet the message must surely go.

Dear brother or sister Apostle Paul develops his thoughts about the importance of preaching in the following manner.

Rom 10:14 KJV “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”

You must go. My last advice to help you in this call to go into the would is to pair up with other brethren. You can have a team of three of you to always go out to share the word Jesus disciples went as teams of two or three. Paul did the same. Let the gospel go.

THOUGHT: THE GOSPEL IS THE POWER OF GOD TO SAVE OUR WORLD GIVE IT OUT.

EXERCISING THE AUTHORITY OF CHRIST

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:18 ISV Then Jesus approached them and told them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me”.

In our studies we have looked at obtaining the authority of Christ through His name and also our place in Christ, which gives us access to inherit His authority. Many have learnt these things yet are not able to exercise the authority of Christ. What must such people do to actually experience the authority of Christ.? The basic requirement for relating with God is by virtue of a covenant. Covenants between men and God always demands a sacrifice to be made, to be a token for the covenant. This was the reason the Lord asked Abraham to circumcise every male in his family if that person should have anything to do with God. Genesis 17:10 ISV “Here is my covenant that you are to observe, between me and you and your descendants: Every male among you is to be circumcised.”

It is this act of sacrifice that establishes the covenant between God and His people. This covenant makes God bound to respond to you.

We as Christians have a covenant with God through Christ. When Jesus died His death circumcised everyone of us who believes in Him. Colossians 2:11 ISV “In union with him you were also circumcised with a circumcision performed without human hands by stripping off the corrupt nature by the circumcision performed by the Messiah.” The above verse is what has been generally established for all Christians, but a man’s decision to willingly live a sacrificial life for God brings him into a personal covenant with God.

This act of sacrifice establishes his faith in a dimension that does not waver under any condition. Every genuine sacrifice has an element of trust. It therefore prepares the heart to trust in God for impossibilities

Now, what are the kind of sacrifices that can bring one into a covenant relationship with the father. Whenever a child of God is ready to lose any precious thing for God, the Lord also responds to him in a very unconditional way. No financial sacrifice is too big for him or her to make for God. He is ready to spend great moments in prayer, as well as giving in to fasting over certain periods. If such a person will walk in holiness and true humility, he will surely be a candidate to manifest the authority of Christ in a higher dimension than most Christians leading a conservative life.
