BAPTIZE THEM

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

In the old covenant there was various forms of washing or purging that made people fitting to either come before God or made them fitting to stand before God.  Every visitation of God demanded that the people kept themselves clean by washing. Exodus 19:10 KJV “And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes,” The baptism of John was a way of preparing the people to meet God. It was a baptism of repentance (Acts 19:4). It was an acknowledgement of a changed attitude towards God, then they were baptised. This word baptize is transliterated from the Greek word ‘baptizo’, which means to immerse or dip into or bury. The Lord Jesus would not start His ministry until He had passed through the process of being washed by dipping in water. Matt 3:15. The Lord said it fulfills all righteousness.

When one was born again the, Lord instructs or demanded that they be dipped into water. This is not just a washing of the sin away but an identification with Jesus in His death, burial and resurrection. Rom 6:3 KJV “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?”. Please note that the scripture did not say, so many of us who were baptised into ‘water’. He said so many of us who were baptised into Christ. The day and moment you believed in Jesus, the Holy Spirit dips you, immerses or baptises you into Christ, praise the Lord! This is a supernatural work that hides us in Jesus and makes us put on Jesus Gal 3:27 “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ”. To put on Jesus is a mysterious identification with Jesus that would make every devil recognise us like Jesus if we would recognise, we are really one with Jesus.

Now the water baptism is a natural demonstration of what has taken place in the Spirit. 1Pe 3:21 KJV “The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:” Baptism saves, not because you were dipped into water, but a repented heart, that makes the dipping into water effectual. Everyone who believes in Jesus must be baptised in water (Mark 16:16). This kind of baptism is by immersion that depicts the work of salvation by our Lord Jesus. Sprinkling of water is not baptism, it may be a form of washing but it is not baptism.

THOUGHT: BAPTISM PHYSICALLY IDENTIFIES YOU WITH THE BODY OF CHRIST

TEACHING THE NEW CONVERT 8

KEY SCRIPTURE Mat 28:19 KJV “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

In today’s study we would go over our discussion of the inductive bible study, in order to be well established in its function and application.

We would consider another verse of scripture as an example to go through the study. Let’s pick Matt 6:33 for our study. We would observe the facts in this verse, using the fact-finding questions.

It reads ” But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

1. Why did the Lord begin with but?

2. What does the word seek involve?

3. What is the kingdom and its righteousness.?

4. What is the outcome of doing what the verse says.?

11. He used the word ‘but’ because he was about to say something different from what he had been saying earlier.

12.  To seek means to give all your attention to pursue that thing. We used to seek all the carnal pursuit with all passion, now turn that passion after God

 13. The kingdom of God is the rule of God over men. His righteousness is the right ways and standards of God. Everything that has to do with God and His dealings with His children is about the kingdom of God. Serving and pleasing him is also about the kingdom. These are the things we must seek.

14. Any man who places God first in seeking to serve Him in holiness will attract God’s favour that brings all earthly blessings into his life and experience.

Now we apply all that we have interpreted;

A 1 DO not be worried about anything

A 2 Focus your energy on doing that which pleases God.

A 3 In pleasing God make sure you are upright in everything you do

A 4 DO the above and every blessing will be your portion

This is a very simple way of employing the inductive bible study. Use it to study other parts of the scriptures.

TEACHING THE NEW CONVERT  7

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 ISV” Therefore, as you go, disciple people in all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,”

In our last study we looked at studying the bible as one of the ways to help the new convert take in the work. We started with the inductive approach to studying the bible. We chose John 3:16 as a sample scripture to help us learn how to make use of the inductive approach.

We said the inductive study has three main parts, consisting of

1. Observation

2. Interpretation

3. Application.

We have considered the first two. During our last study. From our discussion on John 3:16 we asked what is everlasting life. Is everlasting life just the life of a Christian after death. Look for the meaning of everlasting from the Bible Apps with Greek translations on your phone or any other device. The Greek translation is ‘aionios’ which means ‘without beginning and end’. This happens to be the very life of the Father, as well as the Son.

1Jn 5:11 KJV “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”

What does it mean to share in the life that the father and the Son have? This life called everlasting or eternal is the same life that functioned in Jesus. Jesus life could not be overpowered by disease or sin. It could not be overpowered by a virus or bacteria. If we share the same life with Jesus should viruses and bacteria overpower us? We also have dominance over these viruses and bacteria as the Lord had.

It is your knowledge of the truth and your subsequent believe that makes it your experience.

APPLICATION

After the OBSERVATION and INTERPRETATION of the scriptures, we move to apply what we have observed and interpreted in our lives from the scripture we studied inductively, we can make the following applications

  1. As the Lord Jesus honoured Nicodemus to share all those things with him, so should we be ready to share with people, One on one.
  2.  God loved all men so He gave His only begotten Son. We must demonstrate our love towards others by giving our best.
  3.  You must believe in Jesus, if you have to be saved and not perish
  4. We have received eternal life, the very indestructible life of Jesus and so we must refuse to subject our Life to diseases.
  5.  Thank God for such a glorious salvation

TEACHING THE NEW CONVERT 6

KEY SCRIPTURE: Mat 28:19 KJV “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

We continue with our discussion on teaching the new convert. I am majoring on various ways of making the new convert know how to take in the word of God. God’s word is the means by which He works through us. Without the word no one can relate with Him (God). God and His word are one.

The strength of every child of God is dependant on how much he lives by the word.

Many new converts do not last in the faith because they do not focus on the word in their early life in Christ. Please encourage the new believer to have a desire for the sincere milk of the word, which would definitely make him grow.

We move to another level of taking in the word of God. This is bible study. Please introduce this aspect after the new convert has successfully practised some of the earlier disciplines. Bible Study takes various forms and shades. One may choose to study a verse of scripture, a chapter or a whole book. One can also study certain words in the bible. The new convert may have to start with studying the books in order to have a broad view of the scriptures. He can later move on to some specialities like character study etc.

Dear teacher you must first study and apply this kind of approach to studying the bible, so you can teach it well. In this study I want the new convert to employ the bible study system called the inductive bible study approach. Inductive means a kind of reasoning that proceeds from considering the general facts, and then drawing conclusion out of the facts observed.

An inductive study has three main aspects or areas

1. Observation

2. Interpretation

3. Application

 OBSERVATION

Under observation you use the fact-finding questions to observe the facts within the passage. The fact-finding questions are who, where, why, how, when, what? In every verse of consideration, look out for any general facts within the verse.

For an example let’s consider a verse of scripture John 3:16.

John 3:16 KJV” For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”.

Who are the persons in this verse? Our answer is

1. God,

2. The world, every human then and now.

3. Jesus, who is the only begotten Son

4. those who would believe in Jesus.

Who was speaking in the verse? The Lord Jesus.

What was he saying? He talked about God’s love for the world, that made Him give his only begotten Son. Any one who believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. To find who he was speaking to, you must read from the beginning, and the answer is Nicodemus.

We could ask further, what is everlasting life? This can be answered by looking for other scriptures that talk about everlasting life or eternal life. We could also look for the meaning in a bible dictionary. (Studying God’s word may not be a daily issue but one may have it according to his time schedule, probably once a week)

 INTERPRETATION

After gathering the observed facts, we go to the interpretation of these facts.

1.The Lord was very patient even with one individual to go that length in explaining all these things to him.

2. God is not partial but has made a provision for the salvation of every man. Every body is very important to God.

3. The only way for salvation is to believe in Jesus, not any good works.

4. It is only those who would believe in the Son who would be saved.

TEACHING THE NEW CONVERT 6

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

In our last study we looked at a form of taking in the word of God by meditation. This is one way that a new convert who is disciplined can take in God’s word. May I remind us that anyone who is given to God’s word will definitely grow in grace by the word as well as experience a life of participating in the blessings of God. Apostle Paul exhorted the brethren in Ephesus (Act 20:32) to be committed to God and the word of His grace. This will first build them up, and secondly give them an inheritance among the saints. Dear one you must be committed to God’s word and help the new believer also establish himself in God’s word. You must also introduce the new brother or sister in Christ to this form of meditation, which is not silent like the type we considered in our previous study. In this kind you speak the word to yourself either in a quiet way, or aloud. The idea is to keep repeating those words of scripture over and over again, till they are well established in your Spirit, and doing that word becomes automatic. Once again you have to encourage him to be very disciplined to practice these things.

We see this aspect of meditation in the old testament. The Lord asked Joshua to employ this kind of meditation in Joshua 1:8. He said “this book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it, day and night….” The word translated meditate is the Hebrew word “hagah” and has the following meanings, muse, mutter, roar, speak, utter etc. We realise that in this kind one says the words of scripture repeatedly to himself over and over again. The Lord says it must not leave your mouth.

Teach the convert that this kind of meditation has a great benefit and impact in the life of the one who practices it. Whatever words of scripture he says and believe them in his heart, become established, or they come to pass in his life. This act functions with the principle of faith that creates or makes things happen in the life of those who do it. Just look at 2Corinth 4:13 KJV “We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak: Romans 10:10 also adds that, “with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” We realise from these two verses of scripture that the man who believes in his heart what he is saying with his mouth is creating that very thing or event in his life. Remember that in Rom 4:17 the word also says God calls those things which be not as thou they were. It shows us how our father brings things to pass. He simply believes what he says and they manifest in reality.

Whosoever believes in the scriptures he repeats with his mouth according to all the references above is creating those particular condition or thing in his life. It takes real disciple to do these things, yet anyone who does it will see a real lifting of his life to a very high plain. Disease would leave your body as you speak forth or meditate on scriptures that talk about healing. Your life will be set on paths of righteousness as you believe and say the scriptures that relate to righteousness.

THOUGHT:  ALWAYS BELIEVE THE SCRIPTURES YOU SAY, AND THEY WOULD BE REAL TO YOU.

TEACHING THE NEW CONVERT 5

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

In these series we are considering how to assist the new convert to become a disciple. We have learnt that the foundation for strong and faster way to raise a disciple is to help him develop a closer relationship with God’s word. We have looked at a few ways that the new convert can take in the word. They are as follows:

  • Daily Quiet time
  • Daily Bible reading
  • Daily listening to the word of God.

We would consider another concept of receiving the word of God. This time the new convert can be introduced to meditating on the word of God. The apostle Paul exhorted the young pastor Timothy to meditate on the scriptures. In 1 Timothy 4:15 it reads “Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.” This is an amazing scripture. It shows us how to profit or excel in life through the word of God. The same idea is revealed in the old testament when God was showing General Joshua, who had just taken over from Moses. This can be found in Joshua 1:8. In the old testament rendering he explained that meditating and doing what the word says would indeed make us successful and prosperous. Meditation is therefore a very vital act that can help one do what the word says.

The scripture in 1 Tim 4:15 speaks of pondering over the word. It means to reflect over the word in your mind. This may take one to find a quiet atmosphere or place to reflect over the scripture. Tell the convert to set a particular moment to reflect over the scriptures he reads. He can do that by creating mental pictures about what the scriptures say. Demonstrate it with him or her by taking a verse or passage of scripture and reflecting it with him. Instruct him to focus on the word and even use the power of imagination to create a scene of himself in the very event you have been reading about. Through meditating on the word this way, he can put himself within the context of the scripture such that, it becomes part of him. In this way it becomes almost automatic to do what the scripture teaches.

Meditation on the scriptures is a discipline that every successful child of God must employ. Everyone meditates in one way or the other. People normally meditate on the wrong things of life. That is the reason there is so much negative happenings in most people’s life. They meditate on wrong things done to them. Worry is an example of wrong meditation. Start meditating on the right things, that is the word of God. The kind of meditation that 1 Tim 4:15, talks about, is a silent type of meditation. We would consider the other type of meditation in our next study.

PRAYER

Dear father, by your grace I receive the ability to meditate on the scriptures Daily. I also receive the ability to do what I meditate on in Jesus name.

TEACHING THE CONVERT 4

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

The stability and strength of every child of God depends on his knowledge of God through his knowledge of God’s word and his commitment to Him. We are still considering some of the further ways a new believer can take in the word of God. In practical life people who eat much tend to grow very fat barring any diseases or genetically tendencies to be lean or small in size. This time the new convert must be introduced to listening to the word of God frequently. You always become what you give attention to.

In our current dispensation information are on the loose. The means of hearing, reading or watching is also very easy to obtain. Most people have mobile phones which can record messages from their churches. They can download messages from the Internet. There are a lot of audio versions of the bible. Ignorance about the word of God should have been very difficult in these times, yet many new Christians are not introduced to the idea of listening to God’s word. They find themselves listening and watching all kinds of things on social media that rather kills their faith. As a spiritual parent help the new convert to have certain messages that he listens to regularly. You can help him to download good messages that he would be listening to. Ask him to give you a feedback of what he’s learnt. If your church has podcast of the messages preached let him download it and be listening to it. listening to messages is one of the most effective ways to receive the word and to grow your faith.

Romans 10:17 tells is that Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. When something is repeated over a long time one gets grounded in it. Satan is a master of stealing messages from the heart of most people. No thief can steal that which is well established in the heart. Encourage that convert to listen to good messages over a number of times. Show him the importance of listening to one thing repeatedly over a long time. James 1:25 reminds us to continue looking into the perfect law of liberty, so that you would not forget. Give me a convert who listens frequently to the word of God and I will show you a disciple in the shortest time, so long as those character diseases are put away.

PRAYER

Father help me to be to be an ardent listener of your word.

TEACHING THE CONVERT 3

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 ISV “Therefore, as you go, disciple people in all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,”

The scriptures enjoin the new Christian to desire the sincere milk of the word, so that He may grow by it. We listed a number of ways that the new Christian may take in the word. They are as follows;

  • Daily quiet time
  • Scripture memorisation
  • Meditation
  • Bible reading.
  • Bible study

We live at a time of our world when there is so much information going on. Most of it gives the devil an advantage over men. God’s word will surely set you on a different tangent from the world. Someone once remarked that God’s word is more current than tomorrow’s news paper. I sincerely agree with Him. Let the new Christian understand he will never lack Godly wisdom to stay away from error, if he is to daily fill his heart with the word.

We looked at having daily quiet time in our previous study. Today we start with having a daily Bible reading. You must encourage the new believer to cultivate the habit of reading the Bible daily. There are one-year Bible reading plan, or two years reading plan. This system of reading the Bible takes you through the Bible by the end of a year or by the end of two years. Let him bear in mind that the written word proceeds from the Spirit of God. As the scriptures enter him, the Spirit also enters him. Ezekiel 2:2 “Even while he was speaking to me, the Spirit entered me, set me on my feet, and I listened to the voice that had been speaking to me. “No information in this life can be compared to the word of God filling your heart.

One needs to be very disciplined to maintain a consistent life of feeding his heart with the word. The man who makes it a habit of daily reading some portion of scripture will be enlightened by various stories of the scriptures. He will soon be able to say, ‘it is written’ to stop the devil. Indeed, the benefits of knowing God’s word are far reaching.

PRAYER

Father, I receive the ability to be disciplined to consistently read the bible daily. Thank you Lord.

TEACHING THE CONVERT 2

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 BBE “Go then, and make disciples of all the nations, giving them baptism in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:”

Dear child of God your maturity as a Christian demand that you disciple others. Unfortunately, many Christians have a Christian life of home church and work. There is nothing like extending their frontiers to others, by visiting them in their homes as well. Acts 20:20 says “And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house”. Apostle Paul says he taught them publicly and from house to house. Everyone of us must be committed to the house-to-house ministry as well.

We learnt from our last study that for new babies to grow well and strong they must be free from all diseases.1 Pet 2:1 lists some character diseases as Malice, guile, envy, hypocrises and evil speaking. Teach the new believer that, as a child of God he is a new creature, the old is passed away, everything has become new (2 Corinth 5:17). Teach him to know that he is free from every life of sin and therefore must not permit any of these traits to remain in his life (Rom 6:6,14).

Many new Christians, normally experience a difficult time in growth because these negative tendencies are not well dealt with.

One of the most powerful instruments in our members to control one’s actions is our tongue. When an individual knows how to use his tongue very well, the bible says he will successfully control his whole body. James 3:2.

The tongue is a very small member yet it can direct the affairs of the whole body. Teach him or her to keep telling or saying to himself that he is a new creature in Christ and the old life of malice, deception, envy and the rest are no more in his life. He also says, he is the righteousness of God (2 Corinth 5:21), filled with love, truthfulness, appreciation of what God does through and for others. He says further that ‘I do not speak evil about myself or others in anyway (1 Peter 3:10)’. Any new believer who starts speaking this way, sets himself up to lead a very successful life in Christ. There may be some new Christians with certain unique problems yet, by prayer, love and the word of God they will soon respond positively to God’s word.

From this point, teach the new Christian the various ways of taking in the word of God. Introduce him or her to having his or her quiet time every day. Explain to her or him that the quiet time is a devotional moment of praise, prayer reading through a passage of the scripture and meditating on what was read. He must daily ask himself what have I learnt from this passage? What actions do I have to take concerning what I have learnt? Teach him to write down some of the things he learns. He then should pray about what he has learnt. An average quiet time should take about 30 to 45 minutes. These days there are a number devotionals posted on the social media network. He may stick to one or at most two very good teaching devotionals, for his or her quiet time. He may just read others to inform himself or increase his knowledge in the things of God. You the teacher may, help the convert choose a good devotional material to be used.

 PRAYER

Father, I receive the ability to care for every new convert I win for you. I commit myself by your grace to be a good establisher of souls.

TEACHING THE CONVERT

KEY SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:19 KJV” Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

Our goal for teaching the convert is to make him or her, a disciple. Let’s consider the working definition of a disciple. One becomes a disciple of Jesus Christ, when he becomes stabilised the faith, has an ongoing commitment to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and has developed the basic disciplines of Christian living and service, so that the lifelong maturing process as a Christian is guaranteed, as much as is humanly possible. The convert must first be stabilised in his faith.

Assure the new Christian that the bible is the inspired word of God and it is profitable for doctrine, correction and instruction in righteous (2 Timothy 3:16&17). The bible was not written by Europeans to deceive Africans. It was written in the middle east with overwhelming archaeological evidences. The Bible is God’s authoritative guide for all matters of faith and conduct. Assure him or her that according to the word of God anyone who accepts Jesus as his Lord has eternal life. (1st John 5:11-13) Encourage him to trust what the word says, and not his feelings. He is a child of God because the Bible said, as many that receive or believe in Jesus were given the ability to become sons of God. John 1:12,13

During the growth of children two main things should occur that would make growth possible.

1.To prevent any kind of disease from attacking the child

2 Feeding the baby well.

These two factors are captured in the following verses.

1 Peter 2:1,2 KJV “Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

One grows by Feeding on the word of God. The scripture says the one who must grow by the word should first do away with certain traits. These are as follows

1. Malice (fighting, quarrelling, anger, unforgiveness, etc)

2. Guile (lies, deception etc)

3.Envy (Jealousy, evil cravings, negative passions)

4. Hypocrisies(pretence)

5. Evil speaking

These traits can be described as character diseases that will prevent the word from bearing fruit in the growing child of God. Make the new believer aware of these things and ask the Spirit to help him put them out of his life.

The second action, is to start taking in the word. The bible says desire the sincere milk of the word so that He or she may grow by it. There are a number of ways that you can teach the new convert to receive the word of God. These are

1. Quiet time

2. Bible reading

3. Listening to the word

4. Memorising the scriptures

5. Meditating on the scriptures

6. Bible Studies.

Teach the new believer to employ all these means of taking in the word. If he is to give attention to the word as stated above, he would surely stabilise his faith in the Lord.

THOUGHT: A TIME WITH THE WORD OF GOD IS A TIME SPENT IN FELLOWSHIPPING WITH GOD.
